Winter boots?

I'm looking at possibly buying some new winter boots as my feet get painfully cold after and hour or so out on the bike, especially at night. Last weekend I was out a fair while and I think I might of even damaged one of my toes as it's painful days after the ride!

I bought a pair of defrosters last winter, so they are the newer supposedly better design, and they really haven't helped which I'm a bit disappointed with. I think it must be the fit as with a pair of thick Sealskin socks on they are slightly snug. I bought them the same size as my summer shoes on recomendation that Specialized do internally size up on their winter boots and in the shop they felt ok with some wooly socks on.

I also ride clipped in so my feet aren't moving much during the ride, not sure if this is a factor also and if flats are better during the winter?

So do I get a size larger defrosters and hope it's just a sizing issue or go for a pair of Lake 303's as these seem to be the ultimate winter boot? Or any other suggestions? To be honest I can't really afford the expense of new boots but my feet are getting so cold it's stopping me enjoying my riding!

I went up 2 sizes for my Shimano boots (shoe 43 - boot 45) and they are perfect with a pair of woolie bollies i.e I can still wiggle my feet/toes.

Ollie has recently bought some F.O. Lake boots and they looked mightily impressive at Afan.

I've got the 303's - simply awesome in every respect.

Another vote for the lakes, also went up a size, put a neoprene foot bed in them and make sure they are not done up too tight as that's the real killer due to cutting off circulation.

I got the Lake 303's, definitely warmer than my North wave Celsius's.

They might still be on offer at halfords, collect in store and flash a BC membership card and you get another 10% off. Think they came to £120, and for the first time in any footwear, I went for wide fit.

However, after a weekend of pushing in Wales, the snug bubbly silvered insoles have popped under the heels and the flocking has come off. Waiting on replacements but reckon they'll do the same so might have to find some different insoles.

I hoped the Lakes would be well supported from users on here, makes my self justification a little easier  Unfortuantley the Halfords deal has passed bit doing a bit of online shopping I've seen them in the £150 range so not as good as your deal Ollie but certainly better than full retail.

However I want to try a few things first as I seem to be in the minority of people with cold feet and the newer version of the Defrosters! Next ride out I'm going to try a thin sock to see if gaining some room in the boot pays off, essentially the same as sizing up. So I've bought some winter socks that are thiner to try out but I'll take some backup socks with me! Also whilst playing around with the boot I noticed that the supportive insoles I use have small ventilation holes around the toes! This could be the cause of the problem if it's allowing heat out and cold from the sole of the boot around my toes. So I've replaced those with the original neutral support soles which are solid to see if that helps.

Just need an excuse for a quick ride :D

Apparently you can get hiking socks that have extra thickness under the foot and around toes, but thinner on top so they are not too bulky and compressed by the shoe.

I've found my Endura MT500's overshoes work a treat, out on the South downs day before last riding though massive puddles and still had warm feet, Just an idea and saves a few pounds, also saves cleaning shoes after just slip overshoes off and dump in the washing machine.

I have a set of those overshoes from last winter, didn't find them much use beyond autum tbh. Once it was wet and muddy on the ground I found that this came through from underneath and then you ended up just as wet and muddy!

Having said all that I have just dug them out again to try over my boots as another layer experiment :D
