Factions. The thing that has made the Struggling Galaxy unique is the large scale interaction of politics and warfare. The ability to control planets, to command armies, and to delegate with other politicians has always been one of the things that has drawn people to this club. That is why we need to establish what we're going to do with factions. Are we going to have our old school system of "if you follow these guidelines, you can start a faction" or are we going to instead run on a system of several factors, a good vs evil power, and then perhaps the option to be neutral?

Those are just two ideas. Relatively unoriginal ideas at that. If you have some better material, please feel free to let me know. However, what I am really looking for is details on what you would personally like to see, whether that follows along the ideas of what I listed above, or another system entirely. Your input is what I want right now, so please: Begin discussion.

I think that letting everyone make their own faction would just end up filling the forum with tons of tiny factions going nowhere. In the interest of actually having something to move the plot along, having a few set factions with goals and structure would be better.

I agree with the established factions to begin with. 1) It allowed for people to be part of a team and work together in the beginning. 2) it also allows you to run club wide campaigns and also is fun to plan out how you are going to expand.

I agree with the established factions idea. By the way is there a New Jedi Order faction I'm missing?

Establish factionsright from the start. As things get moving another faction can be added if there is growing support for such faction.

While one would like to have player-created factions, I see the need for two things: One is continuity, the other is a solid structure as a base. Without those, anything a member does is doomed to failure. This isn't to say I don't agree with allowing player-created factions to exist.

However, it might be wise to have the already structured factions so that those who wish to create their own later on can use that as a guide, rather than letting people go off half-baked. This way, we don't run into the problem of having a faction created only to see it fail, and the members of said faction now scrambling for somewhere else to join.

This preserves the continuity and structure of which I spoke in the beginning, and still gives people a chance to be creative, which is what a thriving and happy club is all about. I will now open this to your opinions and feedback.

Thank you for your time.

The way I want to see it is that you have possible three or four (four being the max) starting factions. Each faction to be thought out and well organized, and talked about with the Admins/GMs. Then once those are up we will be able to start and get people into playing once more.

I also wish to see that each faction has one or two major story arcs going on, like maybe a major offensive or some political scandal. Something that is GMed run but allows plenty of flexibility.

If after awhile a group wants to split off from a major faction they would have to 1) Get it approved, 2) have a good reason for it (Not Oh well I think it would be cool), 3) Work out with the Faction leader and the GM on how to go about it (Again refer to major story arc) and 4) then run with it :)

That's just a few of my ideas in a nut shell. Also Ronso, there are no Jedi at the moment due to it being 9 ABY. (No New Order) Also I have heard a proposal to not have player characters be allowed to be Jedi or Sith.

Here's a breakdown of my thoughts on the matter.

1) If we are going to have player created factions, there needs to be an oversight commitee on if the faction meets criteria. The faction leader needs to be known to be capable of keeping a faction going and show initiative. Personally, I would require a background of the faction fitting within the established continuity, an outline of how the faction would work, and a few other things to be worked out with said oversight commitee. Then the faction would be required to set up the nessesary organizational charts and so forth. If we're going to have player created factions, then we need to make sure they're believable.

2) I am REALLY REALLY REALLY opposed to any significant Jedi or Sith roles. As in, I dont want to see an army of lightsaber wielding nutjobs. A few Force sensitives, fine, as major persons within a faction, but not "LOLJEDIARMY!". Frankly, we're at a point where the Jedi and Sith are crippled. Luke is pretty much the only Jedi left. But even if we go back to KOTOR, I'm going to stand by this point.

3) I personally want to remain post Endor but pre NJO. Mainly because that's a good area to work with, and I personally find the NJO era the worst thing to happen to Star Wars canon since the Prequels. And my opinion cannot be changed. That is how I will stand.

4) I'm going to re-iterate: THE FACTION LEADERS NEED TO HAVE SHOWN PRIROR INITATIVE AND ABILITY TO LEAD.

5) This commitee needs to be a group of admins and mods within SG that can be trusted with deliberating where this is going. This wont be an easy or quick process, but frankly, we need some structure.

6) I would rather see that Skrev's structure remain in place. Why? Freeform here has led to some very very horrible things happening here. Things that still befuddle me to this day. (ie: Imps just negotiating themselves into an alliance with the Mon Cals, a merc group packing more firepower than the Rebel Alliance in their hayday). Freeform should be left alone. We need structure and order. And Skrev's experienced at creating that. His infrastructure is very good, and utilize it to its fullest. I have seen him bring structure to many games and it has done them all very good.

I do respectfully disagree with the above statement, as structure and order should not be implemented as with a trowel, but a a framework in which a certain amount of freeform can be placed without upsetting the delicate balance of the timeline in which it is set.

The expression of any member's ideas or creativity should not be viewed as a bug to be squashed but, like a plant, to be cared for and nurtured so that it will grow to its full stature and be an active culture in the fullness of life in the club. If you use structure and order to help each member grow and reach the fulllest extent of their abilities and talents, when this club reaches for the stars, nothing shall be beyond its grasp.

Again, this is just my humble opinion, and I do now turn this over for your feedback.

Thank you for your time.

Alright, look. Maybe I'm not being clear.

Creativity = fine and well

Freeform = BAD! DANGER WILL ROBINSON DANGER!

Let me just refer back to the last iteration of SG, and we'll see why we need structure and order unless we want things to go south in record time.

So, we have the galaxy, fragmented for no really explained reason. The New Republic is off in the middle of BF nowhere, doing aboslutely NOTHING. We have two factions calling themselves the Galactic Empire.

One is led by a slutty empress who somehow manages to hold onto power and grab worlds that have had nothing to do with the Empire historically, but are suddenly having a change of heart. The other one fizzles out and all the holdings just end up being taken back by the other Empire.

Then you have a mercenary group that starts out rather humbly, but ends up going clear out into left field by managing to arrange contracts with Slayn & Korpil (the Verpines that make the B-Wing among other things), the Mandalorian colony of Concord Dawn (Jango Fett's homeworld), and the Incom Corporation. Just to start. Then, they manage to facilitate taking Thyferra and Anzat for the Empire in contracts, while aquiring the services of Admiral Natasi Daala's Maw Irregular Fleet, Captain Sair Yonka and his ISD-II, and Jaina Solo. This group also manages to create several very top of the line custom fighters, and has aquired a rather massive fleet.

To mix things up, an invincible Sith Lord, or the spirt of one, who was originally a Coruscanti Cabbie, appears with a massive force of...get this...TELEPATHIC GIANT SPACE CRABS, and has managed to take over the Kiliks to begin an invasion of known space. And NO ONE but the merc organization will get off their asses to investigate, only to end up not even having a percentatge of the force needed to defend the galaxy, muchless Corellia.

THAT'S what no structure and all Freeform got us. Hell, if I hadnt stepped up, the Empire would have aquired the entire Hapes Cluster because one ISD showed up to intimidate them.

So, Freeform, no. We need structure and order. Creativity, yes. But this group has done very poorly with freeform. Organization, structure and order will keep this or further metagaming from happening.

Alright. To further clarify.

I welcome creativity. It's what will make this happen. I mean, otherwise, we're on this side of screwed. But, we cant go with freeform. There just has to be boundries. I welcome good ideas to make this work, but I flat out refuse nothing short of fanboyish metagaming that would make the creator(s) of NJO puke.

Now, I kind of like the proposal made of that the galaxy is no longer unified, and the time for anyone with an idealogy and a small flotila of ships to make a lunge for power is now. However, the minor powers such as the Hapans, CSA, Hutt Cartels, Chiss, and whoever else I missed, are going to be NPCs, at least under this proposal. There will also be the various Imperial warlords, like Isard, Terdoc, Krennel, Zijini, and then the remains of the Alliance holding onto what precious little they have left. That's not to say that you cant make alliances with these powers, just dont expect to annex them.

I kind of think of the galaxy in terms of the EaW galactic conquest maps. Here's your planets in green, here's their planets in red, here are the rest of the open planets that are defended by neutral forces in yellow. Have at it. Granted there will have to be more to it than that, but just consider what I'm saying here. I'm all for made up factions, so long as they're feasible and well rounded in terms of their creation. It's about weaving a story, folks.
