So I received a steel frame off a fellow rider and intend on stripping my wrecked Focus down and re-building the steel steed up. First step was to ditch the old BB. Would it come out easy? No fricken way. After a few days soaking in coke, it was time to try again. It's an octalink type with the teeth inside the cups, so not an external BB like you see everywhere now. The teeth inside were badly worn so the tool wouldn't grip. Whenever I tried to turn it would simply come out. Luckily the non-drive side had a external-toothed lock ring meaning I could clamp my 100mm fancy-wrench around it and swear until it came off. The drive side was a different story. It's external bit was polished and bevelled meaning no grip for the clamp. Hacksaw wouldn't make a scratch (wanted to cut some chunks out for the wrench to grip). So, I figured I need something to hold the BB tool in place while I turn....first though wanted some heat. So, I got 4 ciggy lighters in sequence to heat it up and then...Lightbulb moment. Bob's solution for a my pressfit headset! A long threaded rod through the BB, flat washer on one side, BB tool in, tool wrench on, covered with the second washer, screwed super fkn tight....turrrrrrn....YES! See the tool in all it's glory here. ![]() regarding press-fit headsets - the same technique. Get it setup with the bolt through the headset tube and slowly tighten it until you can get the headset bearing cases in place straight, then keep screwing (oh yes) until they're pressed in. No more phfaffing around with pieces of wood and a mallet. |

Excellent bodging Jim - definitely one from the "bigger hammer" school of engineering. Personally, I prefer to put the headset cups in one at a time, so that you always have a flat surface to work against. |

crocs - they're fake good idea re: headset, then you can concentrate on getting one in flush instead of going back n forth. good tip. yeah I had to watch a youtube vid and keep repeating to myself...drive side clockwise, drive side clockwise. I was this close to launching the whole thing off the balcony. Then proceeded to fit Ollie's forks but that fell flat when i saw how binkin' short the steerer was Just poking it's head out above the headset:
