I dunno, I just assumed you might have friends who were artists as well. Or had watched someone draw.

Wacoms are the best tablets from what I've seen. The Intuos are the really good professional ones, which is what I'm replacing my current one with later.

All of my friends draw the same way I do... So no help there.

But thanks.

Hey, don't take this the wrong way, but I wanted to voice something here that I wasn't able to back on MSN o_O;

It's true that there might be a few people who actually use that excuse you talk about, but there's a good way to tell. For one, the female characters will look much skinnier than the actual proportions, and though it's more dominant in female figures, males too have slightly longer legs than their torsos (go get some pictures of Cloud from Final Fantasy or Sora from Kingdom Hearts and you'll see that.)
So, if someone has a* realism body but throws anime eyes on the face, they may either be beginners or they are using that excuse, as you say.

However, for those of us who say we do actually draw anime (as I'm sure Tessie does, and I am trying to get better at it with her help =P), we draw it not because it's an excuse, but rather because we like the way it looks. Just like roleplaying, sometimes it's fun to do things different from what would happen or look in real life because you enjoy doing it. Not just between Anime and Realism, but things like abstract art against pop art--two different ways of doing one basic thing: being creative.

So, I'm not saying you're wrong at all, I'm just saying that you shouldn't make what you say is an 'exuse' a stereotype of anime artists. You know, just because there's people out there who'll yell nasty things at you and stuff o_o;

But, with that out of the way, I'm going to have to agree with Tessie on this one. If you saw my drawing thread, you'd see that I've been making (some) gradual improvement with each advancing sketch. What keeps me going is that when I look back on my drawings I try to look for what I did wrong (Tessie helps with that a lot too >.>; ) and think for a moment of how that character would look if I made them better.
Of course, seeing as Rynk and Avelyn are my two favorite characters that I roleplay with, there's a lot of sketches between them both--they're my motivation to getting better; because I want them to look as awesome as they are in my roleplays ^^d

But yeah, it all comes down to practice, practice, practice. The more you draw, the better each one is going to look. Find out new techniques that make it easier to do repedative things like hands and the length of the body vrs. the limbs. Both realism and anime have some pretty hard things you have to work on (Realism focused on little details that make it look, well, real, and Anime with all the abnormal proportions you have to deal with from how round and arm is depending on what kind of character it is, to what shape the chin is, also depending. Argh!)
I'm sure your abilities will begin to sharpen and improve very quickly as long as you try to get them as best as you can (and from my experience, that means a lot of used up erasers and sheets of paper ^^; )

((*fixed typo))

Alright, I'll reword my opinion into a slightly more offensive but true representation of my beliefs, sorry if you're offended. I'm okay with professional-level anime because it's very good. To me, just about anything below that looks rediculous and foolish. The problem with messing with stuff is that you have to do it just right or it turns out terrible. Most people from what I've seen don't completely get how to mess with the body so they leave it while making the face anime.

... You're not exposed to a lot of anime, are you? I see plenty of anime styled images that are under professional grade and still look completely like anime. My friends and I are nowhere near professional level and it looks like anime.

I'm not offended, don't worry XD I'm sorry if my last post sounded like I was--kind of hard to put tone of voice into text and stuff :\

But that's the very reason we, and everyone else, keep drawing anime. Of course it's going to look like crap because we're not able to draw any better just yet. But all those professionals had to go through what we are right now. I admit, most of my drawing looks like crap, but that's because I need more practice, and I'm going to keep drawing crap drawings with little things getting better and better slowly, but gradually, until they look good. It's going to take years and years, but I'm going to do it just because I like doing it.

But, it's all opinion, isn't it? You don't have to like anime, and I'm not here trying to tell you that you have to, to be around here and roleplay with us. I was just trying to explain my own opinions just like you have was all.

That's all; sorry if what I said was misinterperated into me sounding like I was yelling at you or something :\

It's fine. I'm talking all of this with a swig of vodka or however the saying goes anyway. Art forums always become a critique and criticism center so I just tried to say my bit and see if anyone paid attention, normally they don't so Kudos to you.

But Nani, I saw a few animes in my time and then the few homemade varieties people post around every now and then. I'm not really sure how much there is to be "exposed" to. And as long as the proportion alteration looks okay, it doesn't have to be professional, but that's where you find most of the understanding to how to alter the proportions, and sometimes even not there.

Actually, there's a lot more to anime than what most people think, but unless your are driven to a far enough obsession over it you really wouldn't know or care. >.>

How many other art sections on forums have you been to? I unfortunately haven't been to many, this is really the only one where other people posted there. >.>

A fair few, some nicer than others in their criticism. Around 5 I think were worth sticking around, you wouldn't be driven to suicide by the critics.

Well, kind of outside the current conversation, if your practicing realism, try just drawing a random item. Try and make something that looks as if it was a black and white picture. You most likely won't get it right the first time, and keep trying those things until you get the sizes exactly right. As you practice that technique more and, you will eventually be able to draw something to look as if it was sized down just by taking a few glances at it, from my knowledge. After solid immobile are perfected, then go on to animals and humans. From my knowledge, this will be eaiser than just trying to make a human perfect by trying a thousand times for realism art only, mind you. I doubt this method would help somebody in any way for anime.

Well, I'm not trying for 100% realism, I just prefer more realistic pictures to anime. I know I'll never make that 100% realism mark so I just cartoonize a little bit to make it possible, but still real-looking.
