Final Fantasy IX takes place on the four continents of Gaia. Most of the world's population resides on the Mist Continent, named so because the entire continent is blanketed in thick mist. Lands outside the Mist Continent — the Outer, Lost and Forgotten continents — are uncharted territories and not explored until late in the game. Several locations on the parallel world of Terra and the dream land of Memoria round out the game's areas. In Final Fantasy IX, the game's developers sought to make the game's environment more "fantasy-oriented" than its PlayStation predecessors. Since the creators wanted to prevent the series from following a redundant setting, Final Fantasy IX distinctly breaks from the futuristic styles Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII via a medieval setting.[13] In the game, the advent of steam technology is only just beginning to rise; the population relies on hydropower or wind power for energy sources, but sometimes harness Mist or steam to power more advanced engines.[14] Continuing with the medieval theme, the game's setting is inspired by Norse and Northern European mythology. According to director Hiroyuki Itô, "[The development team is] attracted to European history and mythology because of its depth and its drama."[ The eight main playable characters in Final Fantasy IX are Zidane Tribal, a member of a thieve group called Tantalus and a womanizer; Garnet Til Alexandros XVII (alias Dagger) the Princess of Alexandria who has a strange connection to "Eidolons"; Vivi Orunitia, a young Black Mage but very pure of heart; Adelbert Steiner, the Captain of the Knights of Pluto and loyal servant of Alexandria; Freya Crescent, a Dragon Knight from the destroyed city of Burmecia; Quina Quen, a genderless Qu whose master wants him/her to travel the world so that s/he will learn about cuisine; Eiko Carol, a Six-year-old girl living in Madain Sari, the lost village of the Eidolon summoners; and Amarant Coral, a bandit and bounty hunter framed for a crime committed by Zidane that he tried to prevent. Other main characters include Regent Cid Fabool, the charismatic leader of the Lindblum kingdom and uncle to Princess Garnet; Queen Brahne, Garnet's mother and the power-hungry Queen of Alexandria; General Beatrix, the powerful leader of the female knights of Alexandria; and antagonist Kuja, an enemy of the planet Gaia. Other minor characters and groups also appear; their significance and backstory are revealed as the game progresses. The story of Final Fantasy IX follows the exploits of a young genome named Zidane Tribal and his companions as they attempt to prevent a world war on the planet Gaia. The scope of the game expands when it is revealed that the recent warfare is merely a part of a greater plot for the planet Terra to assimilate Gaia into itself. A large portion of the story takes place before the events of the game and are revealed through flashbacks and dialogue. Five thousand years before the events of the game, the unnamed race of people from the planet Terra realized that their planet was dying. To save themselves they devised a plan to assimilate Gaia, a method of survival that they had performed many times in the past. To this end, they created Garland to be the caretaker of their world and the soulless Genomes to be vessels for their souls to inhabit once the assimilation was complete. Then the people of Terra went to sleep in a form of Suspended animation, the exact mechanics of which are unknown. Notably, it is always their souls that are referred to as sleeping, what has occured to their bodies is not revealed. Garland then created the Iifa Tree to work as a siphon for souls. Its role is to halt the flow of souls on Gaia, thus emptying Gaia of it's souls once all life has ceased. To speed up this process, Garland created a genome with a soul, Kuja, to be an "Angel of Death" and incite warfare among Gaia. However, Kuja proved to be too ambitious for Garland's liking, so Garland created Zidane, a more powerfull "Angel of Death," to eventually replace Kuja. Jealous of Zidane's greater power, Kuja abducted Zidane and abandoned him in Lindblum on Gaia when Zidane was still very young. Zidane was adopted by Baku, the leader of Tantalus (acting troupe and thieves' band), who raised him as his own son and to be a member of Tantalus. After losing Zidane, Garland created a third even more powerful "Angel of Death" named Mikoto, but later decided not to use her. Kuja continued to serve Garland as "Angel of Death" on Gaia, all the while searching for a power great enought to allow him to usurp Garland. Fearing the power of Eidolons, Garland used the ship Invincible to destroy Madain Sari, the village of Summoners. Eiko Carol, a Summoner, was out of town with her family that day and survived, though her parents died later. Another Survivor of the village's destruction was a woman who escaped with her young daughter by boat. Though the woman did not survive, her daughter was recovered in Alexandria and was adopted by Queen Brahne and the King to replace their own late daughter, Princess Garnet. Meanwhile, Kuja began producing the Black Mages out of Mist (the stagnant souls released by the Iifa Tree) to serve as an army for him to sell as an arms dealer, in the hopes of inciting global warfare. Final fantasy is my favorite final fantasy, i think it has the most creative characters. And quina is my favorite character. I dont get why many people dont like this one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_IX |

Please tell me the answer, is fate unchangeble? even at his most powerless man's existence is never without meaning. What was the start of all of this? When did the cogs of fate begin to turn? Perhaps it is impossible to grasp that answer now, from deep within the flow of time. But,for certainty, back then, We loved so many, yet we hated so much,we hurt others and were hurt ourselves.... Yet even then, we ran like the wind,Whilst our laughter echoed, under the cerulean skies... ![]()

I get the feeling that none of the above like quina. I don't know why no one likes her, i've seen alot of people dislike her. but i love her she is my favorite character, i mean she can eat enemies and learn thier attacks, she has a fork as a weapon which is unique and she is a very creative character artwork wise. Quina rox nuff said .i actually like everyone except amarant or whatever his name is. if i had to make a list of favorite character to least favorite it would go like this. most favorite 1. Quina 2. Vivi 3. Freya 4. Zidane, Garnet, Eiko (not sure which i like better) 5. Steiner 6. Amarant this only includes the 8 main characters. Oh yeah i remember beatrix, i think she is cool and better than amarant. I haven't beaten this game yet, everytime i get near the end; i get tired of it and stop playing it. but then when i want to play it again it's like two years later so i want to start over to remember what happend and then history repeats itself. oh but then a month or two ago i was going to start from a previous save but the cd wouldn't work!!!
