Anybody else out tomorrow?

19:00 rollout from the huts.

Judging from my 'incident' last week, and the rain over the weekend, I'll be running mud tyres.

Lights will be required at some point

I haven't got time either, so I'll be bringing the singlespeed, which already has them fitted (and has had the rear cog changed from 18 to 17 - gulp!)

There is a 1-in-a-million chance that I will be able to flex off an hour early and join you. (OK, probably 1-in-30 chance)

I'm sitting here waiting which is a miracle seeing as there is a train jam at three bridges, all trains terminated! Managed to get off after a 15 minute wait...

Well, what a revelation that was!

After my trip to the SSUK gathering, with Dave, I was beginning to suspect that 32:18 was a little under geared for longer climbs. When out of the saddle, the natural cadence seemed a tad too high, and I started to think that 32:17 might be a bit better.

I mentioned this to Nero and, at the July club ride, he loaned me a 17 tooth cog to try. I only got round to fitting it over the weekend, but was away in the Midlands, so it was difficult to assess fully.

Fast forward to last night, and I had chance to use it on familiar trails, where I could compare to previous rides. I can safely say that the change was a resounding success - with the lower cadence being more comfortable to sustain over longer climbs, and the higher gearing resulting in a more maintainable momentum.

On the climb up from junction 10a of the M23 (the first real test of the night) I thought I might struggle, but was pleasantly surprised to find that I was managing very well, and the summit came into sight surprisingly quickly. (part of this may have been due to the incentive created by having Dave breathing down my neck the whole way - but that's another story ;) )

So, the conclusion is that 32:18 is 'too easy' and that the higher gears are not a frightening as they seem - not sure if I'm ready for 32:16 yet, though ;)

Thanks for the company last night folks - it was good to see some old familiar faces, and to have more than just a couple of riders in the group.

As there doesn't seem to be much demand tonight (and because my legs still have a lot of yesterday's miles in them) I'm going to leave the SS at home and go for a short road spin
