I know this might sound a little odd but all the talk of Hobbz trying new things has got me curious .

Sooooo... Does anyone have a bmx sat in their shed suitable for skatepark stuff? If not I might have to get on ebay.

I was never allowed a BMX....

Or a Grifter.

Or a Chopper.

Or a Skateboard.

Or an Air rifle

Or a Motorbike (not even a Fizzy...unrestricted they can do over 70mph donchaknow and outrun police ford escorts, Simon Cook at school said so, so it must be true)

Or a Crossbow with explosive tips on the bolts like Rambo used (or was that a Bow and Arrow...I forget, but then again I was never allowed a Bow and Arrow either...)

Flippin' over protective parents eh?

I also was not allowed on the Royal Marines Assault course at Plymouth Navy Days in 1977 as my mum had insisted I had to wear sandals that day (with socks...Shudder) so I did not have appropriate footwear.

Anyone feel my pain?

Chadders, If you get a BMX you will have to buy a piss-pot helmet, a pair of Etnies, have trousers worn so low that they expose your pants and put playing cards in the spokes so it makes the right Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr noise and say things like "Dude" and " like, that was like just so Totes Emosh" so you can be "down with the kids" at the local pump track.

I was allowed a BMX, it wasn't very good but I spent all my pocket money on it and jumping the bank in Caterham triangle I looped it out and winded myself very badly. Cleared the bank just failed the landing!

I had a Grifter before the BMX, sturmey archer geared hubs do not like being jumped, they let you know this by popping out of gear as you pedal really hard and then you smack your gonads into the stem and bars (where you've cut the pad off so it looks more like a BMX).

I never had a chopper (my tackle shudders at the thought of the injuries that gear selector could inflict)

I was eventually allowed a skate board, then my Dad suggested I see how fast it went down a steep road to a cornish cove, it speed wobbled out from underneath at probably 20-25mph, it took days for me to squeeze all the grit out of my knees and elbows.

I used my Dad's old air rifle to shoot worms at my younger brother............

I had a few motorbikes and discovered that policemen sometimes really don't like you especially when they've been doing over 140mph on the motorway trying to catch you. I also found out about the terminal wallet battering falling off inflicts.

I never had a cross bow but come the Zombie Apocalypse I know which one I'll be ordering.

I now wear socks with my sandals because it upsets Mrs Ming and is quintessentially English.

Come the Zombie apocalypse I shall be using a sledgehammer and home-made flamethrower, unless it's the 28 days later type zombies that can run fast in which case I shall be using my Skill saw attached to the front of my car...

Chadders, as you might have noticed, we have drifted ever so slightly off topic and also we do not have any BMX bikes.....

After a 'less than optimal' day in the office - from which I have just returned - this thread has cheered me up no end

Thanks chaps! :D

As for childish endeavours, how about a very long soap-box kart, made from a scaffolding plank, or a 'bend in the middle' tandem, made by removing the front wheel from one bike and connecting the fork to the rear axle of another bike? (They both make me smile, whenever I think about them)

We attached an "Action Man" parachute onto the rear rack of my brothers Dawes Kingpin* to give us a brake chute for riding down the hill outside our house...

* for those that dont know, a Dawes Kingpin was a truly horrible shopping bike, both my brother and I had these....and not grifters or choppers... I still dont know why Dad insisted that he buy us these, perhaps we had been very bad...I mean, It had a flippin tartan zip up bag that attached to the rear rack on the back...ride this as a kid and you loose about 1million cool points and get beaten up a lot...by everyone....even grannies had more cool. I finally got an Eddy Merckx racer when I was 11 and my life could actually start. The only saving grace of the dawes bike was that it was virtually indesructable (and believe me, we tried) and therefore very good for "scrambling" which was the real precursor to mountain biking in the mid 1970s...before any California hippies invented it. IT ALL STARTED IN DEVON! I should sue 'em all B)

A sledgehammer is far to slow a weapon; one miss swing and you'll take your own knee out than become zombie chum. Suppressed weapons and a nice katana for me in the zombie apocalypse.

I did have a bmx, I was less successful at jumping than Ming though.

Had air pistols, kept shooting my brother.

Still have motorbikes :)

Well, I said Sledgehammer as it is the only really weighty piece of kit I have, yes I know its a one hit and they you are exposed so it needs to really count in close quarters combat, you have to remember that the Zombie Apocalypse requires you to use what is at hand, not what is on your wish list. A large hammer seemed to work well for Thor in "Avengers Assemble" and that was for a full blown Aliens from another dimension invasion so I dont think its entirely out of the question to use this on Zombies.

Now obviously I should be using something like a baseball or cricket bat and then move on to a Remington 12 Gauge as all the help guides suggest but as is Britain and all I have is a lot of 4x2 and a few water pistols I am not really sure this will cut it.

We also do not have a local Shopping Mall to hide in, we do have a few good pubs though....they might even have some Queen on the Jukebox to play during a fight scene using pool/snooker cues though so we can do things a bit properly.

By the way, I still do not have a BMX.

completely excellent thread - simple question posted that's taken on a life of its own :) ;)

(oh and no I never had a BMX - just to get that out of the way..)

I did however have a Puch Supersprint

I could have had it with drops handelbars but these were "too dangerous" (apparently).

very proud of it and could go down a hill standing on the saddle (hands still on the bars though). did lots of footpath bashing and general kid whizzing about and eventually got to visit my mate Mark in Sidley. He lived above the Greengrocers and was well hard. He was allowed to ride to my house and back on his own, whereas I had to suffer the humility of having my Mum act as backup car behind us in her Fiat Panda. No it was not like Bradley Wiggins support car :(

ah happy days :)

If its any consolation Guy ,I wasnt allowed a Chopper either (my dad said it wasnt a real bike)...but I did have a Claude Butler 10speed Racer......and it wasnt long before this was spray can painted a fetching metallic purple, fitted with a Banana Seat(just like a chopper!) and proper Ape -hanger handlebars...think American Chopper...complete with multi-coloured tassles hanging from the grips!!...not only looked kool(well I thought so at the time) it was also well fast, mind you I didnt change the brake cables so had the levers at the bottom of the bars about 2ft from the grips..what was I thinking of??

Earlier than that,in those far off days of endless summer holidays ,I was lucky enough to live next to Bookham Common(in Surrey)..think Tilgate with no access issues, but bigger...and the boys and I in our road used to build bikes..these consisted of a small frame stripped of everything,no gears and only one brake (we tried brakeless but my mate Dean hit a tree very hard one day and his Mum wouldnt let him out again unless he had brakes) and fitted with a set of Cow Horn handlebars...we called these Track Bikes and spent all our time searching out narrow paths and bumps to ride over and over, sometimes we timed ourselves along a set route and also had a go at building stuff from fallen trees, think hammer and nails and the blind optimisium of Youth......no photos exist from this Era,otherwise (possibly) Surrey could claim to be the birthplace of mountain biking..

Chadders,Ive just looked....i dont have a BMX either...

Guy,my Mum had a Raleigh Shopper, small wheels and basket on the front, which was pressed into use as school transport from time to time,if you sat on the rack at the back and held the bars with your finger tips it would go pretty quick downhill, until the front mudguard broke, wrapped itself around the wheel and catapulted me down the road.....dont remember much about it but a nice man in a van took me home.

This was the bike I used to ride from Bookham up to Wimbledon Stadium to watch Stock Car Racing,...at night...along the A3...and nobody thought anything of it!
It used to cost me most of my pocket money in Ever Ready batteries for those Pifco lights!

Ive now looked under all the cushions..sadly still no BMX..

Chadders,if you do actually ever get one (will this thread eventually bear fruit?) why not wear a nice Shirt and Tie ensemble along with some smart slip on shoes(hush puppies?) ..you know..just to be a bit alternative.

Now what you really want is a chainsaw, not an electric one of course as all the power will be down and you dont want to be lugging a car battery around which will obviously slow you down (remember it could be a 28 days later situation), no, you need to have a good quality petrol one, something like a Husqvarna and a lightweight Jerry can that could fit in a backpack, you would also need to have a few fuel dumps hidden around the neighbourhood too for when you go on foraging missions for food and medical supplies...

naw, chainsaws are too loud and the risk to self is high - dawn of the dead remake for example!

something like a scythe on a pole is ideal - sustainable, doesnt run of of fuel or ammo and keeps the Zs at a safe distance.

this is rather excellent listening.

Like the Scythe idea...nice and retro. Ok so maybe im wrong about using an electric chainsaw.

Hmm, Cordless?

You'd obviously need some solar panels or a wind turbine at home and a few spare power packs but I guess this is do-able with a bit of forethought.

Just better make sure that in the 24-36hrs mass hysteria and breakdown of society after the "initial event" you dont accidentally pick up a hedge trimmer when you panic buy at B&Q, that would really a big mistake...

And I still do not own a BMX.

However, as Halfords is next to B&Q in Worthing, it is not inconceivable that as I rush to get essential material for barricades and makeshift mobile weaponary, I may rush in to the large UK bike and car tat supplier and grab some lightweight transport but I would really go for something like a beefy singlespeed or a 29er with a Rohloff and rack mounts. A BMX may be useful for fast raiding but I am not convinced.

Ooh, look, a scented cardboard tree to hang on my rear view mirror...well if its the apocalypse then you might as well have a nice smelling car.

If, however we have an alien invasion and I meet a small, friendly, telepathic extra terrestrial with a glowing finger and need to evade the CIA then naturally I would chose a BMX bike as my vehicle of choice.

NO NO NO, zombie weapons must be silent, otherwise you will attract more of them till they overwhelm you! Also you risk infection from zombie blood in close quarter work.

In the Silent Hill computer game you find a heavy iron bar about 6ft long that is really good for dealing with the almost sexy zombie nurse things in the ruined hospital.

For the record I had a Hurricane BMX with sugino one piece crank, bear trap (copy) pedals (still bloody hurt though!), suntour 4 bolt stem, dia compe brakes with shimano levers, renthal layback post with no name seat and the "piece de resistance"; a set of VDC monkey bars with AME triangle grips! Sadly left to die in my parents back garden.......... :(

Mmmmm, Sexy Zombie Nurse.....

Er....

Anyway, getting back on topic, perhaps one of those spear guns that divers use would work, I just get a bit worried about the reload speed which is why I am erring on the side of power tools.

I did have a thought as I wandered around Sainsburys tonight, are we expecting to have barricade ourselves in our houses and wait until the supply of brains runs out and the Zombies all starve, I just think that could take a while. We could be fighting these things for months with no communication to the outside world and even such battle hardened methods as the Internet could be out of action. I mean, we might not find out if Chadders actually gets a kids toy bik...er, I mean, a BMX for ages.

The BMX thing could be a bad move: you never know, that group of slacker rad dudes down the local skate park could be a band of the undead just waiting for your Danny Macaskil double twist into pipeline imitation to go a bit awry and then they all suddenly stagger out seeking the old grey matter as a tasty afternoon snack....

See what I mean, wouldn't happen if you had a 29er (and a divers spear gun) A 29er could easily outrun even the fastest of zombies provided you had the right gearing (and the correct tyres of course but that's a whole additional topic that I will get to later after a glass or three of wine)

BTW, I thought in Silent Hill the Radha Mitchel character was actually a ghost, not a Zombie, so why the need of fancy weaponry? You can't shoot a ghost can you? For that you need a proton pack and trap at the very least.

....just did a quick scan of Darths thread....Nail Gun! Genius! Its got the range, penetration, big magazine of ammo, woodwork. Perfect.
