Following on from my recent request, Ricky and Michael showed up at Peaslake with spare stems for my evaluation. Finally got chance to get out for a ride, yesterday, so the pre ride fettling involved some allen key action, as I replaced my current stem (90mm). Michael provided the shorter of the two samples, at 40mm, and I thought I'd try that one first. Removed the faceplate of my current stem, supported the bars to avoid stressing the cables/hoses, then removed the stem from the steerer. Removed the faceplate from Michael's stem, then slid the stem over the steerer and re-tensioned the top cap. Offered the bars up to the stem and discovered that the stem is for smaller diameter bars than mine - darn it! Quickly swapped over to the stem that Ricky provided (70mm) and, luckily, that one fitted. A quick bit of lateral alignment and tweaking of angles saw me ready to set off on a test ride. Did an urban loop of about 8 miles, with a few stops to photograph a few things (including my first snowdrops of the year ) and the conclusion is that it was definitely a more relaxed riding position, that warrants a bit more testing - need to do a bit of singletrack/fireroad to gauge things better.Still intrigued to try something shorter, but will get a few more miles in on the 70mm first. Thanks for the loan of the stems, chaps - good to be able to test things with out committing to a sale. BTW, I found this website useful, so thought I'd share it with you all. |
