Reserves on form in Inverness

A Ben Hutchinson hat-trick helped seal a commanding 4-1 victory for the reserves against Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The trip into the Highlands is always regarded as a testing one by Willie McStay and the reserves had to work hard in the first half to gain advantage.

The home side even pulled a goal back just seconds before half time, but Celtic restored their lead after the interval with Hutchinson completing his hat-trick to add to McGowan’s first half strike.

After a strong start to the match, Celtic’s opening goal came from nothing, with Hutchinson firing in a hopeful shot from the edge of the box which took a deflection off a covering defender and bobbled past goalkeeper, Kyle Allison.

The second arrived as Celtic poured forward, with a Koki Mizuno corner putting the home defence under pressure and the on-form Paul McGowan popping up with an excellent finish at the back post.

It wasn’t all plain-sailing, though, and as half-time approached, Caley fought their way back into the game, Celtic losing possession and Nick Ross breezing through a static defence before playing a clever reverse pass into the path of Rory McAllister, who duly rifled home.

“We expected a backlash in the second half,” admitted Willie McStay afterwards, but the players immediately got a grip of the match, creating chances, with Hutchinson seeing another long-range shot deflected past the keeper.

Then, as the full-time whistle approached, the Englishman sealed his hat-trick with an emphatic finish after Mizuno had shown the awareness to switch play from left to right with a well-placed cross-field pass.

“There were more chances as the full-time whistle approached and Koki rattled the bar with a magnificent 25-yarder,” added McStay.

“The performance was smashing, but although we were attacking and enjoyed a lot of possession, we were just looking for our defenders to be switched on so that you don’t get hit by the counters and sucker-punches.

“They also have to be patient and realise that we are not going to score a goal every time we have possession, you have to work for your openings.

“In terms of individual performances, a lot of the players did well and in the second half Ryan Conroy and Paul Caddis were excellent, in terms of supporting in attack, while Paddy again showed some great skill and Paul and Ben were a handful up front.

“Mark Millar and Simon Ferry also worked hard to dominate the midfield and Jason Marr was another big plus and he now looks like he’s getting near match fitness.”

The performance rounded off a positive few days for the coaches and reserve players, with Cillian Sheridan’s first start and strike for the first team giving the entire Academy set-up a lift.

“You enjoy every Celtic goal, but you jump that wee bit higher when it’s one of the boys who has come through the system,” said McStay. “It was a typical Cillian goal, something we have seen him do time and again at reserve and youth level.

“It was fantastic and fair play to Cillian, he’s worked hard and has had more than his fair share of injuries of late, I am delighted for him.

Surely he must be pushing for a run in the first team...
:hmmm:

It's cause he's black. Same reason Strachan won't play Bobo.

How else does one explain the very noticeable absence of black men in the team?????

First Balde, now Hutchinson. And just where is Joe Joe Doumbe????

I think we deserve some answers quite frankly!

Come to think of it, look at the disgraceful treatment of Didi Agathe too, a club legend no less.

Mo Camara, Momo Sylla, Evander Sno, Chris Sutton and Dion Dublin anaw! All treated appallingly.

Great thinking Chesney. Eradicate the team of big black men, great athletes and footballers and replace them with Scottish midgets like yerself.

Chrissybhoy may have the look of a suburban white boy, but the Evil Genius, is all black man.

He has the soul of the African lion and of course him and his wee brother John where adopted out to a immigrant Jamaican family in Norwich after their parents where tragically killed in a cycling accident.

His life is based on the Steve Martin movie, The Jerk.

hutchinson is celtic's last-action hero
David Friel

BEN HUTCHINSON slotted home a last-minute penalty to give Celtic a 2-2 draw with Hibernian and rescue a deserved point for Willie McStay’s side.

Hutchinson had fired Celtic ahead after two minutes and the Hoops went on to dominate the first period – only for Hibs to grab a shock 44th minute leveller through Steven Pinau.

The same player then fired the Easter Road side ahead just after the hour-mark and Hibs, having weathered constant pressure, looked to have condemned the league leaders and reigning champions to a rare defeat.

However, Thierry Gathuessi fouled Paul McGowan in the last minute to give Celtic a dramatic lifeline. The Hibs defender was also given a red card for his second booking and Hutchinson kept his cool to find the bottom corner from 12 yards.

It took Celtic just 14 seconds to have their first shot at goal. Hutchinson picked up a loose ball in midfield and saw his left-foot effort deflected over the bar. From the resultant corner, Celtic won a foul 23 yards out and the English striker’s curling free-kick was pushed wide by Andy McNeil.

However, Hutchinson wouldn’t be contained for long. Celtic worked a short corner and Ryan Conroy’s cross was headed on by Danny Lafferty. Hutchinson, lurking six yards out, smashed home a volley.

Celtic were pressing Hibs at every opportunity and Koki Mizuno almost added a second in 11 minutes. The ball was switched from left to right and the Japanese winger’s vicious volley was saved by McNeil.

The Hibs goalkeeper was called into action again soon after. Simon Ferry nudged the ball into McGowan’s path, but from six yards McNeil pulled off a point-blank save.

Celtic’s one-touch passing was a joy to watch and McGowan had a 20-yard shot saved after wonderful play from Ferry, Millar and Conroy. Kevin Cawley was next to have a go, with his shot being pushed onto the post by McNeil.

The Hoops continued to dominate. Millar and Ferry were controlling the game in central midfield, while Jason Marr was marshalling the defence superbly.

Hibs’ first chance came when Ross Campbell’s shot deflected off Conroy. The home side’s penalty shouts were dismissed by referee Ross Hamill. Left-back Paul Hanlon also blazed a shot over the bar.

Other than that, Celtic never looked in any trouble but Hibs grabbed a surprise equaliser on the stroke of half-time. A spot of pressure ended with Pinau finding space in the box and he sent his shot beyond Mark Brown.

Almost immediately, Celtic could have taken the lead again. Ferry waltzed past a defender and played in Cawley, who squared for McGowan. As the striker prepared to shoot, the ball bobbled and his effort trickled wide.

Hibs looked a different side as the second half kicked off and created the first chance. A set-piece found Darren McCormack at the back post and his shot was saved by Brown.

The contest grew more competitive as the half progressed. Hibs were making a real game of it and were giving Celtic little time on the ball.

McNeil, however, was called into action again in 59 minutes. Seconds after Conroy had almost converted a Mizuno cross, McGowan found space in the box but the Hibs goalkeeper produced a smart save.

It was to prove an important stop as Hibs grabbed a second goal on their next attack. A cross into the box was met by Pinau and he again gave Brown no chance with an emphatic finish.

Ferry forced McNeil into a decent save as Celtic looked to hit back. Mizuno’s swerving free-kick was then somehow kept out by McNeil, who probably produced his best-ever performance in a Hibs shirt.

Mizuno drilled a free-kick over in 80 minutes and McGowan came agonisingly close. Twisting and turning in the box, his looked on its way in but Blair Tolmie produced a good block.

Cawley, running from deep, then forced McNeil into another superb save as Celtic looked for the leveller they deserved. Marr had the last chance, but his header was saved by McNeil, before Hutchinson’s timely intervention.
