Explanation All right, it's been so long since we're regularly RPed that I don't want to go at this in a way that will make it overwhelming for anyone who might be interested in RPing. I want people to feel free to jump in whenever they get a chance to log on, so that means I need to explain the plot of this RP in a way that is both accessible and simple enough for you to understand it and post knowing what you are contributing to. So what I need to do here is post a summary of the background for this story (which will, unfortunately, be a simplification) and then post a list of ideas for subplots. I want subplots to revolve around characters first, and that includes both external and internal conflicts. Hopefully, the background should give some context for the external conflict, and the personalities of your characters should provide material for their internal conflicts. However, this is all still brainstorming and should be regarded as such. My RPs have a long, proud history of being open to retcons and sudden changes. In previous summaries or explanations of plots for my RPs, I think I have tended to focus a bit too much on trying to connect everything together. For this topic, I want to focus on defining who characters are now, in THIS story, before trying to explain any clever connections to what we have done in the past. Those shall be considered easter eggs at this point. So, without further adieu, let's figure this out, shall we? Note: when you contribute anything to this topic, please follow the categories here (or, if you need to, add a new category). We'll keep this compiled for anyone who wants to read backgrounds or character summaries. General Background Vanda This world is called Vanda. Over its long history, it has seen countless conflicts between competing nations and religious wars. Human beings live alongside monsters, demons, and all manner of magical creatures. On Vanda, nature maintains its balance through two physical representations of its laws. Crystals The first is the crystals, ancient gems of incredible power that govern everything from the elements to the laws of time and space. Over time, many of these crystals have been fashioned into terrible weapons. Through technology, human beings have even come to understand how to harness the incredible power of these artifacts. Gods The second physical representation of Vanda's natural laws, and perhaps the most obvious in the lives of its people, take the form of gods. In the beginning, there was one god, Ouranos, who ruled nature with unquestionable power. Over time, Ouranos's power came to be divided among other gods, who took on unique powers of their own. Diverse gods came to win followers throughout the world, with some becoming heads of nations and others the figureheads of religions dedicated to their worship. Magic The power to control the natural forces of Vanda. Said to originate from the aura of the crystals. Mysterious, yet natural, it is considered one of the most important forces of nature at work in Vanda, as it influences everything on the world. Technology The artificial devices used to control the physical and magical world. An important part of many modern civilizations, and considered unnatural by many demons, and a perversion of the natural world by intelligent monsters. Human Beings (Humes) A versatile race of moderate intelligence and relatively low average physical strength, humes are noted for their artistic and scientific progress, though they frequently serve under the gods. Demons An incredibly varied race with few commonalities other than their connection to the gods, who gave birth to many of these creatures. Considered by some humes to be inferior children of the gods, demons lead a wide variety of lifestyles, with some living in cities and others in the wild. Monsters The word used to refer to large, magic-based animals with oftentimes exaggerated physical traits and remarkable physical strength. What distinguishes monsters from animals are that monsters, when they die, become crystals. Animals The word used to describe non-monster creatures that have survived competition with other magical creatures. Most animals have been out-competed by monsters, and those that survive have adapted to use magic as well. Others still, such as many fish species, are maintained by humans who use them as food sources. Lemurians A magically-based race of humanoid giants that lives in the Forbidden Lands of Eureka, and are said to be the last survivors of an advanced race that was driven mad by its own power long ago. Continually berserk and rumored to be without consciousness, these giants roam the northern lands and kill all they encounter. Nations Kingdom of Daetalus For centuries, Ouranos has stood at the head of a powerful kingdom called Daetalus, which has recently conquered surrounding kingdoms, leading other nations to see the old god's country--and its religion--as a potential threat. Even within Daetalus, the Church of Ouranos struggles to maintain its credibility because of widespread corruption. Dingard Empire Dingard, an old military empire that has grown stagnant in the wake of an industrial revolution, continues to grow. The closest nation to Daetalus, its eastern neighbor, it has become increasingly weary of that kingdom's expansion. Saronia Kingdom An old nation west of Dingard and to the far west of Daetalus that hides behind thick walls and is cut off from other nations by a formidable mountain range. Lost ancient wars against Dingard and has isolated itself in recent years, it is currently under the control of a mysterious church dedicated to Saint Carlyle. Forbidden Lands of Eureka North of Daetalus lies the Forbidden Lands of Eureka, home of the savage and powerful race of Lemurians. One of Ouranos's primary services to his country is protecting Daetalus from the Lemurians, as well as the monsters they shepard in Eureka. It is rumored that they breed monsters to use in war, and are only kept from becoming unstoppable by the tireless efforts of Daetalus's military. Ruins of Lemurian civilization exist, but are seldom explored due to the danger involved. Lunaria Vanda's moon, and secretly home to cities built by a group of survivors who fled the crumbling Lemurian civilization long ago. Magically advanced, but now almost identical to humes except for the ability to communicate with--and control--monsters. Luna's cities resembles bubbles that hold air, which is produced and recycled by monsters that the Lunarian civilization has repurposed for practical applications, such as production of food, air, and luxury items. Religions The Church of Ouranos A monotheistic religion dedicated to the teachings and worship of Ouranos, the official figurehead god of Daetalus. With a clear hierarchy separating priests into ranks (S-A-B-C-D-E-F, with SS designating head of the Church), the church officially rewards the just for their great deeds by giving them higher ranks, though it has been criticized for restricting promotions only to those in the established aristocracy of the church. The Church of the Garden A church with an eccentric set of beliefs. They believe the world is a garden, nourished and kept alive by the light of their god, the sun. Led by The Radiance(a title bestowed to the leader of the Garden), the Church is primarily composed of knights seeking to better the world. These knights, known to the general populace as Gardeners, help out local authories and generally seek to make the world a better place. Under the leadership of the current Radiance, Zenthir, the church has become increasingly xenophobic, going from relatively tolerant of all to actively attacking and wiping out demons with special agents. Organizations The School of White Magic The guild of wizards who promote knowledge and advancement of medical science and magic. Their rank system is inspired by the Church of Ouranos, using the S-A-B-C-D-E-F system, with SS designating the archmage candidates and SSS designating the official archmage, or leader, of the school. The school lends its name to hospitals, homeless shelters, and emergency clinics throughout Vanda. The School of Black Magic The guild of wizards who promote knowledge and advancement of technological and magical weaponry. Their rank system is inspired by the Church of Ouranos, using the S-A-B-C-D-E-F system, with SS designating the archmage candidates and SSS designating the official archmage, or leader, of the school. The school sponsors multiple weapons companies and magic dojos, and hosts an annual tournament of mages to determine who will advance in each rank. The Mercenary Guild The guild of mercenaries and warriors who maintain a strict code of conduct among swords-for-hire. This organization has helped bring law and order to the land by operating independently of official militaries, but keeping peace with the governments of nations. The mercenary guild is famous for stopping a period of feudal warfare between Dingard and Saronia long ago, and for preventing the wholesale use of private militias and mercenary armies. Important Terms Sol The semi-divine magic wielded by sekihans. Mildly divine, it has an adverse effect on demons. The residue of a God of Light, Solarion, Sol has irradiated Sekiha and the bloodlines of those who live their, giving the ability to use Sol over the generations. A dilluted replica of Solarion's powers, it doesn't require incantations like some traditional magic, instead being fast and fluid. The point of Solarion's death, the Sacred Crater, is filled with glowing water said to have the potential to give Sol...if it doesn't kill the drinker, first. The crater is guarded by Sekiha, to prevent ill-use of it. Sigilism A mysterious practice of channeling black magic through sigils either drawn in the air, with magical material, or with ink. A skill related to enchantments and curses, it is said to be the most capable type of magic when it comes to embedding objects with magical properties. A lost art, sigilism was once used to protect the most dangerous ancient artifacts and the structures built to house them. A highly sought-after art among treasure hunters and criminals. Dragoon Refers to a class of knights who focus on intense physical training, especially of the legs. Their signature fighting style involves high speed aerial maneuvers with honed jumping abilities and mid-level control of air-elemental magic. Called the "Flying Knights" at times, they once participated in a military rivalry with archers--and then gunners--for status as the most important individual unit in an army. Glimmergold Originally designed for ceremonial purposes. Despite it's name, the Church Knight's armor isn't actually made of gold, which would be far too expensive and fragile to use as armor. Instead, it is steel, enhanced and enchanted, becoming more durable and gaining it's faintly glimmering, golden hue. While not as strong as more modern armors, it gives a certain flair for day to day business. Memory Glass A material crafted from crystal that is capable of a near-unlimited storage of memory. Crafted into a glass eye by detective Morrison Hex, who uses the glass eye to keep track of criminal records, citizenship data, and police accounts of suspicious people. He is the most famous user of this rare material in Daetalus. His "Eye of Memory" is capable of restoring memories as well. Lancer The highest military technology available to Daetalus, the lancer is a suit of mechanized armor that stands at roughly twelve feet in height. It harbors a crystal core as its power source, giving it roughly the same strength as monsters, and is said to possess a soul, which can amplify the feelings and powers of its pilot, though the lancer's latent power is unknown. Lancers have proved to be the only technological weapon capable of standing up to Lemurians, though the odds are still firmly set against humans. Nicknamed "Living Coffins," the mortality rate of Lancer pilots in the scouting expeditions has been notoriously high for years. Deities Ouranos The ancient, secretive head of state who spends most of his time at the heart of a temple dedicated in his honor. Allows visitors on Sundays and stands as the official Supreme Court Judge of the country. Delegates the daily governing of the city to an elected president, a religious council, and a parliament, Ouranos makes an effort to seem interested in political reform, but his age and personality make him come off as a curmudgeon. Spends more and more time away from the public spotlight in order to work on various projects related to the Lemurians. Having fought a war with them for countless years, he is obsessed with finding the newest ways of vanquishing them, and then using those weapons to stave off competing gods. Has read the most books of anyone in the world, but is a slow reader. Tends to space out in conversations randomly, and claims that he spends entire days simply reminiscing of better times. Solarion [X] The "God of the Azure Light." This deity was said to have created Sekihans, who worshiped him as a deity. In time, however, Solarion became displeased at the corruption of the world, and eventually sought to cleanse it in his holy light, so that the world may be reborn pure. Some of his worshipers opposed him, and one, who became known as the Knight of Shadows, wielded the dread blade Nihil against him. After a long battle, the Knight slew Solarion, his body exploding in a massive blast of light and creating the Sacred Crater. It is suspected, but not proven, the Nihil was the gift of a rival god, but much information is lost to time. Characters Main Characters Richter "Nex" Vastor A 23 year old holy dragoon whose memories originally hail from the now-dead world of Terra, he searches for his lost family while occasionally plagued by headaches caused strange imagery. Are these images memories? Or visions? Once a prince full of doubts on Terra, he has since moved past his inner darkness and carries himself with authority, confidence and kindness. The most likely to answer a call to action. Lenaliel A 20-year old member of the Church of the Garden. Raised by them since she was a mere four years old, she was trained to become one of the knights of the Church. Young and idealistic, she aspires to the virtues of her church, doing her best to make the 'garden' a better place for all. Although Lenaliel claims to be an elf, no evidence exists on them, leading most to think she's just a Sekihan who got bonked on the head a bit to much. Although she tries to act calm and resolute, she is easily flustered and a tad naive. A avid gardener, Lenaliel(Or Lena, for short), is quite fond of nature. Salvador A 16 year-old Daetalus native and one of the last sigilists. He lived a poor lifestyle in Daetalus where he prided himself as a peerless graffiti artist. Abducted at the age of ten by the man who would become his master, he was taught in the killing arts and unleashed upon the enemies of the criminal syndicates, though he would later reject this lifestyle and seek his own way in life. A guilt-ridden, nervous man, he seeks to emulate the people he has come to respect. Keeps his hair unkempt and tends to wear a windbreaker, he tries not to stick out from the crowd. Still secretly creates graffiti, and his alter ego Tobias is famous in the slums. The worst liar among his friends. Kaze A 21 year old man of letters who believes in authority and straightforwardness. Seeks power to avoid repeats of personal tragedies. As a boy, Kaze emulated soldiers to the point of mimicking the way they walked and talked. Later, he would join a local militia and serve faithfully until his troop settled in an idyllic village, where he found his first love. The week before the marriage, his fiance was murdered by a black mage specializing in fire spells. Horrified by his inability to match the mage's power, Kaze joined the mercenary guild in order to hone his skills and gain the ability to one day carry out his revenge. Kaze has blunt political views, seeing clear class differences between "big" and "little" people, and clearly wants to be one of the "big" people, hence his emulation and respect for authority figures. A lifelong fan of fairy tales, he prefers his optimistic way of looking at people, and still tends to ignore injustices when they clash with his worldview. Has the worst sense of humor of the group. Side Characters Cleese Fairchild A 33 year-old priest of the Church of Ouranos. Tirelessly vigilant, but somewhat liberal in his lifestyle choices, Cleese works to reform the church. He believes that corruption in the church and the government is preventing those organizations from serving the ordinary citizens of Daetalus. Believes in the virtues of his god, and is quick to remind citizens that Daetalus has only survived monster and Lemurian attacks thanks to Ouranos and his personal contributions to their safety. Despite his world-weariness, has hope for a peaceful future, and believes in the church's ability to create that future. The first to get sick in flu season, despite his training in White Magic, he often comes off as a dreary, illness-ridden man of the cloth. Milly Renton The 18 year-old archmage candidate for the School of White Magic, an organization dedicated to advancing medicine, magical or otherwise. The child of a large, rural family, Milly relies on her roots on the farm to keep herself grounded as she advances in school and in reputation. A frequent volunteer at homeless shelters and emergency medical clinics, Milly has seen the suffering of her home country of Daetalus, and hopes to offer some comfort to the people she helps. Believes in family above all else. The first to laugh at a bad joke, Milly's cheeriness and optimism set her apart from other health care workers in Daetalus. Morrison Hex A 50 year-old hard-boiled police detective in Daetalus who has set out to fight the corruption in the church and in the government while also carrying out his duty of purging the city of its organized crime problem. Not afraid to manipulate people, he often pits priests, government figures, and criminals against each other in order to weaken them and expose corrupt officials. Having worked as a beat cop for many years, he has seen his share of fights and tirelessly pursues his targets, to the detriment of his social and family life. His marriage is falling apart and his son hates him with a passion. Frequently accused of being a dirty cop by citizens, he is nevertheless respected by his fellow officers. The most frequent barhopper among the group, and a connoisseur of fine wine from around the world, he can be surprisingly sophisticated if provided with the right company. Gyunta Born, abandoned, far from home, 12 year-old Gyunta was living on the street until he was saved from this lifestyle by Cleese, who took him in as a ward He doesn't even remember his parents, and he prefers to be alone and away from noise. The easiest to scare, and a proud street rat. Minor Characters Lorn Kassak A down-on-his-luck 30 year old veteran of the scouting expeditions led by Frey. A man who served under Frey's predecessor, Lorn knows many of the details of the scouting expedition's journeys before their few victories under the new commander. Loyal to his city, Lorn hopes to rejoin the expedition despite facial damage that resulted in him losing his teeth and a leg injury that weakened his knee enough to prevent him from executing the high speed combat tactics of the current expeditionary force. As a boy, he was raised in a middle class family who owned a printing press, though he ran away from home at 16 in order to join the military. Now, at 30, he has found himself unable to find employment due to the reluctance of local businesses to openly support the scouting legion, which happens because of laws forbidding them to employ ex-soldiers from the expedition. In this sense, he is a victim of the politics of the scouting legion, which many politicians fear due to its acceptance of foreign fighters. Despite the politics, Lorn believes that Daetalus will eventually stop persecuting the expedition, and gladly reminds local knights of his hopes even as he begs for their help. Not Yet Introduced Nieve Miserie A 23 year-old revolutionary who grew up in the Forbidden Lands of Eureka. A master summoner and animal-lover, she lives a wild life away from the hustle and bustle of the cities, but stays informed concerning current events. Has a deep hatred for the gods, but keeps the reason for this a secret. Publicly, she rallies for greater freedom and equality, and decries the corruption of the church and state. Considered a radical, she is frequently targeted by the police, though various military figures hold respect for her due to her contributions to their fight against the more dangerous monsters in Eureka. A humanist at heart, she is a troubled figure who struggles to find happiness as an outsider. Proud of her ability to find inner beauty in anyone, she secretly finds time to indulge in her hobby of painting portraits of people she meets. Secrets Is actually centuries old, as her lineage goes back to an offshoot of the ancient Lemurian society who migrated to Vanda's moon during their civilization's crisis. She keeps this a secret, fearing that ordinary people would treat her like a god if they knew. Frey Frater The 30 year-old captain of the royal guard of Daetalus, Frey is known as Daetalus's greatest soldier. Instructed by Ouranos himself in close-combat and the equal of S-rank mages of both Black and White magic schools, he is said to be a peerless warrior whose personal contributions keep the Lemurians and Monsters from Eureka from overwhelming scouting missions into the forbidden lands. Said to come from a poor family in Daetalus's slums, Frey is seen as a folk hero by citizens despite his off-putting rigidity and negative demeanor. Has committed himself to honor, but has a view of honor that is notoriously inflexible. Religiously hardworking, is said to spend his mornings doing chores, and competes in housekeeping competitions. The most meticulous duster. Andrew Vastor A 15 year old black mage who originally hailed from the world of Terra. He suffers from occasional headaches of different imagery, but ultimately pushes forward to ignore it. Despite his capabilities, he tries to live his life without strife and as such avoids conflict. He seems to have ties to a different goddess. In spite of this, he holds a kindness and gentle demeanor one wouldn't expect from someone with such strength. The last one to fall asleep. Clint A 27 year-old thief-turned revolutionary said to be a rising star in the criminal underbelly of Daetalus. A petty and jealous man with a background as an orphan who was beaten by the priests who ran his orphanage. During a series of scandals involving priests, Clint threatened to blow the whistle on his orphanage by running away, and the head priest retaliated by having him given to a notorious scientist who experimented on Clint's body, turning him into a monster with a crystal heart. Although Clint escaped from his captor, he was an outcast, and lived on the streets for years, joining gangs who profited from his physical and magical strength. Despite his harsh life, Clint dreamed of a better world, hoping that one day he could get back at the church and its god for robbing him of his childhood. Has a quick temper due to being guarded at all times, but can slip into moments of kindness. Has metallic hair and eyes that glow at night. Bites his nails, which grow much faster than those of normal humans and resemble claws, and sometimes secretly uses them to try his hand at creating sculptures. Khalan Known as the Demon Priest, this kind demon somehow obtained the ability to use sacred sorcery thought impossible for one of his kind. Khalan preached unity between all peoples, regardless of race or social class. Wandering the land and healing the sick, he nevertheless made enemies. In particular, the Church of the Garden labeled Khalan a heretic who mocked them with his use of their spells. Having disappeared from the public eye, nobody knows if he simply grew tired of their accusations, or if some zealot struck him down. Marcus Livid A 25 year old captain in the mercenary guild and Kaze's direct superior. Marcus and Kaze have been serving together ever since Kaze joined his local militia. After witnessing the destruction of Kaze's village and the murder of Kaze's wife, Marcus vowed together with Kaze to take revenge on the fire mage who committed those crimes. Advancing in rank much faster than Kaze, Marcus became engrained in the secretive affairs of the Mercenary Guild, with Kaze serving as his right-hand man throughout. A man with dreams of becoming guild leader, Marcus works relentlessly towards his ambition. He came from a ruling class background but was denied it when his father's estate was seized during a border conflict between Dingard and Daetalus. Hates war for his own reasons. He is the source of Kaze's ideas about "big" and "little" people. A charismatic speaker who believes that war is ruining the dignity of the ruling class. Marcus's passions easily get the best of him at times, making Kaze the more reasonable of the two. He, like Kaze, prefers to see the positive side of his belief system and downplays the negative aspects of his classist beliefs. Assertive and outspoken, he has an excellent ability to understand organizational problems and create solutions. Intelligent, well-informed, and an excellent public speaker. Values knowledge and competence, and has little patience with those who disappoint him. The first one to blush at a dirty joke. Plot Lines Cleese and Nex: Mission Against Corruption Cleese and Nex's working relationship involves the former giving missions to the latter in order to fight the corruption in Daetalus's church and government. Cleese and Nex's bonds of trust and friendship are formidable, but the long reach of these organizations makes these missions incredibly varied and sometimes extremely dangerous. Furthermore, their common enemy lurks behind a criminal organization known as the Syndicate, or the Daetalus Syndicate to people outside the city. Can Cleese and Nex take down this organization? What is this organization's true nature, and how will that shed light on the corruption in Daetalus? Milly and Ena: School Rivalry Ena and Milly are rival candidates for archmage of White Magic. How will their rivalry materialize? Nex and the Vastors: A Lost Family Nex has memories of his lost family, but little trace of them. Will he ever find his family? Salvador and the Master Sigilist: Destined Fight Salvador has betrayed the mysterious master sigilist who trained him. What is the nature of this master of magic, and at what lengths will he go to in order to track down and punish his pupil? Cleese and Gyunta: The Streetrat's Redemption Cleese has agreed to take Gyunta under his wing and teach him magic. Can Gyunta make a clean break from his life on the streets and turn his life around? Kaze: The Mysterious Bodyguard [END] After returning Mizu and Ena to Sekiha, Kaze departed from their service. Will anyone ever learn more about this mysterious warrior? For now, it seems that the book is closed on this particular story; that is, until it is reopened. Kaze: The Promethean Fire Kaze seeks revenge against the fire mage who destroyed his village and murdered his fiance. With little information about him other than vague reports from the Mercenary Guild, Kaze continues to hunt down this mysterious mage. Morrison Hex: The Conspiracy One of the reasons why Morrison is so interested in visions like Nex's is that he cannot restore them, despite the power of memory restoration possessed by his Eye of Memory. As a result, he does not consider these visions memories at all, even though people like Nex insist that they are memories from another world. And even though there may not be any obvious threat from the memories now, he worries about their implications. Is this a case of mass brainwashing, as he suspects? For now, he considers this to be one of the most worrying conspiracies in Daetalus. Is there a deadly secret behind the unexplainable aspects of these visions? Some fighting game-y style super moves I thought up for various characters. They tend to use the fighting game rules of 'can take a ton of punishment', though, so take them with a grain of salt. Zenthir, The Radiance Technique: Glory of the Sun Forming a spear of holy energy out of his staff, Zenthir mocks his opponent before dashing in at incredible speeds, hitting them with a barrage of attacks from various angles. Appearing in front of his battered opponent, he skewers them with his spear before lifting them into the air and blasting them away with holy energy. Hyathor, The Wandering Storm Super Move: Storm Front Holding his blade of lightning low to the ground, Hyathor rushes forward at high speeds, slashing them before turning around and dashing once more, knocking them into the air with the second hit. With a snap of his fingers, a bolt of lightning crashes down on the airborne opponent, smashing them into the ground. Aria, The Dawn Archer Super Move: Arrow of Dawn Dashing forward, Aria seems to phase through the opponent before vanishing. Her opponent looks around, confused, before Aria appears with a twirl of her cloak, firing a powerful arrow of light at her opponent from midair before they can prepare themselves. Violetta and Taena Finding a singular theme for two characters is tricky(even moreso when they fight solely as a duo). :P Super Move: Combination Assault Violetta throws a fireball at her opponent, knocking them off balance as Taena rushes in with a powerful slash, before smashing her foe into the air. Violetta follows this with a barrage of fireballs, juggling the opponent as Taena slams them back to the ground with a powerful blow, knocking them into the air once more. Taena finishes off the attack by smashing the opponent away with a baseball swing. Lenaliel Special Move: Sunrise Slash Charging forward, Lenaliel knocks her enemy into the air with a powerful shield slam. Energy Source Sol The semi-divine magic wielded by sekihans. Deities Solarion The "God of the Azure Light." This deity was said to have created Sekihans, who worshiped him as a deity. |
