After almost twenty minutes of moving through elevators, stairs, and control sections of the city's reactor, General Douglass returned to his place in the command center. His chief of staff and technical operators were hard at work keeping the shield up, which itself was a chore, and Douglass himself was about to begin coordinating public work crews again to try and fix the damage done in Clint's latest attack. Suddenly, as soon as he sat down, his monitor lighted up, and the soldier at the gate spoke up. The soldier's face appeared on the screen. "Sir," the guard began, "Shinryu's here to see you." Douglass raised an eyebrow. "But our next meeting isn't scheduled until tomorrow morning. Are you sure?" Suddenly, Shinryu pushed the soldier to the side and appeared on the screen himself. "General, I must see you now. It's urgent!" Douglass nodded, and then spoke out to both Shinryu and his staff operating the gate. "All right, come on through." With that, the force field around the Command Center dropped, and Shinryu made his way up into Douglass's control deck along with a young woman with striking red hair. Shinryu almost ran into the room panting and sweating--unusual for someone as reserved as him--and he spoke out in an equally rushed, frantic tone. "Sir, this woman's name is Lexis. She claims to be a member of an organization called the Order of OMNI." Douglass turned to the young woman, taking a strong, firm stance. "I've never heard of this organization." Shinryu nodded. "That's not surprising, sir. She claims that it's based in the Eastern Continent in a country called Altea." "Do you believe her?" Douglass asked. At this, Shinryu nodded. "Yes. And what's more, I believe she has information about our enemies." Douglass raised an eyebrow. "Which ones? Right now, we seem to have plenty of them." Shinryu took a deep breath. "The ones most present." Lexis took a step towards Douglass. "Excuse me, sir, but maybe I should explain this to you myself." Douglass nodded. "Fair enough. If Shinryu, my chief of intelligence, thinks you have vital information to our cause, then I can't afford not to listen. Please, tell us what you know." Lexis nodded. "All right. As he said, my name is Lexis. I'm part of a religious organization called the Order of OMNI...or rather, I was. About two years ago, I left the Eastern Continent and came here for refuge. You see, the Order had been...changed over the years because of political instability in Altea. The order worshipped the same gods and goddesses you now fight, and we...we were awaiting their return, hoping to join in their conquest. You see, we of the Order possess similar abilities to the gods. Long ago, we even numbered among them as equals. However, we were left behind in order to maintain some stability in the world. Because of the great cataclysm, however, we could not, and eventually those of us who remained settled in the Eastern Continent, helping to nurture the human civilization there. But over time, many among us became corrupt. Others...insane. Right now, I'm sure the others in the Order are aiding the gods in their conquest of Altea and Regnum, the two strongest kingdoms of the Eastern Continent." Douglass nodded. This was a lot of information to take in, but it was important to the future of the war effort. "Go on. So, what do you know about the enemies that Daetalus faces now?" Lexis took a deep breath before continuing. "I didn't want to believe it at first, but this man named Clint...his tactics and sheer brutality resemble the methods of another member of the Order, a OMNI named Luzio. Luzio too was vicious, a killer. I...had my doubts, but now I'm almost positive that Clint and Luzio are one and the same." Douglass's eyes widened. "What? Impossible! Clint is..." Lexis nodded. "He's leader of the Wild Lands, yes, the one who banded together those without homes for the cause of fighting and destroying Daetalus, and he was so brutal in this endeavor that many thought him a nihilist. But I've heard other stories, stories from those who've met him. They say Clint is cunning, too precise and too deliberate in his actions for them to be the work of a madman." Antipus suddenly stood up and walked up beside Douglass. "But is that really enough to link the two?" he asked. "After all, this sounds like purely circumstantial evidence, not hard fact." Lexis lowered her head. "But I felt him. I felt his energy. This is what finally convinced me that Clint is Luzio. And this, I believe, changes your prospects for victory." Douglass raised his voice, but not in anger. He was simply concerned about this news, about what it would mean to learn that their most persistent enemy was an agent from an outside enemy. "How so? In what way?" Lexis took a moment to collect her thoughts so she could list them more clearly. "Sir, if Luzio is here, and if he's trying this hard to destroy Daetalus, then it means the Order has already decided to oppose you. Altea and Regnum won't necessarily go along, but there are many who still follow the Order. The way I see it, your list of enemies will likely only grow even more." Douglass took a deep breath, and then folded his arms. This news was something he hadn't expected, and it was troubling. It was enough worrying about Nyx, but now Clint again? Daetalus had only just defeated the bulk of his armies. The thought that he could gain more support from elsewhere was beyond threatening. It was a crisis waiting to happen. "Lexis, is there anything else you haven't told me? I'm aware that you don't have time now to explain every detail to me, but is there anything else that you should tell me now before I call a meeting?" Lexis nodded. "Sir, Shinryu has just told me that Clint is...well...that he's stolen a serum that may given him extraordinary strength." Douglass nodded. "Yes. As of now, his motives are unclear, but we realize there must be a reason he's stolen the Rutland Serum. Do you have any idea what it is?" Lexis nodded, though this time with a frightened look. "Sir, if Clint becomes powerful enough, he'll be capable of creating his own Battle Fortress. Granted, it won't be as large or as powerful as Nyx's Leviathan-Class Battle Fortress, but it'll be formidable. Members of our order are capable of using large reserves of energy to create Behemoth-Class Battle Fortresses, which were once used as scout vessels. I'm not sure how Clint could manage such energy reserves without killing himself. Creation of these fortresses take vast amounts of energy, and Clint, or rather Luzio, lost that kind of power after the cataclysm. We all did. I believe he'll use this 'Rutland Serum' to compensate." Douglass turned away from Lexis, and the entire command center became silent. "I see..." Douglass took a step towards the command center's main monitor, and Antipus spoke up after a moment of silence. "General Douglass, if this is true..." Douglass turned his head to meet Antipus's gaze. "Yes, I know. It could mean complete annihilation for us. Antipus-" Antipus saluted. "Yes sir?" Douglass put on a steely look. "Begin evacuating the people into the sub city. I know we haven't tested the flight systems yet, but given this new information, I don't believe we have any other choice. Given the data we have now, I'm certain that our shields won't be enough on their own to save Daetalus. We'll have to become mobile and shift our strategy from defense to offense. I know it's risky, but it's a move I've been considering for some time now. This news has convinced me that now is the time for us to take the fight to Nyx and Clint at once. This city was designed to fight these Battle Fortresses, and we no longer have the time to put off our inevitable confrontation with the gods. It's time to act. As soon as the people are evacuated, let Timothy know that he can begin readying the reactor for a flight test." |
