Hey, thought this was the better forum to post in. I'm running 1x9 on my Felt. Which I like. It gives me just enough gears to get up all the climbs that Cannock has to offer. Just. Anyway, I'm forever losing my chain!!! Most annoying thing ever. I'm still on a tight budget so was wondering which option would be better. This Superstar chain device. OR a short cage mech rather than my long cage.. Which Is most likely to keep my chain in the right place?! |

You WILL need a chain device....despite what people may say....I run 1x9 on my Scandal..tried lots of things to avoid chain jumping off(big teeth rings, short mech etc) but you cant keep enough tension on to stop this happening...Superstar one looks good value ,Ive used SS a lot for bits and pieces and Ive had no problems...you get what you pay for. Also 1x9 on a commuter hybrid, even on the road this loses the chain from time to time. |

Right okay I thought that might be the case. I'm not sure but I believe that the chain is falling off bottom first... Which is likely to do with the chain tension. However I think I will go with the superstar guide first. Ta for the reply. |

Now all I gotta do is work out what colours I want. I think this is actually harder than working out which product I wanted in the first place!!! |

Not sure a short cage mech would work on a long range cassette most MTB's run, you tend to find short cage mechs on DH bikes running a silly road cassette. If you can save the pennies get a clutched rear mech. Since getting one the only time it's dropped the chain is when I've left it turned off by mistake. |

How long have you actually been riding that now tho?! Yeah clutched mech would be cool. But quite frankly once I'm back home I will only be riding this to and from places! And my Jekyll will be getting some serious abuse! Ideally my Felt needs new: Forks (ones that actually go up and down still and return to full travel) Brakes (ones that actually stop you..) Tyres (ones with tread left) Rear mech and shifter (ones that actually shift) New chainring (so it isn't destroying my brand new chain) + Chain device.... + Wheel bearings So you know... I'm basically just patching it up for now!! |

Have you tried putting the front mech back on and using the limit screws to hold it over the single front ring? If the limits screws don't hold it in the right place you can use a bit of gear cable, with the barrel inside the first cable stop and then clamping it into the mech. |

Yeah front mech is on and just means that when the chain falls off it jams itself between that and the chainrings!!! Not sure it is doing any good at all tbh. I was hoping it would! |
