Celtic News  : A Right To Protest ? Celtic Park Stewards Get Heavy Handed

Posted by Admin on 2008/11/13 0:20:00 (33 reads) News by the same author
Celtic News

Regardless of whether you agree with the Green Brigade and their walk out of Celtic Park on Saturday in protest about the poppy appearing on the hoops, and the minutes silence for the war dead, there can be no doubt that Celtic have now taken the threat they posed very seriously.

Tonight instead of watching the first 20 minutes or so of the game, most fans were distracted by the stewards and police presence in section 111 where the Green Brigade sit. Even before the game started, the stewards and police presence at the stairwell was way over the top, even more than it usually is.

We sat in the North Stand and watched this for about 10 minutes before and 20 minutes into the game, there was a constant stream of stewards and police going up the stairs and walking back with 2 or 3 members, taking their season tickets from them and ejecting them from the stadium. There must have been in excess of 30 people ejected from the stadium tonight.

I can only assume this is their retalliation for the walk out on Saturday and having the gall to stand up and tell the board this is not what Celtic is about, this is not the way we want our club run, and we want the current board to quit.

One thing our current board must never forget, if the White's and Kelly's had done the same thing when the "Celts for Change" protest happened, they wouldn't be in the cosy jobs they have now, because Celtic would not be in existence.

We have a right to free speech. We have a right to protest. Celtic appear to believe this does not apply to the club's supporters......US !!

Personally, I applauded the Green Brigade on Saturday for taking the stance they did although I did not walk out. Others did not. However, whether or not you agree with what they did, and why they did it, Celtic did not have the right to eject these fans from the stadium tonight and certainly have no right to ban them for what happened on Saturday.I understand several fans are talking about legal action over this.
The media will love it, it will deflect attention from the huns and it is bound to get ugly.

The people running Celtic, those who made this stupid decision tonight, should consider what they have done, and what they are doing to our beloved Club. Even if you don't believe in what the Green Brigade do, they have a right to protest, and all this negativity will backfire on the Club.

I would like to hope that the other fan groups for example supporters associations, all stand behind you in a show of fan solidarity which we've not seen since the days the club was almost dead.

Frankly, if they don't, the club's already died a little.

It's time for change.

Now I know there are people who continually rolled their eyes when some of us talk about the harm there is in place when the board are going along with things independently of the support, but this is why.

Honestly, in terms of the supporter's say in running the club, what exactly is the difference between this board and the old one?

from looking around celtic cyberspace there appears to be a large section of the support against the banning, regardless of whether they agreed with the protest or not

I'm not familiar with the law on this but I wouldn't think they'd be able to ban them for a peaceful protest??

have a feeling they must have something up their sleeve as they surely knew the banned members would take legal action

As for them having something up their sleeves, I think you might have a point. Then again, this could be the level of detachment that the current big wigs have from everyone else?

Then again, we are talking about Uncle John Reid here, and he didn't care who thought of him poorly when he was in the business of being popular (as a politician), as long as his master's boots were licked. Now he is nominally in charge, is this simply a case of the bloody mindedness being expressed on a personal level?

Irrespective of his politics, which I always found to be reprehensible, in terms of ability, I never rated the man, so no amount of stupidity would surprise me. :banghead:

This shower of morons are supposed to be interested in the reputation of Celtic? Well here we are, with the perfect chance to hand the biggest defeat of all on TFOD, on and off the park, and what do they do? Bring it right back onto us, the fans. Surely they should know the media will never, ever let Celtic off the hook for anything, big or small, yet either they have completely miscalculated, or, more disturbingly, they are trying to rid the support of those whose political views do not fall into line with their own.

To me it seems that this is the most probably scenario, the following days will tell all.

Sounds a lot like fascism to me. On a side not, I wonder how many former players will be willing to give up their plush seats to voice their concerns over this?

This is a major own goal for Celtic PLC.

Banning these young guys and targetting them for what was a PEACEFUL protest will only help strengthen support for them and i've had a quick scout around many boards this morning and the support for them is growing

I fully back them and will not step foot inside Celtic park again this year

Sad state of affairs because the team are doing magnificently and they and the manager deserve our full support because what they have done in the last 2 months has been nothing short of amazing!!

But John Reid and the PLC have ripped the soul out of our club

Glasgow Celtic Football and Athletic Coy. RIP

Good to be back!

the fishal site just posted this.....

celtic football club statement
Newsroom Staff

CELTIC Football Club have released a statement following Wednesday night’s game against Kilmarnock at Celtic Park.

“In response to inquiries received by the Club today, Celtic Football Club can confirm that a number of people were ejected from the stadium during last night's match at Celtic Park.

“This was mainly due to the fact that these supporters were in the wrong areas of the stadium and followed numerous complaints from other season ticket holders close by.

“No supporters have been banned. However, each individual will be written to with regards to this issue and be given advice on how to conduct themselves within the stadium in the future.

"These ejections were completely unrelated to last Saturday's match.”

:hmmm:

so why did the stewards tell several fans last night that they were banned?

there was no 'fuck' in my original post tiger.....dunno what you do when you mess about with the quotes

there's something fishy about this whole affair.....I don't think it can be mere coincidence that the section that walked out at the weekend was the same part of the stadium that was - by all accounts - 'targeted' by the stewards last night

They're backtracking. But at least they are backtracking. They didn't expect the response they got and this is the only way they can save face. I'm glad it happened because if any one of the protesters is banned it's all over for me.
