Having a little bit of spare time yesterday afternoon I decided to bunk off work for 45mins and go to Alsi to have a look at some their one day sale kit. I ended up buying a winter cycling jacket, some socks and some led lights....£22. Now bearing in mind this is all cheap kit here are my initial thoughts:

Winter cycling jacket (£15) in red and black, looks ok as a waterproof (untested for now) bonded neoprene outer soft shell with roubaix style material inside, nice material and certainly seems warm, lots of reflectives too which is also a good thing. Drop tail and waist has silcone grippers The cut is perhaps a bit too baggy for road work even though it's Medium size, the other thing is possibly the shoulders, not 100% sure about this....anyone remember Michael Jacksons "Thriller" video? Though to be fair this may also be the colour as well... I only found this out later as there were no mirrors in Aldi ( probably they will be in next months sale) and my moonwalking skills are decidedly rusty ( I can no longer bodyboard either) . Fabric is a bit weighty and the jacket wont really compact down so wont fit in back pockets, Boo. Montane, Gore, Endura etc should not be overly concerned but £15 is worth a punt while I try and find a proper lightweight road jacket.

Winter socks(£3) in the advert these are listed as waterproof winter socks but they are actually quite thin so not really thermal, also they are actually treated with something that makes them splash resistant: the tag says this will wear off after several washes...hmmm. So, that makes these a cheap pair of foot coverage with dubious water resistant properties but, being a man of a certain age, I know you can never have too many pairs of socks.

LED lights (£3) these are of the elastic strap-on your bars, Twin LED with Cr2023 battery type so are a cheapo clone of Electron Blitz or similar. Both are actually very bright so you should be able to be seen ( the front does not throw any meaningful light beam though), seem ok and usefull to keep in a Camelbak for emergencies.

So you pays your money...the kit seems ok-ish, my big regret is that I missed the rather good lamb shanks and red wine Aldi had on offer yesterday :(
