Well, a link unashamedly nicked off STW and London cycling, this is a interesting article by an RAF fighter pilot about why drivers don't see you when you are cycling and conversely (and worryingly) why when you are driving you tend not to see things...

Personally I believe that, unlike RAF pilots, a driver is very unlikely to change their behaviour. Therefore, I’d suggest
fitting missiles!

From experience most of the time RAF fighter pilots don't see things is because they are too busy looking at their own reflection.

In all seriousness a very good article. Road posistioning is probably the most poorly utilised tool a cyclist has on the road. If a car wants to overtake on a blind bend make sure there is too little room for them to do so. Sitting by the kerb just makes people think they can squeeze past. Always approach busy junctions in the middle of the lane if possible.

My theory is that if a driver is being impatient the only person I will allow them to injure is themself!!! Not me and certainly not the mother and three kids in the focus coming over the blind crest I'm about to be overtaken on! If that means cycling slap bang in the middle of the lane then so be it.

I always thank patient and sensible drivers when they overtake and I have held them up a little and I will always wave drivers past at a safe place if they are hesitant.

Rant over!
