| Welcome to The TV Shelter. We are sorry to say that as of the 8th April 2014, The TV Shelter will no longer be open to new posts, threads or members. Like that famous Monty Python sketch, this forum has joined the choir invisible. However this will continue to remain as an archive so that visitors can mindlessly plunder through old threads to look at PIFs, TV listings and other miscellanea that made this place truly unique. And if you still can't get your fix of TV nostalgia visit Facebook's TV Heaven or even TV Ark, the website that spawned the original forums. And finally a long standing has made a successor to the TV Shelter, which to a few is reminiscent of when an ITV franchise would change to another. The forum is called The TV Lounge and should keep the spirit running that it's predecessors carried. We hope you enjoy your visit. |

Hello loungers I'll have to say this but after spending 3 hours watching C4 non stop, friday night TV on Channel 4 has to be one of the best. It's one of those moments where I'm actually watching television. I'm not talking about the Friday Night Project or Big Brother, here was last night's schedule. 9pm: Phoenix Nights 10.05pm: The IT Crowd 10.35pm: My Name is Earl 11.05pm: Fonejacker 11.35pm: Father Ted Anyone else have any moments where there's a strand of programmes that you find irrestible? For last night's offering well done Channel 4!

In my opinion I wouldn't say it is that good. I think that Phoenix Nights, The IT Crowd and My name is Earl are all programmes people just watch because they think other people are watching them and not because they are good programmes, all of people on the IT croud cant act. Fonejacker is good but I have already seen them all on E4 and I have already seen every episode of Father Ted |

I agree with some of the things that mseven said. The cast of the IT Crowd cannot act and the programme is absolute crap, Father Ted is over-exposed and Fonejacker has been seen on E4 (and is a one-trick pony) but apart from that, I'd agree that it is a good line-up. I'd disagree that people only watch the likes of My Name Is Earl and Phoenix Nights because other people do. That's hardly treating the audience as having any sense and/or the ability to discover a show for themselves and enjoy it without fear of what the tabloid press will say. There are still plenty of people who don't read Heat or its' ilk and can still muster the ability to make a decision for themselves as to whether a particular programme is entertaining or not. |

I agree, I think it's trendy for some people to watch 'em. I think they aim these shows at the student crowd, but they're probably out on the piss on a Friday . I don't watch any of these. The promo trails just put me off 'em.
I'm not devoting any time to crappy British sitcoms. In my biased view, Friday night TV in the mid '80s was better. And in the late '70s even. I can recall looking forward to Fridays, because the kids TV would be good; I'd watch Ghosts of Motley Hall then Grange Hill for example . Then maybe some Muppet Show later on, or Sale of the Century
. The Professionals seemed to always be on at 9pm every week (Thank you LWT - I miss U
) And even seeing a boozed-up Reggie Bosanquet on News at 10 seemed interesting

As some one in the 16 - 34 age group I have seen lots of people say things like: Situation 1 Person 1: Did you watch <name of programme here>? Person 2: Yeah it was well good Person 1 contuinues to talk about it and person 2 puts in a fake laugh or two What really happened was Person 2 wanted to fit in so they pretend to like it because person 1 bought it up so they must like it, but really they both hated it. They would continue to watch it incase anyone else talks about it. Situation 2 Person 1: Did you watch <name of programme here> it was well crap? Person 2: Yeah it was crap (contuinues to talk about how bad the programme is) What really happened was Person 1 thought that Person 2 wouldn'd like the programme so they said it was crap. Person 2 wanted to fit in so they said they hate it, but really they both liked it. As Person 1 and 2 think that no one likes it they would probably not continue watching it. |

That's one of the reasons why I don't like talking about tv programmes in front of a crowd. I remember someone asking me years ago if I liked Eastenders and I said no and he started to swear like mad.

"My Name Is Earl" is bloody stupid  , if I hate anything it's American sitcoms, they've been recieved over here and ruined our screens. If you hate the television of today you have to blame the Americans for that, I don't mind their Drama series because they're set more like their movies. The only American series I like are "House"(Hugh Laurie's American accent is very fake  but his cruelty is great), "Miami Vice"(Oh who could forget this classic, the final episode was very moving ) & "The Sopranos"(I only recently took a liking to this series, when I bought the first and second series).Anyway back to the subject, well it's crap, there's nothing special about it. Like what was said earlier Father Ted is the only great one but we all have the DVD's. |
