Winter Boots; Specialized defrosters?

Thinking about purchasing some winter boots.

Does anyone own some Specialized Defrosters? Opinions? I have read they aren't that warm, but that sounds good to me as they can then be used in spring/autumn.

I don't have the budget for Lake. Shimano MW81's or Northwave Celsius are other options but they are +£40 over the price of the Spec's and could be too warm to get good use out of.

Hi Marc

Ive got Defrosters..a couple of years old now....yeah they are not brilliantly warm but buy a size larger and use decent socks ...have been fine for 1.5 hr sub zero commutes and can be used from october to spring before my feet get hot.......only downside is that they are not very waterproof...in fact in the rain they are only marginally better than a teabag....use overshoes to keep dry.......in normal(?) MTB use they are pretty good.

I paid about £60 quid for mine(bikeplus)...half the price of most rivals.

Overall Marks....7/10.......marks lost for water ingress, some regained for general useability.....

Thanks Robin. In your experience do they only let water in from the ankle or does it get in elsewhere?

difficult to say exactly but I suspect water gets in the toe somehow...this is in proper rain ,on the road, so lots of standing water as well...

Ive come to learn that there is no such thing as waterproof riding gear!

Didn't think that much of the Defrosters after trying them on, especially knowing Robins thoughts. At £60 they could have been ok but they are around £100 most places.

Going to try some Shimano MW81's and see what they are like...............

I know guys that have the defrosters and rate them but do say they let water in and aren't that warm but to me that defeats the point of them. I've had the Northwave's for a few years and can 100% rate them, warm and very waterproof. The only time they've let water in is when wading waist deep through streams in the Lake District.

I'm afraid it's a case of getting what you pay for and if you compare the price of warm and waterproof riding shoes with walking shoes they're very good value.

I have the Northwave celsius and got some Arctics last year as I suffer from cold toes. The Celsius is fine for now through to Spring no worries, I wore them yesterday and was snug and not too warm. The arctic is the warm one you only want to wear when it's cold.

Bonus is you can hose yourself down at then ond fo a muddy ride and still have dry feet.

Be quick though as at this time of year the Shimano's and Northwaves tend to sell out quickly.
