For that money worth looking at the Specialized Camber and the Trek Fuel. Or if you can stretch a little higher and want something with more travel then the Norco Sight 3 SE was at Evans for about £1400. |

£1300 will get you a good bike: Either a full-on race 26in or 29er hardtail or a decent base to mid range full sus bike. Giant Anthems are good quality, wel designed, capable bikes that are very good value for money. The rear suspension gets very good reviews and the kit on an x2 is all good for a few years or more of hard riding ( looks like mainly Deore with an SLX crankset so nothing super bling but still going to work well and survive a few muddy winters and wet summers as well as being possibly a bit stronger too) I think you also get a bolt thru Rockshox Reba fork too which should mean good performance on twisty technical trails. You need to look at the frame, shock and fork on anything you buy at this price and make sure that that are as good as possible, don't get seduced by lots of XT or X0 components as a lot of the group sets from Shimano and SRAM that are one or two tiers below these are equivalent to high end kit from a few years back anyway. Same goes for wheels, you will be getting something basic and strong but most likely not tubeless ready (don't worry about this yet). Also remember that you won't be getting the high end Fox forks and shocks with all the clever damping systems until you spend closer to £1600-£2000 or more. To be honest the Rockshox kit is now very good and probably better value. Best advice is to see if you can try before you buy. Ditto Darths comments about looking for the last of the 2012 stock or indeed any 2011 bikes. Most changes from year to year tend to be cosmetic and slight frame and group-set tweaks. Just remember that you can upgrade a bike with a decent frame as you go on so you don't need a relly expensive high end bike to start with. To be honest If you are going from riding a 15yr old Marin full to a Giant Anthem you will probably think that you have been transformed into a trail god anyway... It will be a major step forwards

Correction...if it's a 2012bike you are getting fox suspension front and rear...it's "only" 100mm travel but, unless you intend to ride only on big mountains, that should be perfect for virtually all UK riding, especially round here...for £1300 that looks like a bargain. The only thing you might need to change would be the tyres for something a bit more grippy in winter mud and on wet chalk and that's really a personal thing anyway, other than that I cant see any problems, go for it
