| Welcome to The TV Shelter. We are sorry to say that as of the 8th April 2014, The TV Shelter will no longer be open to new posts, threads or members. Like that famous Monty Python sketch, this forum has joined the choir invisible. However this will continue to remain as an archive so that visitors can mindlessly plunder through old threads to look at PIFs, TV listings and other miscellanea that made this place truly unique. And if you still can't get your fix of TV nostalgia visit Facebook's TV Heaven or even TV Ark, the website that spawned the original forums. And finally a long standing has made a successor to the TV Shelter, which to a few is reminiscent of when an ITV franchise would change to another. The forum is called The TV Lounge and should keep the spirit running that it's predecessors carried. We hope you enjoy your visit. |

Ok . Not exactly an original topic, but one that came well....off the top of my head . I was wondering - how old is your oldest VCR recording? 2 Years? 5? 10? Maybe even more than that?I'll start the ball rolling -- my oldest original (that is, something I recorded at the time rather than something that has been reshown recently or gotten from soneone else) is my recording of "Top of the pops - Review of the 80s". Since we've just hit 2009, this recording (at the end of this year) will be 20 years old - ! I can't even remember what I was doing at the time of this going out, but 1989 was my "last" school year (actually 1 more school year carried out at college, as my school couldn't handle it (too small!)). These days if I want to view this programme I have it copied over to DVD. The quality is not very high (because of the ancient nature of the tape!) but it means I don't have to run the original copy! Well all the ones I recorded off the television I slung when I moved house in 2001 as I hadn't got room for them but some of those were approaching 15 years old at the time. The oldest bought VCR I have in my collection dates from 1994. It's a Warner Home Video of Twice Round The Daffodils/Nurse on Wheels which I remember buying on holiday the year it was released so it's 15 years old now and still plays perfectly. |

We own a cassette that was taped in 1987, classic Yorkshire TV stuff, the last Benny Hill I think? Or was that '88? Anyway It stills plays like yesterday, as meaning my family have probably only played it once. |

The earliest recording I have is from December 1999. It was a news story about Christmas Shopping and I was in it at the end. |

God, here we go. 1979! In very weak quality and recorded in the STV region, it is a recording of 'Dirty Harry'. But going further back, on betamax I own a recording from early 1978 - which is filled with a fortnight's footage of mid-day television from Thames Television. I watched it recently and the quality...was "half there". I'll get round to uploading "the remains" of the tape on YouTube this year. I'm not too sure if I recorded it or not? I used to have recordings of the uncut versions of 'The Secret Policeman's Ball' from 1980, but over the years I lost that tape. Quite a number of my late 70's/early 80's recordings are missing - and the reason (unknown). P.S - 2inbambed, the final 'Benny Hill Show' was in 1989, when he was fired by Thames for being "too sexist", even though his annual shows were picking up as much as 14 million still. He made a show for American television in 1991 titled 'Benny Hill In New York' and that was it. Hill was even going to start making shows for Central - and to my disbelief the contract arrived on the day of his death! Edited by nedoflanders, Jan 2 2009, 03:28 PM.

Ah, this must have been before the generic '89 brand was brought in then, as it's non-existent on this tape. |

The earliest VCR recording that I still have is "Carry On Cabby/Carry On Spying", which I taped over consecutive weeks during a short 'Carry On' season on BBC Two in 1987. |

That was my earliest recording too! My family were latecomers to the wonders of video recording... I had it for years but, thanks to various house moves over the years, it's gone missing...The earliest recording I still have is the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert from 1992. |

We didn't get a video recorder until around 1988, but the earliest recording I have in my possession is a Betamax tape with a horror film called "The Black Sleep" taped from BBC2 in 1981, followed by a closedown. Then there's a trace of the previous recording off BBC1, the end of Parkinson with Terry Wogan and Jimmy Young, followed by the weather and another closedown, voiced by Peter Brook if I remember correctly. Quality: not bad. |
