What if anything do you reach for to eat when you come back from a big ride? I ask as I'm often whacked out for the rest of the day after a few hours in the saddle and I wonder if I should be eating something specific to help me recover? More often than not I just make up some sarnies but I'm sure a protein shake or similar would be better? I'm trying to loose weight at the same time and keeping my overall calorie count down to 2000 per day. On a ride day I'm not bothered so much as I generally burn off about 1500-1800 according to Strava so I'm free to stuff my face  |

So long as your not lactose intolerant like me, a pint of milk when you get in is a good idea. Today having a 'y' in it meant post ride sustenance was a bacon and egg sarnie (gluten free), followed by cider, lots of cider. |

Sally bought a dustbin sized tub of 'For Goodness Shakes' milkshake powder for her JOGLE ride (and then realised they were providing all that sort of stuff) so I tend to make up some of that if I feel like it. However, it seems pretty accepted that Mars or any other chocolate milkshake has the same benefits as well

The kitchen content's in no particular order..... Seriously though....a good after ride recovery drink (I use High 5) with full fat milk...mmm.....oh and cake... In my first 2-2.5 years of meeting the M@ gang..I lost 3stone......no dieting just sensible eating...with a few treats once or twice a month. Good luck......riding will get you fitter and a whole lot slimmer. . DLT..... ......now where is that piece of cake I saw earlier. .....mmmm...cake |

A lot of research to show chocolate milk is good ,You do need to fill upon the first hour post ride as aparantly the carbs go to glycogen replacement there and then if. You wait to long it goes to fat storage, |

To be honest I just go with Dave's idea of open fridge and proceed to eat the contents...After yesterday's ride I ate: 1 Tunnocks tea cake. 7 crackers with goats cheese. Glass of Orange Juice Haribo 1 pork pie Several more crackers with goats cheese. Muller rice (custard) Recovery phase one sorted, me showered and the bike put away in garage I then had a glass of red wine, then it was pan fried lamb in red wine and gratin potatoes. Recovery phase two:sorted.

Unfortunately I do seem to be a little lactose intolerant It's not bad but it stops me from eating milk chocolate or drinking cows milk so I'm stuck with Soya milk on my cereal in the mornings. Lately even this has not been agreeing with me so I'm either toast or portage. Odd thing is that I can make up some oats with Soya milk and I'm fine with this but cereal seems to be giving me a dodgy tum!I'll look at the High 5 recovery drinks and see how I get on. I knew cake would be mentioned in this thread  |

That's made me hungry  Haven't managed to find the High 5 recovery product but I have found one from SIS and another from Torq. The Torq one receives good reviews on Wiggle so I might give that one a try. |

I'll either scoff or if I have some I'll have a protein shake. That High5 stuff looks expensive @ c. £25 for 1.6kg, I tend to buy 5kg bags of whey protein from myprotein.com for about £55 - It lasts ages (warning: these protein things tend to make you parp!). |

When I did a ride with up around box-hill with Bob, Nero and Alan without shoes on (yes the insane Denbies muddy one), I got back and had three packs of full-rack-ribs from tesco. When i'm not craving animal I have a high5 recovery shake with milk. None left any more, so it's just water and whatever's in the fridge. Buzzard has found some incredible ride food though...check this out. He made it for our 7am stanmer ride on sat...magnificent! Incredible Rice Cakes with bacon! |

I just eat whatever I have at home, or can find takes my fancy in a petrol station on the drive back if I'm starving. I have tried the recovery drinks in the past but not this year and I haven't noticed any lack of recovery. My philosophy is just ride, eat what takes your fancy - ride some more, rest when your body tells you. Repeat :-) |

A lot of votes for just eat what's in the fridge at home I've been doing this but I just find the 3-4 hour rides really take it out of me and I never seem to have anything suitable in the fridge I guess as I'm still fairly new to this exercise malarkey my body is still shocked from doing anything for this long so I figure I need to give it something to aid recovery as much as poss
