See here Lisa:

http://www.greenbatteries.com/aa-battery-faqs.html

According to them, Lithion rechargeables don't exist, Lithium Ion do but only serious techies will know about them, let alone use them. I think they come as a moulded battery pack a bit like some cameras use, not as singles.

The NiZN batteries look interesting though...but greenbatteries don't have AAA, but they must be available.

A normal AA battery is 1.5v, a Nimh is 1.2v, those NiZN's are 1.6 so the voltage can fall further before your headcam throws a strop and turns off.

thanks for the link, reads to me though that you still can't get AAA Li-on rechargeables...yet.

Is this right ?

Yes :( Have you found any Li-on rechargeables as AA's? I couldn't find any at all.

The NiZN sound like they might be worth a try if you can find a UK supplier. Not rechargeable but they might last twice as long?

I wouldn't hold your breath for Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries as drop-in replacements for either AAA or AA as the cell voltage is too high (about 3.6V).

If you're adventurous, you might be able to create an external battery pack using bigger batteries and put it in your backpack though.

It's late but just to set the record straight.

You can get Lithium batteries in AA/AAA but the are not the same as the rechargeable Lithium-Ion/Pol chemistry used for the rechargable packs. Then there are the button cells CR2032 etc.

As noted Lion/Lipo has a nominal cell voltage of 3.6v (actually 4.2->3.2) where as AA/AAA is 1.2v.

A rechargable AAA is pretty much as waste of space as it's capacity will be so low that the self discharge exhibited by all NiMH/NiCad batteries would mean you could only use it for low drain short life applications. In something like the helmet cam you would get around 50% of the life of a alkaline cell - which might be acceptable given they can be recharged.

The rub is you have to derate a battery based on the power drain and this is why your helmet cam is suffering, a standard AAA will be rated based on a low current drain. The best bet is to see if you can wire in an external battery pack - even a simple AA NiMH pack will give you x3 rated capacity but more importantly can cope with the demand so the derating effect is not so bad. gEEK OFF.

Of course you could consider replacing the camera with one of these D001 Mini web cam which have proved popular with the STW mob. I got one for £15 delivered and you need to allow another £20 for a decent mini SDHC S6 memory card but the internal LiPo battery is good for 2 hours of recording.

Thanks all, this is what we thought. External batter pack would be much much better but possiby won't work because our camera is a GoPro and sits in a waterproof case; any ideas on a solution.

Changing camera also not viable because only just bought this one and it cost £150 !

Any help appreciated....

Get loads of these! plus a good fast charger (temperature monitoring 1 hour type).

Very close to the capacity of an Alkaline AAA but rechargable. The GP brand that Farnell/CPC sell is not bad either.
