Welcome to The TV Shelter.

We are sorry to say that as of the 8th April 2014, The TV Shelter will no longer be open to new posts, threads or members. Like that famous Monty Python sketch, this forum has joined the choir invisible.

However this will continue to remain as an archive so that visitors can mindlessly plunder through old threads to look at PIFs, TV listings and other miscellanea that made this place truly unique.

And if you still can't get your fix of TV nostalgia visit Facebook's TV Heaven or even TV Ark, the website that spawned the original forums.

And finally a long standing has made a successor to the TV Shelter, which to a few is reminiscent of when an ITV franchise would change to another. The forum is called The TV Lounge and should keep the spirit running that it's predecessors carried.

We hope you enjoy your visit.

What toys were popular when you was a kid?

After seeing the Toys R us advert on TV recently, I went into a bit of toy nostalgia thinking about the toys which were popular when I was a kid and what toys I had and loved.

I was also wondering what toys were popular when you was a child, this will be very interesting because of having members of all ages here, so will hear about different things maybe

Well off the top of my head the toys which were popular were stuff like....

Hot wheels, Barbie, Furbies, Micro Machines, polly pockets, K-nex, Action men, Tellytubbies, Tots TV ragdolls. Stuff like that really. I had loads of action men at one point and a Tiny Tots TV ragdoll which I took virtually everywhere with me :D and I did have some hotwheels stuff but it was crap.

Infact I once really wanted a hot wheels car wash, when I eventually got it, it was crap, the car went up this tower sort of thing, divided into 3 sections, the first one, it filled with bubbles (you had to fill two small tanks with water and washing up liquid first). The second one it squirted some tiny jets of water (like a cheap water pistol) and the last one it spun the car around to dry it off

Same thing when I really wanted a Mr. Frosty, it takes about half an hour just to get a bit of crushed up ice, inside was a cheesegrater type thing that spun round and grated up the ice, but it took forever! it would be all melted by the time you had enough to make a slush puppy.

Anyway i'll be very interested to hear what everyone else remembers! :)

Sky Dancers - look them up, they were recalled with very good reason. They were lethal. My Grandma bought me one and I was terrified of it
Bratz - awful, look like prostitutes
Tamagotchi
Cupcake dolls - http://www.ghostofthedoll.co.uk/Toys_CupcakeDolls.htm According to this they were re-issued in 1998 (when I was 5-6) so that must have been when I got mine, but they were quite popular at the time
My Little Pony
I had loads and loads of Lego and Meccano sets, I believe one of them was a Wild West ranch. I loved it
Fuzzy Felt
Furbies - HORRIBLE

Can't remember anything Japanese but Doraemon and Hello Kitty were still popular when I was a kid (I think they'll always be.) Also robot pets and stuff and plenty of housewife-y stuff for girls - kitchen sets, mini sewing machines etc. I was too much of a tomboy for any of that

Let's have you! The toys I remember being popular in my childhood:

• Simon: never got though wish I had one;
• Sylvanian Families: now making a comeback;
• Rainbow Brite (my sister had Lurky, the red one from the aforementioned license);
• Oh Penny (my sister had the riding stables set: Toy and Hobby, Oldham store);
• Cabbage Patch Dolls (I thought they were 'foul as sin');
• A La Carte Kitchen (who remembers the advert where the girl 'cooked' a Swiss Roll with baked beans for her Dad?);
• Pass the Pigs: seminal board game involving pigs by Milton Bradley, 1988;
• Tomy's Lite Brite (saw one of these at a Kendal Milne toy fair in 1987; never got one);
• Screwball Scramble (also by Tomy, ditto the above);
• Fisher Price's 'Bring Along a Song' tape recorder (built like a Tonka truck in South Yorkshire PTE style coffee and cream. Included microphone).

I feel like I'm 6 again and looking forward to the last day of term's 'Toy Day'. Did anybody else have Toy Days on the last day of term at primary school?

It was mainly the Hot wheels/Matchbox type of stuff for me, as well as lego.
Annoying you with TV Mocks since November 2008, this is ETP1 Forever.

One of my favourite toys from childhood was called Magic Robot, bought for me when I was about 8 by Rose, a lovely friend of my Mum's.

You have these pages that fit into the box - you turn the robot's pointer at a question then take him out of his base, stand him on a little mirror and magically he turns to the answer - I still have it more than 30 years later - and in case you are wondering.................. yes I do still have the odd play with it :P :thumbsup:

Star Wars were very popular in the 80s, certainly were my fav toy as a kid. Other toys in the action figure category which were popular included
The A Team, Masters Of The Universe and Transformers. Also there was Zoids which also had their own comic strip in marvel comics in Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars run, then it merged with Spiderman as Spiderman and Zoids.
