shunsuke nakamura ... in his own words David Friel WELCOME to the world of Shunsuke Nakamura. From bathtubs and Hallowe’en nightmares to DIY haircuts and his favourite Celtic song, the Hoops icon answers a host of questions put to him by Celtic supporters around the world. From Melbourne to Maryhill, we received hundreds of questions for Naka and chose a select number for this special Christmas question and answer session. Sitting alongside his trusty interpreter Makoto Kaneko, Naka opened up to the Celtic View in this exclusive interview and gave a revealing insight into his incredible time in Scotland. Here’s a taste of what’s in this week’s 100-page bumper Christmas special. Who would you class as the best players you have teamed up with at Celtic? Mark Sanderson, Greenock There have been a lot of very good players at Celtic over the last three-and-a-half years, but I think Stilian Petrov and Neil Lennon are two of the best I have played alongside. They are both talented footballers and were very important for the team. When I first signed, I played beside them in midfield and they helped me settle into the game. Neil is still a big influence at the club as a coach. Naka, you have scored so many brilliant goals for Celtic, but what one would you say is the best? Anthony Nardone, Ross Mackay, D.Murray, Hazel Jeffrey I would say my goal against Rangers in the 2-1 win last season. That meant a lot to me and you could see how happy I was when I ran away and grabbed my shirt. Everyone thought I was showing off the Celtic badge, but I was actually showing off the Carling logo! I’m joking. That goal was special. Was it better than my winner against Man United? It’s not easy to compare them, because the one against Rangers came from open play and was from quite far out. It was more instinctive. I would like to know what your favourite Celtic song? Gary Shearer, Glasgow I love The Celtic Song. It’s the song that is played when we come out of the tunnel and I always love hearing it. We don’t have anything like that back home in Japan and I think it’s a good song. I have it on a CD at home and my son loves it. He loves listening to it at home and he runs about as if he is going on to the pitch at Celtic Park when I put it on. Hi Naka, we all love watching you play for Celtic, but what profession would you have chosen had you not been a footballer? Patrick Flanagan, Manchester That’s a difficult question, but I think I would have been a hairdresser. I don’t know why, I just think I would have enjoyed it. I like doing things that are very precise and require skill. I cut my own hair from time to time – that’s why it’s in such a state! I don’t cut the hair of my children though. My wife cuts it. She is better than me. What is your favourite moment in a Celtic shirt? David Shields, Glasgow There are so many to choose from, but I think my personal highlight was scoring a hat-trick against Dundee United in 2006. That was a rare thing for me and I will always remember it. Team-wise, winning three league titles has been very special – especially last season – while I will never forget all the big European games over the last few seasons. After you decide your playing career is up, are you going to look into being a coach or manager? Ryan McIntosh, West Lothian That would be good. At first I think I’d like to concentrate on coaching the kids and then move up from there. Someday, it would be nice to manage a top team in the world but at the moment I’m just concentrating on playing football. I still have a few years left in me. Link the mental image of his son pretending to run onto the pitch to the celtic song is just great! oh aye........a hairdresser?!
