Having realised that I had all my bikes locked up with a couple of D locks that were about 20 years old ( one of which was so old it was one those you could actually open with a Bic biro ) and an old cable of similar vintage, I decided to get some better home security. Pragmasis protector chains seem to get the best reviews, are rated as gold security for bikes so the insurance company is happy, and their website allows you to order custom lengths and offers chain diameters that vary from "small yet meaty" through "come and have a go if you think you're hard enough" to the kind that Isambard Kingdom Brunel would happily launch ships with. I ordered a 2m long chain and a high security Squire padlock, I can't really give a test as, well, the obvious reasons of not being associated with any criminal fraternity or having access to any seriously good industrial cutting equipment, but the bikes are now all locked together (and into a wall anchor too though I might get a ground anchor as well) with a rather heavyweight chain and reassuringly chunky padlock. I can also say that compared to other heavy duty chains (eg the kryptonite forgetaboutit) the Protector chains and locks come out cheaper and get better reviews and ratings so it's a win-win. There are some good tests of these chains that you can see online and certainly for keeping things secure at home the protector chains seem ideal. They are pretty heavy (my setup weighs about 5kilos) which means that you can't really carry them around with you if cycling into town (so another new D lock is required) and you do need to be a bit careful when feeding the chain through nice bikeframes and expensive new road wheels. So as far as I can tell these seem to be pretty good and they are certainly good value and have all the necessary insurance and police reccomendations for peace of mind. I just hope no one decides to try testing this out for me... More info at Torq anchors |

Good review...but I think Ming really needs to do a test involving various dangerous power tools to find out whether they are better than Almax chains ![]() Whilst we are on the subject of locks, have you seen this portable beauty? http://tigrlock.com/product/ |
