I'm out now I'm afraid, working that weekend and can't afford not to at this time of year.

Jim - a shame but understand.
Ricky Gixxer - I'm happy to look at B&Bs for you - are you still in?

Guides -

Always better to be with somebody who knows the good stuff rather than following a map.

Actually I disagree with that as sometimes it is more fun to feel like you're finding your own way. I also think that a guide can change the dynamic of the group too (which can be in a good way - its just an unknown!)

Amyway enough of my flannel - in this case I can see why to get the most from our trip getting some help would be good. So - anyone object to me seeking out a friendly guide to help us?

I'm confused, there's no point me staying in another B&B on my own, unless the cost is reasonable, I think I'll give this one a miss this time

Understand - seems like its just turned out this way - apologies!

Anyone else interested in coming along (sharing a twin in a B&B?) Speak now!

E.g. nice looking places like This. Twin room (can sleep up to 5!) for £65 split between you?

(they also have a single occupancy for £40 if you change you mind about coming on your own - it'll only be the mornings/breakfast that you'll be without us!)

As Rich said! Babyjixer the village is so small when we stayed last time others booked a B&B, and was literally across the road which was about a car's width anyway!

Nope I'm still on my own. Have you still got space for me and my bouncy machine Rich? Obviously I'll pay towards fuel. If yes I'll call the B&B tomorrow.
Also is there any bike storage facilities there?

Hope you guys have a great weekend. Give me a shout if you need to know anything as I use to be a local. Lydeard Hill car park is a good start point. Head over to Triscombe Stone (DH runs here), take the chimney down into Great Wood then climb back up in to Crowcombe and back around. Plenty of other good stuff, tends to roll well even in the wet, although hope it's dry for you!

There is bike storage at the R&C in the skittle alley. Take a lock though to secure the bike to a fixture in there, is what I did last time - others didn't think in neccessary though.

RickyGixxer - fab news! yes there's space in my car - you can either leave your car at my place or get a train up. Please do speak to the B&B - if they are full then I'm sure they can recommend another in the village. Sounds like you can leave your bike in our skittle alley at the Rose and Crown in case the B&B can't help (I'm sure they will, given the fact that MTBers visit a lot)

Thanks

Oh and I have been in contact with a local who is available that weekend to guide us , although has a few issues with his fitness. I will reassure him that we are not out to set new personal bests either!

As long as he can ride all day, otherwise we might have more fun just winging it with the guide books - it'll be good riding even if we get lost a few times....

The two forum names on STW who helped us last time were Buzzlightyear who came over from the Mendip to guide us - he was an experienced sensible guide. The other was Sharki a real local who was more of a singletrack flyer. The two made for a balanced ride - they were mates also.

I'm sure it will be good whatever! :)

Thanks Rich

If its Sharki you've been talking to its probably in our best interest if he isn't feeling fit.....

Jumping ahead a bit, what time is everyone intending to try and get to the B&B/ pub on Friday night...just want to know so I don't get there early and have to drink all the local ales on my own for a few hours with just my iPad for company which would really be terrible... ;)

I'd expect the Foster/Chadwick/Gixxer wagon will arrive sometime 5ish.

Good news - looks like we have ourselves a Sharki and a Buzz Lightyear guide These guys are real locals and come recommended by Woodsman (amongst many others) as being top guys and really friendly guides.

Really getting excited by this now !

Oh you had to ask!

According to the BBC its Showers (some poss. Heavy) on Saturday, better on Sunday.

Metcheck has things looking a bit more positive on Saturday but it's gonna be a bit chilly.

However, more worrying is the buzz over on the STW forum regarding the ride leaders....They are looking a bit keen

Lights? hmm . It maybe that the last part of our ride on Sat could be late as it gets dark so early now!

I'd plan on bringing them, just in case. I'm going to chuck my helmet torch in the bag.

I plan to talk to Sharki to finalise plans. Expect a pub lunch :)

Guy - ride leaders are well known to Pete and Alex, and thus we know they will be nice to us :)
