Agreed all the shakes and **** are over marketed, same for in-ride energy drinks.

A big ol' sandwich with good filling e.g fresh roasted/boiled chicken breast on good granary/seeded bread will be ideal/perfect/ample/good. Throw on some spirulina powder and you have a protein explosion. Will taste good, filling and make you feel good. A pint of milk and choc recovery drink just makes me feel like a swimming pool for a bit...all full and liquidy.

As long as you don't come home and gouge on snickers and a tin of celebrations, then that's ok.

Andy,

I've just realised that you haven't talked about what you eat before/during the ride - this can affect you just as much as what you eat afterwards.

Ive recently had sucess with some homemade products from the Skratch Lab feedzone portables book. Some others on here can vouch for the tasty nature of these too. The rice cakes work well as post ride snack - carbs/protein and some suger and salt. Good and most importantly for me (and my stomach) natural

Andy,

I've just realised that you haven't talked about what you eat before/during the ride - this can affect you just as much as what you eat afterwards.

Good point Bob. I tend to eat a bowl of portage, banana & yogurt for breakfast which will be a couple of hours before I venture out now it's colder in the mornings! I will also normally eat an oat bar / flapjack before the ride. Don't bother with any fancy drinks on the ride, just take a camelbak full of water for hydration. I also eat 2 or 3 energy bars during the ride by having small amounts every 30 mins or so rather than having them in one go so they don't get too overpowering on the stomach. I carry a couple of gel packs with caffeine in case I really need a boost towards the end of a ride but I try to not use these as a general rule.

I struggle a little with having a high protein stocked fridge as my misses is a veggie and although she has no problem cooking meat, we don't have a lot generally in the fridge. This is why I thought a post ride shake protein drink might be a good idea. However I do hear what people say about them being expensive and pointless, just eat well. I'll try one and see if I notice a difference, if not I'll just go back to what I've been doing.

well, got back after a 60km road ride last night and had 4 fillet steaks and 500g of fries and a cheeky red wine.

Perfect.

Andy, sounds like a post ride recovery (protein) drink may be ideal for you. I do find that carbs post ride don't work - just make you feel bloated and still searching for more food.

Just bought a Torq recovery drink so I'll give that a try after my next ride, hopefully at the weekend.

interesting one on gels/sports drinks I have seen two athletes on the Olympic pathway (both GBR squad) in completely different disciplines , Both need dental work big time most probably due to these products, but prior to seeing me had been advised off this type of carb intake'as it appears to be off trend in nutrition

I am contacting the one of the Olympic dentist in regard to this as he reported that in general athletes at last years games had very poor dentition there is a study going on in sheffield

Never really thought of it like that but now you say it, I'm not surprised. Bit like the kids you hear about who's teeth rot as they have bottles permanently in their mouths with artificial juice drinks like Ribena.

Personally I just use good old water but with some energy bars to munch which helps break up the ride and give me a little reward to look forward too.

Here's what I do for post ride recovery...

20 minutes after

x 1 For Goodness Shakes Recovery drink you can get them from most super markets now.

http://www.forgoodnessshakes.com/recovery/

x 1 Mulebar Protein recovery bar *nothing artificial about these, they are all made from natural ingredients*

http://www.mulebar.com/collections/recovery-bars

When you get in , take a soak in the bath with some of this

http://www.radox.co.uk/products/bath-therapy/muscle-soak

When your all dried off rub some of this in to you leg/thigh muscles....or anything else that's hurting.

http://www.zipvit.co.uk/cgi-bin/popupprod3...e=&swords=blume

After about 2 hours later have a balanced meal.

In the evening take another For goodness shake and Mule recovery bar and rub some more of that Emu Oil on to those muscles.

At bed time, one last dose of emu oil on those muscles.

I did a 20 mile ride last Sunday , when I came back my thigh muscles were on fire and I had to crawl up the stairs......followed this whole routine.
Monday morning came, didn't hurt, no muscle soreness, no joint pain......felt like new!

So something worked.

Also for during ride Nutrition, and energy fueling, I do the following.

Drink: Torq energy drink, they use no Artificial sweetners, preservatives, colourings etc, something I spent a long time trying to find, you'd be surprised at the amount of energy drinks that claim no artificial sweetners and yet still have them.
I have so far tried the Vanilla flavour as I was interested by the non fruit flavour.....it's a little weird, I mean I like Vanilla and I like water....but vanilla flavoured water is just a little odd!

Food wise, I go for Mule Bars: which are made from natural ingredients

http://www.mulebar.com/collections/energy-bars/mulebar

and sometimes the odd energy gels.

You may notice I'm mostly sticking with Torq and Mulebar for fueling, that's because Torq is the only drinks maker I've found that do not use artificial sweetener in their drinks.
I spent a long time searching for a maker that didn't use artificial ingredients in particular sweeteners, which the body has a hard time processing...also certain ones trigger my migraines.

Mulebar use natural ingredients to make the bars and gels, also both are fairtrade certified and have Vegan / Vegetarian friendly products.

Ok so there we go..thats what I do.

Cheers for the detailed response :D Some interesting info in there and I'll look at some of those products. Had already selected the Torq range and will be trying their recovery drink soon.

Given what you have said about Torq and Mule bars, why use the Goodness shakes for recovery as opposed to the Torq product?

I've also been using Trek bars as a protein bar as they seem to use only good natural products. I use these during the day for snacks in case I get hungry as I'm avoiding chocolate bars and other rubbish.

I tried the Torq Recovery Strawberry and Creme flavour, I found the flavour was far to sweet for my liking, as you can only buy it in tubs (they dont do trial packs in it) I decided not to buy a tub of the other flavours in case they were the same, so went back to the for goodness shakes range as i'd been using those previously and the flavours are more to my liking.

I do the same at work, always have a couple of mulebars with me to stop gnawing on chocolate, crisps and sweets!

Fair enough. It's always a risk on flavour when buying a tub as you say so fingers crossed the one I have won't be too bad
