Hiya,

I just picked this up for pennies and cant believe my luck.

The old boy that I bought it from was a bit choked to sell as he has owned it from new but simply cant ride it anymore.

What do you think?

I dont quite know what to do with it as I keep meaning to build a fixie and this would be perfect but at the moment cant bring myself to start stripping it down.

I reckon some of the bits on that could be worth a fair bit. Almost too nice to turn into a fixie...do a restoration job :)

I second Ollie; gentle restoration, nothing too heavy or invasive.

Nice and old school. Ditto the sympathetic restoration idea.

but

Sorry to be a tiny bit picky but I'd check the top tube to head-tube...is it just me or does that look like theres a slight bend behind the gear changer? It looks like there is fabric tape around the top of this too which suggests an old bodged repair.

However it is a brazed and lugged Steel/Chromolly so unless its actually cracked it shouldn't undergo a sudden catastrophic failure like an Alloy frame, you might just be able to do something about that to fix it.

Regardless its a complete strip down and rebuild anyway (good messy fun :) )

Or is it just an early example of hydroforming?

This could just be to stop the gear changer from rotating around the top tube?

Good spot Guy,

The lug for the top tube isnt quite in-line and come to that neither is the lug for the down tube.

Thats what you get when bikes are built by hand. It doesnt affect the way the bike rides though.

The fabric tape is in fact an old shoelace and looks to have been put in place to stop the gear change cable dropping too far south.

Classic bike!
Would probably be a shame to completely deface it. I know some people from the bexhill classic cycle club if you need a contact for restoration?

How much did you pay for it if you dont mind me asking?
