So along with all the other projects I am considering, a slow upgrade of parts on my bike is obviously in order. First item on the list is new wheels and I'm currently trying to understand the virtues of all the different rims that can be fitted to Hope Hoops Anyway, new wheels are going to cost about £300 or thereabouts. After that I would like to upgrade the front mech and perhaps seat post, saddle, bars, stem...... you get the idea.Whilst browsing a well know auction site recently I found another Spesh Epic that had its groupset and wheels all changed to XTR components and currently up for just under £800. Now I guess the wheels are £400-500 let alone the rest of the groupset. My immediate thought is this is much more cost effective then upgrading my bike as it's already done and with good components. I would then have a chance to use the bike as is, compare XTR to SRAM/Avid and swap/build the best of both, then sell one to recoup some of the money. I know I'm probably having another 'moment' but when I think about spending £300 on some wheels for mine, I could probably sell mine for I guess £400-500 and then I have a better spec'ed bike for less?? |

Why upgrade front mech? Save money and spend it on something else biggest rip off is expensive front mech |

agreed re: front mech. just built up a new bike using a mate's steel frame and my components off a wrecked frame. The front mech is a Deore LX and is 6yrs old and is in total perfect working order. The cable and outers were shot to absolute sh1t hence changing gear was impossible. now it's smooth as butter. If it's absolutely wrecked though, you can pick Deore LX ones up for £10. M581A I have. Not sure you need XTR other than for bling. |

If weight saving is a consideration then one of the Stans rims would be best. If going tubeless, compared to most of the other options you just need some silly light yellow tape and wheel milk to seal them, unlike the rubber conversion kits for the likes of mavic etc, and the heavy double wall spoke beds for UST wheels. Tubeless ready tyres also lighter and cheaper than UST. |

This is the trouble with window shopping on auction sites, you get good ideas that seem foolproof in your mind :lol: Need to step back and think about it a little which I eventually did, phew. I don't NEED any of these bits, my bike is working perfectly well currently, I just fancy some upgrades :rolleyes: I think this really only means wheels to be honest as the component that has the biggest benefit and mine are, well, nothing wrong with them really but I find looking into this stuff a good way of learning. Tubeless is interesting only as I know little about it but I've not had too many issues with tubes to date. When shopping for wheels I have been avoiding Mavic/DT rims and looking for What I believe are Stans based on similar advice from a previous thread. There does seem to be a number of options here though, ZTR Crest/Arch/Flow and I don't understand the differences between them, how do you select one over another? I believe that list are all Stans based and are tubeless ready as you describe and not of the UST variety? Spokes, I have no idea, ACI S/S DB, DT......?? Hub, I believe I need a 135mm quick release as a direct replacement of mine? Minefield to pick up this lot :lol: |

With a £300 budget, you could try the Bontrager Rythmn Comp TLR wheels. Rear Front I've been running these on my Genesis for about 3 years now, without any issues. Pop some Bontrager Mud X tyres on, squirt some super juice in (ooeer) and you're good to go. (They should take non-TLR tyres, but I've never tried, so can't be sure) |

Thanks for the suggestion Bob, hadn't considered or even been aware of those wheels. Pretty good value also. Come in cheaper than the Hope Hoops but I still like the idea of those. Good suggestion though and I will keep them in mind. Already have a set of Mud X tyres and will probably be fitting them for the up coming ride at the weekend. Thanks for the translation service also :lol: |
