I wanted to post this for the fun of it. This will be Cornelius's justification for what he's done to the Preying Blades.

"Don't take me for a fool: I never acted on impulse. I destroyed these people's lives because I chose to. They were miserable wretches, mental patients, and sad, lonely excuses for living beings. I took the formless muck of their lives and molded it into something meaningful. You see, I think the beauty of the human experience lies in opposition, in suffering. People don't learn by satisfying habits, they learn by having them stripped away, by having the familiar cast aside while threats close in on them from all sides. A man's life in the wild is short, nasty, brutish, and solitary: does society's addictions change this? No! Humans are naturally molded and shaped by their experiences, and a person who experiences no hardship in their life is weak, in mind and in body. If there is no suffering, there is no genuine value in the life of a human being. Honor and virtue aren't won in a throw of rigged dice: they're won by sticking it out, even when the cards are stacked against you. You may criticize me for my methods, but in the end the people you say I've ruined are strong, stronger than they ever could have been without my discipline. So what if they're not full of ideals? So what if they reject your pathetic concepts of love and happiness? These things are only coping mechanisms anyway, cheap devices humans use to justify their existence because their lives are too short and pointless to be meaningful in and of themselves. You may judge me, but in the end I've saved these people, saved them from the meaningless trappings of culture and society. They are complete. They are perfect. They are suffering, symbols in themselves of the rigors and pain of the human condition. They are my children, the only creatures I could possibly love in this world, because love is just attachment, and they are my legacy."

Oh my...Cornelius is quite dark.

Andrew's already going to be shocked at Elise's change. This however, is the thing that truly drives him into a somewhat depressed state. How Cornelius is...plus Elise's changes...man, Andrew will be torn apart inside.

Wow.

That made perfect sense to me.

I like his views.

Well, let's see...

Andrew's life is very much based around his morals and experiences. One of his most important views is that once a decision is made, one must go through with it. To show regrets would be bad, since he'd feel that that would mean one would have doubts about the decision. I'll add more at a later moment.

I can't say much for Vergel.

His views are about to change radically.

Here is Frey's take on life.

"A sword. I am nothing but a sword. Before, in a literal sense, but now only in metaphor. My life is a nothing but a lie, my name a symbol of division. I am no hero. I am nothing but a sword, the weapon of a flawed, racist perception of justice. I set out my quest to exterminate an entire race of creatures, the entire existence of a way of life, of sentient beings with lives of their own, and now...now the blood of millions of demons is on my hands. This blood is a curse, a curse that divides demons and humans to this day. The curse of my legacy does more evil to this world than Janus, Rabist, or any other evil presence could. Where they would kill and destroy, I have done something far worse. I have become a false hero. Some worship heroes, but I know the truth. Heroes never save lives, they only preserve ideals. For generations, my name has preserved the ideals of hatred between demons and humans. For years, my insane ambition to drive demon kind to extinction has driven the world into hatred and war, but no longer! No longer will I stand by and see my name inspire humans and demons to hate each other! No longer will I let my legacy be one of hatred! I will change this world, even if I must drag the name of Frater, and all supposed heroes with it through the mud. If I must be a sword, if I must fight for the skewed justice of hate, then I will target the true enemy of mankind. I will show them the truth, the true nature of this never-ending conflict: even if I have to bring them to their knees to see it done."

Here is what Leareth says(in JD's format of having the characters speak):

"I once thought existence was the only piece of all my time alive, but now I know that life goes on, no matter how many times you try to commit suicide. And trust, I've tried alot of ways to commit suicide, none of them worked. I also once thought that love was endless. ...Hah! There is no such thing as endless! One day, I'll "die" and on that day, my entire soul shall be ripped to shreds to become a piece of a new soul, somewhere in one of these universes. On the day that I can finally die an actual death, I'll let you guys know what I think about everything. On that day, I'll finally shed a tear."

I think Leareth's views are a little inconsistent. So, he's come to value life by trying to take his away so many times, or does has he simply given up on suicide? I'm not sure what he's saying here.

This just doesn't seem like it would be a helpful personality if you wanted to develop a complex character. In this instance, maybe you're giving him too much past and not enough room for development.

By giving him such a lengthy lifespan, I think we've made it harder for him to develop as a character. They say old people are fairly set in their ways, and with Leareth I think this might be a problem.

With a personality like this, I don't see how he can change much. Cynicism can be a difficult element to include in a plot because of how it forces politics of exclusion on other characters. The cynical character inevitably turns more people away than he or she draws in.

Later on, this will be a problem.

How do you plan on expanding his character later on? How do these traits pave the way for solid character development? Are they an adequate background?

These are the things you need to think about when doing these Takes on Life, guys.

DN, why don't you try again? If Leareth is like this now, maybe you need to think of some ways you can change him. This is a level of cynicism that I personally find hard to include in a plot. It's also a level of emotional detachment that almost crushes any potential for character development.

Everyone pay attention to this, now. This goes for all characters: including mine.

Take Cornelius, for example. In his Take on Life, he clearly gives his motivations. He explains why he does what he does, and what motivates his seemingly evil actions. You see into his point of view, looking at his rationale.

You must do this too in order to make this successful. Look into your characters' motivations and find what makes them tick. Find the REAL reason they do what they do.

This might take some thinking outside the box, and it may shock you to learn just how different your character can become. In my case, the character of Cornelius changed so much as I searched for what his deepest desires and motivations were.

Also, remember that no one can ever fully escape fear. No human. No angle. No one in the RP.

Fear is one of the fundamental forces of life in the RP universe. It's not always the best motivation, but sometimes it's the most real to our characters.

Here are some questions to consider.

What are they afraid of?

What do they love?

Who do they love?

What inspires them?

What angers them?

What experiences changed their lives?

What mentors taught them what they know?

Finally, remember that the language, thoughts, and motivations of people are ALWAYS (According the Sapir Whorf Hypothesis) ALWAYS limited to the scope of their experiences, both within a culture and within their personal life.

Try applying that to your characters, and things will go much, much easier. Think clearly about how their experiences, including the background story you already have, shaped their ways of thinking.

Okay. Hop to it, guys.

What are they afraid of?

Andrew puts on a brave front in many situations. However, he greatly fears what may have happened to Elise due to her time with Cornelius. And although it's not as big, he is also very unsettled by Siema as well as the bad Andrew. Seems simple, but after everything Andrew has been through, other than those things, he doesn't really fear too much.

What do they love?

Andrew loves learning about new things. He also enjoys exploration as well. He's a curious type of individual. If he ever got the chance, he'd even want to see the moon of Vanda to meet the other Lunarians.

Who do they love?

Andrew's heart belongs to Elise right now. However, on Terra, he loved his family and he loved being around his friends. The same applies to Vanda. Even if Andrew has grown slightly more distant due to the year in isolation, he still cares about those around him and would do almost anything to keep his friends happy.

What inspires them?

The thing that keeps Andrew fighting is the hope that he can reunite with Elise. However, now that he heard Nieve's side about Janus, he also wants to find a way to keep things stable for the general populace. If he can't get rid of all of the evils, he may as well let the lesser of all of the evils stay in charge and eventually find a way to oust said evil.

What angers them?

The injustices wrought by those who abuse their powers under Janus's empire anger him greatly. While he doesn't mind some of those who work for Janus (Arisa, Nieve, etc.) many, such as Krieg piss him off. He'll also have anger toward Cornelius, though it'll mostly manifest in sadness. He won't outright scream at things that anger him.

What experiences changed their lives?

The experiences that changed Andrew's life stem all the way back on Terra. From the moment that warlock killed the convoy from Sasune, Andrew's fate was sealed. That was a huge change in his life, for it set him up for everything thereafter, including even being on Vanda.

What mentors taught them what they know?

Andrew has had many mentors. Both of his parents, Nex and Jenna, played a huge role in shaping both his character and morals and Jenna is the one who even taught him how to cast basic black magic. Also, his great-grandfather, Exdeath passed down his stories from when he was in his prime (See the 2nd RP archives). Then, there was Martin, who helped Andrew unlock his dormant abilities pertaining to the void. Later, Solitaire will be a mentor for him so he can learn to fight more effectively with a knife. He'll still be a mage through and through, but he'll also be able to fight better in the event he can't use his magic, or if he must fight up close.

Loodness overload

Mizu

"Death. It is a integral part of life and the world, but nonetheless, the eternal darkness and silence of death is something I strive to avoid. For over two hundred years, I have thrown away family, friendship...everything in my blind obsession with avoiding my fear.Beyond that constant battle, life no longer truly has any meaning for me. My attempts at happiness have all failed, and if not for this persistent fear of the grave, my pitiful existence would have ended many years before, either by the hands of a pathetic, warmongering human, or even by my own hand. However...perhaps there is still hope for me. for the first time in so very long, I feel that I can ignore the past, the many people I killed just to live a few hours longer. For the first time, thanks to my...friends, I feel I can truly be happy."

...Okay, this was rushed xD

Andrew's is very detailed. Gives me a good picture of who he is.

Mizu's is also very insightful into her character. It really feels like this is her voice, Z. I think you've really learned to RP as her well. I'll definitely take this into consideration when I RP.

Although I'm not in the RP anymore, I took a look at this topic and I can say that this is a great, GREAT thing you did here, JD. Adds quite a bit of depth to the characters, though I'm the kind of person who likes to reveal this sort of stuff through the actual RP, so don't worry about me stealing this idea from you. ;)

I set it up so that you can use what you post here as dialogue within the RP.

At least, that's what I had in mind when I started.

I can't do the PoV thing yet, but I can do questions, what with Vergel being my personall Llendar Twem.

What are they afraid of?

Vergel is afraid of becoming useless. He's afraid all his power will be sucked dry. Later on, that soul eater thing will become his main concern.

What do they love?

Power. He loves being power, and would drop anybody for it.

Who do they love?

He loves no one here, but back on HIS Vanda, He loved Morgan Gerino, and even then, it was to give him an heir.

What inspires them?

The fact that he might become an extremely powerfull being. If he could get more power, he could match up to people like Jin Dao and Arus. Revenge will be sweet. He's also wanting to survive so he can fight Moot.

What angers them?

Mostly, being told what to do. He hates being told what to do.

What experiences changed their lives?

Finding out he's a reincarnated demon did something, I'm sure. He's devestated. He'll barely even talk to Moot, and they are friends, somewhat.

What mentors taught them what they know?

Really, he learned everything from himself. He learned how to be the villain that he is through the FE Vanda.

Hmm, you're right, JD. Though a few things I must explain, Leareth does not hold any cynicism in his heart except towards death. Yes, he gave up on suicide, but he holds that secret deep within him, away from the sight of all enemies. But in retrospect, it was a very rushed job, I could have done a much better job explaining the true mind of Leareth. X_X And here's my second attempt(using the thing everyone is using now. :D)(This is in first person for a few reasons. Which I would explain, but I'm retconning as my being wierd.)

What are they afraid of?: I always try to express the image of a fearless angel of Hell, and in some ways, I am. But the truth of the matter is, my heart is as cowardly as any mortal's, for my heart is essentially the same. So far, my most prevalent(sp?) fear is both fear itself and a small, unknown boy in another universe. Yeah, I said it, I fear a boy, but this child is no mere child. To give the shortest answer, he's my...well, he's related to me in a very complex way. This child knows everything about me, so I fear him revealing what truly lies in my heart, for even with all this power, I am still weak.

What do they love?: Ahh, you ask for love. I have loved before, and I will no doubt love again. So far, my greatest love was a petite woman I met about two thousand years ago. ...Now what was her name again? ...I think it was something along the lines of Helen...Ah! It was Helena! I saw her while participating in a small war on some backwater planet. Beautiful creature, she was. Don't tell anyone this, but to me, she was easier on the eyes then Aphrodite, though Aphrodite does have the advantage of eternal beauty and that damnable necklace of hers...Anyways, back to love. In some ways, you could say I have played matchmaker, for I have to sometimes lead certain people together to create more evil and other fun stuff.

Who do they love?: Oh! My mistake! I thought your previous question was about who I loved as much as what I love. Well, as I have already stated, I loved Helena, and I indeed thought her more beautiful then Aphrodite, though yet again, do NOT tell her I don't think she's the most lovely creature in existence. That goddess is a very vain creature, and that has detracted from her beauty. Anyways, I have loved more women in my life then I should have, but it is all to the benefit of the fool on the hill, as I am myself.

What inspires them?: Mmm, I am inspired by life itself at some times, but even life most take away from inspiration. In those dark moments, I find myself looking to my idols; Lucifer, my biological father and Micheal. Yes, even that bastard archangel Micheal gives me inspiration, even though he did beat Lucifer into Hell. Anyways, I also find inspiration in love, especially young love. It is such a sweet thing that leaves a honey taste on my lips. Oh! And evil inspires me,

What angers them?: I like to picture myself as a perfectly calm and controlled person, but that is a lie. Much angers me in this existence I lead. For starters, the archangel Micheal angers me, for obvious reasons. Next, all those chauvinist pigs and uber-feminists anger me, because they are just WAY to extreme in their belief that the other sex is inferior. I actually lived as a woman for good amount of time compared to my age, and let's just, the end of each month sucked. The one thing I truly loath is completely, COMPLETELY useless war. I mean, it's not even serving a purpose to me or Lucifer. That stuff is just idiotic on so many levels.

What experiences changed their lives?: Ahh, so many times in my life that have changed me. The first would be returning to seeing the dead bodies of all the people I used to know. That was back when I was a human. The next would be my ascension to becoming an angel. After that, my fall would be pretty important. After those three, my life become one giant blur of lies and treachery. But then again, I guess these most current events are helping to focus my mind again to what I truly am. Especially finding out that I'm just a reincarnation. That was kind've a mind-blowing revelation.

What mentors taught them what they know?: My mentors...Well, the first one was obviously my parents. They taught me everything that would become the foundation for me today. My next mentor was an entity known simply as God, he taught me all the subtle parts of the universe, explaining concepts far beyond the scope of any race of mortals in this universe. After that....Well, I guess Gabriel was a mentor, for he was the one that taught me about my angelic powers. He also planted the first seed of doubt about my servitude to God after he was banished, though I don't know what he's up to now. My next mentor was Lucifer. He taught me everything I know about evil and all that fun stuff. I guess my most recent mentor has been a group of women I met on a parallel world. It was during my time as a woman, Lucifer wanted me to experience both sides of the gender pool. They really taught me to always respect the wishes of any being, no matter it's visage or it's gender.

Hmm, I guess that's all I have to say in this interview. Well, I guess this is goodbye then...Adios, au revoir, auf weidershen and all that jazz.

Who can go to Heaven when all are murderers?
