| Welcome to The TV Shelter. We are sorry to say that as of the 8th April 2014, The TV Shelter will no longer be open to new posts, threads or members. Like that famous Monty Python sketch, this forum has joined the choir invisible. However this will continue to remain as an archive so that visitors can mindlessly plunder through old threads to look at PIFs, TV listings and other miscellanea that made this place truly unique. And if you still can't get your fix of TV nostalgia visit Facebook's TV Heaven or even TV Ark, the website that spawned the original forums. And finally a long standing has made a successor to the TV Shelter, which to a few is reminiscent of when an ITV franchise would change to another. The forum is called The TV Lounge and should keep the spirit running that it's predecessors carried. We hope you enjoy your visit. |

As a Queen fan, I own the concert in full - unlike the DVD. Great to have. antster1983, I believe I also have that recording of 'Blazing Saddles', but on betamax - like most of my recordings. Edited by nedoflanders, Jan 19 2009, 12:25 AM.

Couldn't help but ressurect this old thread. I probably have older recordings lying around somewhere but one of the oldest recordings I can remember looking at that I actually own (not seen it for years now) has some BBC2 continuity at the start with the old TWO look going into a programme called "The Guests Of God". I think it might have been around 1990, although it may have been earlier. On the same tape, after a recording of Watch from 1996, it cut to some adverts (can't remember what for though) and the 1989 YTV generic ident afterwards going into Coronation Street. Can't remember what was on the rest of the tape though. Although my Grandma has much older tapes than mine, some dating back to the last 1 or 2 years of ATV. On one of them, there was about nearly 20 seconds of in vision continuity with Mike Prince talking about the saturday programming for the next day, but then it cut to an episode of You Bet from the 90's (early 80's to the 90's is a rather perculiar transition for a video tape!). Another one was an ATV junction into ITN News at 5:45, with the first 8 or so minutes of the programme before it cut to some BBC2 Open University footage from, what I think may have been 1987/1988. I think the oldest recording I have so far (because I love getting hold of old tapes people are chucking out) is a tape I have which dates back I believe to 1983, because it features a special episode of 'The Tube' which shows Michael Jackson's thriller and towards the end of the tape an episode of Rainbow from 1979, but I believe it to be a repeat cause the rest of the tape is stuff from 1983. |

Always interesting to keep these old tapes particularly with announcers like Mike Prince in vision and other bits and bobs. Thanks for letting me know, xwing. |

I have recently been recieving many Betamax tapes off eBay, along with some from my grandfather's private collection ![]() Earliest recording? A Beta recording of one of the BBC television Shakespeare's - A Midsummer Night's Dream from 1979, complete with BBC1 closedown aftrwards (will attempt to upload soon, but my Windows 7 seems to have issues uploading to youtube, plus my upload speed is limited to 128kbps, being in student halls.) And believe me, playing vintage recordings on VCRs and TVs of the same era brings a good feeling

Betamax tapes seem to be easy to find on ebay but never VHS tapes :S and if they are, they're either an unreasonable price or pick up only. |

I'm surprised that there can be so many old continuity clips on a format that became so popular. presumably as it had won, the tapes would keep on being reused rather than a format like Betamax. Presumably because VHS won the war between VHS, Betamax and Video2000. Video2000 was little known (thank god!) Betamax is widely seen as a slice of history, hence why they seem to be much more common on eBay. Whenever two companies produce rival products and try to research tactics to make sure that their product wins against the opposition, the Betamax vs. VHS format war is regularly wheeled out. It basically boils down to this: just because it's better doesn't mean it will win. Technologically, Betamax was better, but as a consumer product, VHS was the best of the two. Also, marketing had a major impact on who won, and this boils down to this: JVC were willing to let other manufacturers manufacture machines of their format for free, whereas Sony wanted to charge those who favoured Beta. Thus, many more manufacturers made VHS machines - meaning that there were more VHS machines than Betamax. And then JVC went on the offensive, marketing their machines as much as they could. VHS's UK success was helped primarily to there still being big TV and VCR rental chains in the UK at the time (late 70s/early 80s) and the fact that some UK manufacturers, still quite popular with consumers decided to re-badge VCRs from the Japanese manufacturers. Particularly popular were the Ferguson Videostar range of machines - re-badged JVC decks. Anyway, gone way off topic. One interesting thing I found (on VHS - in NICAM digital stereo ) was a BBC 9 o'clock news report in early 1997 (which I had to leave behind in Sheffield - not enough room in my mum's car) detailing the then Tory government launching their election campaign. That was a really effective election campaign. They might as well have not even bothered launching one, as they didn't have an ice cream's chance in hell of winning!

The oldest stuff I have on tape is continuity from 15th June 1982, around the BBC Nine O'Clock News and ITN News at Ten on the day the Falklands War ended. The oldest off-air stuff my parents have is clips from "Top of the Pops" from 8th June 1983. |

To update, a few months ago I found an old video of BBC2 and Central stuff from, after researching for dates, 23rd February 1991. Has a programme about steam engines, followed by a bit of BBC2 continuity with the Copper cut out ident into Horizon. After Horizon, the tape cut to an episode (or film) of Columbo (at least I think it was) recorded on Central. After Columbo, various adverts appear, followed by a promo for sport programmes. After that, one of the Central idents goes into the ITN Weekend News, featuring the titles introduced in the late 80's. ITV Weather and Central East Midlands weather followed after that (must not put that on YouTube!), with more adverts, and then one of the Central idents going into Aspel and Company. Probably the oldest tape I have found so far, but not the oldest tape I have overall. |

This was a very interesting find, as it was recorded on day 38 of the Gulf War. |
