Didn't have the game anywhere, but sounds like we finally produced a performance of value in this years CL, albeit against 10 men.

No complaints though. At this point, anything that gives us a wee bit of confidence is exactly what is required and excellent to bounce back from Sunday with a win against a very decent side.

Saw the McGeady goal, and the build up (great play from Naka initially). Good to have McGeady back and hopefully we will be onto bigger, brighter and better things in terms of both results and on-pitch entertainment. :huddle:

Just watched the highlights there, and there were some excellent moves from a midfield that was energetic and mobile. Impressive stuff and good to have the points in the bag.

Naka looked like he was a cut above at the quality end and that, for me, is why he will be such a big loss. Not happy about the thought of him leaving at all. I think he still could do a good job for us for a couple of years at least. Really has been an excellent signing. Hinkel and Brown too looked the part, Maloney seemed to be happy on either wing and really nice to see McGeady back.

Samaras? Running about all over the place like a headless chicken as usual. I hope he gets his sharpness back very soon.

As for the central defence, what can I say? We kept getting caught with the simple ball over the top, even against 10 men and this really needs to be looked at as it simply will lose us games at this level, either by having to play too deep to overcompensate for the lack of pace or from just not being able to allow the fullbacks to play, leaving the midfielders to pick up the slack in wide areas. Lots to think about. Will any of these things be addressed in the coming windows?

All that said, winning ways resumed, and now that the luxury of the CL is done for another year (sooner than expected), it will be time for us to knuckle down and win this league.

Bring on the SPL's other form team. :ynwa:

Easter Road on Sunday was a wee keek into what life after Naka will be like. :yikes:

As for Samaras, I was beginning to think that I was wrong about him, after the goals he scored at the start of the season, however, not so sure now.

I thought he pish last season and wasn't happy we signed him. Looks like myself and Doc might have been right about him after all.

Samaras is pretty inconsistent, and I am not sure whether he will ever work that out of his game.

Was talking to a Greek lad I know the other day who was waxing lyrical about just how good he can be, and at the same time just how poor he could be. Informed me that if I was a betting man I should put something on him scoring loads of goals for us in a handful of games then going ages on a scoring drought.

Sounded about right on the evidence provided thus far. I think he will get better under WGS though, as I think WGS knows how to deal with such types of players.

If your Greek mate is right and it looks like he is, then that isn't good enough for me. Not good enough to be an automatic starter for Celtic anyway.

Never thought I'd say this, but I cannae wait to see JVoH back in the hoops. :D

Ah, see now, you were always too harsh on JVoH. :tongue.out:

Seriously though, my problem at the moment is we have a few decent partnerships and combinations for the forward positions, but no clue as to what our first choice is up front. At the moment I would say JVoH and.... I suppose McDonald?

A few weeks ago it was JVoH and Samaras, earlier Samaras up on his own with Maloney or Naka playing off him.

Big problem for me.

I suppose the justification is that they all have a decent goal return so things eventually work out (three in a row and all) but that isn't good enough for me either. Sort of smacks of us stumbling on a solution as opposed to having any clear plan or forethought, something I find to be part of the very fabric of the club (mostly off the park) these days. Or, more accurately put, there is a plan, which is more to do with non footballing issues than footballing issues. A pain so to speak.

Not to digress. Samaras on form is pretty much unplayable. No one knows what he is going to do (starting with himself) which makes him very dangerous. He does, I get the impression need to be told he is something special to get to that point, and I am not sure anyone will know whether he is on the verge of something big or just has luck on his side in any particular run of good form.

For me, I try to simplify strikers into the three categories.. the ones that score goals, the ones that set up goals and the ones that do neither. So far, he is up there in the goals department. Not the best for trying to put in a box to describe, but, I think he is so different that he is an asset of sorts. Score some more goals and we will all stop doubting him, I am sure. Looks like a complete confidence player and to me, will take his cues from the crowd.

Said as much post game myself on the thread. We are going to need to find answers and the solution does not lie with signing some "wonderkid." To replace Naka means replacing the technical ability and, most importantly the one thing that comes with experience and maturity, the intelligence to pick the right pass at the right time and know instinctively which run to make.

Tough tough task. :(

thought it was one of his best games for us last night

his defensive work showed just how good his vision is.....more than once he broke down villareals attack as he was the only one who could anticipate their game

depressing to think that last night could very well have been his last CL game for us if he goes in the summer :sniff:
