Top marks to Robbie for soldiering on despite it being only his second mtb ride, on a borrowed bike, which was quite heavy, with a loose crank arm and very cloggy tyres, whilst recovering from a punctured lung - and in very trying conditions. Excellent ride guys - south downs riding, with added single track, in the mud and rain, with a great bunch of mates

Blimey Rich, those pics reminded me that sunday morning was actually sunny Actually that was quite a tough ride: found myself dozing on the sofa this evening watching the Grand Prix ( a cheeky pint of ale was involved) and now I seem to be suffering from post ride aches. Chees to all today and I would just like to mention to Chadders thanks for the help sorting my brake pads pre-ride and I also need to explain that I don't have a BMX...

thank you to all, really enjoyed the day out on the downs and getting lost in the forest. im hoping that riding in the mud is much like learning to snowboard in scotland, you spend the day falling down rock/heather/fence (no snow) then one day you get to play on super soft powder with the skills developed on heather. looking forward to the next ride! ??? any advice on good product/brands to put on the chain etc after a day of mud then hosed down? cheers for now Fraser |

From a fellow snowboarder yes that's what its like. Riding on mud is like boarding in ice. Tens times as hard but a great way to develop balance and control. Great ride guys. Still finding mud! |

Fraser Great to meet you too! Whenever I saw you you were grinning despite the mud ![]() like what Chadders says mud riding is fab for your balance - for me its all about keeping relaxed on the bike and being smooth and gentle with the steering input. Other than that, momentum is your friend, especially in a straight line - its amazing what claggy awfulness you can roll through if you hit it with enough oomph and keep the power on. There are some "good" tracks around Battle if you want to have a practice. By "good" I mean slimy claggy yellow clay-based mud that sticks everywhere and offers zero grip. Lots of fun, especially if you mix up the route with bits of road to clear the tyres... The bridleway that starts behind Battle Abbey is a good un, heading out to Catsfield. Oh and avoid Darwell forest completely even if it looks tempting on the map. Its a walk at this time of year... Chain lube? I am really bad at looking after bikes - Guy will be along shortly to pull our socks up and offer good bike maintenance wisdom. When I do lube my chain I use Finishline wet lube (the one with the green cap). R |

Chain Lube I dont think it really matters what stuff you use . I think the first issue it it get it into the links and wipe off excess then to regularly wash and change it so you are not holding grinding paste on the chain oiling a dirty chain just makes more grinding goo For me its more about chain hygiene than product choice I also dont claim to be an avid bike washer

hello thanks for the advice re chain lube and riding on the mud mud mud. will go explore at the weekend, try and find those 'good' trails around battle. had a quality weekend, intense concentration during the day on sunday lead me to dreaming about single tracks on Sunday night. slighty weird i know. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Zombie_Survival_Guide http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_Z for those that are concerned about the zombie attack, for some this makes sense. cheers for now Fraser :ph43r: |
