The Frayed Leaflet - Paper № 1492½ Your Best Source for All Things Technology ~Under New Management~ Welcome to the first edition of The Frayed Leaflet since our last production run. Not much has rocked the world on tech since last month's publication, and I assure you, we are not closing down. The new management has just informed us that while we are now under control of our more, cosmopolitan rival, the Ether Herald, we are to focus on the good stuff, the technology that allows us normal folk to live our lives comfortably and without the need to bathe ourselves in Ether. Now, regular print shall resume and Paper № 1493 shall be in your hands, our dear readers, within the week. So, until then, keep your faiths high, your tools at the ready, and your inventive spirits free. -Emile Roreland, Editor-in-Chief, The Frayed Leaflet |

Revelations from ancient engine. -by Martti Varvio I'm sure dear readers you are all aware of the discovery made 40 years ago in in an Ether explosion. 40 years ago, Mount Iccarus was host to illegal testing of ether-based explosives not sanctioned by the crown, but yielded an amazingly preserved vehicle of some sort. Preserved although imbued with ether, the ether crystal, quite rare that even a small shard of it would fetch many a pretty penny, measured around 100 feet in length and 20 feet in diameter. Enough of how it was found, what is important is that the ether crystal was removed and finally we are able to understand it was. It was a vehicle powered by steam. It's unique wheels apparently meant it was to run on a track, which was included in the crystal. Apparently our ancestors had moved on to better technology when they created this behemoth, as we are still finding rubber tires, partially decomposed, in odd areas. Now, the boys at Vaxzon and Co. has spent a good deal of capital to recreate this engine, after having Royal inspection teams follow their work. 5 years ago, they were mysteriously told to stop. Now, as much as we Deists do not like the fact our freedom of the pursuit of science to be disturbed. We have speculated much. It is at least better than what the hokey-pokey of our..ahem..brothers at Zakythos had thought. (Whoever from there reading this, please, you would throw insults at us too, it is all in good nature) They thought it was some kind of Ether container, so sure in their haughty knowledge and conservatism. Now we know, in a sense, they would be right. While we know it can contain Ether, it has been revealed to be a steam engine. Yes ladies and gents, our ancestors had created steam engines. But this is nothing like what we have seen. This is all from Royal sources we at The Frayed Leaflet cannot divulge, but an ether-preserved book as well as some other books were present, and our dear brothers at the Towers have made it safe to thumb through the pages. Not only did we learn about how great our ancestors were, it seems we can finally pinpoint where we are in relation to them. Apparently this steam engine was part of a museum collection, and that this engine had been retired close to a century before the disaster. Now, besides the obvious ramifications these will have in the history courses in schools, the engine that was copied has come up with power ten-fold in power than our best. It seems that these engines, made smaller, can provide a boost, if not a revolution, into what we currently know. Experts and historians say that the 'dirty water' we use for our engines, basically ether saturated water, impossible to drink without the efforts of a magician or strong distilling stills, provides a better pressure and longer lasting steam that allows for the uses of multiple expansion chambers to turn the central crankshaft. Now, it is unknown what publications the Royal Government now have in their posession, but knowing our ancestors, we can be sure none of them are magic books, right? Now besides conjecture, we expect these new engines to be used in our Aerosailer fleet, granted, the Navy would need all their technical minds to combat the stolen Leviathan. Shame they can't find trustworthy and and competent minds to design their naval bases. Or find a more trustworthy place to put their naval docks in. Shame that a group of Chimeras took over the ship. Anyways, less negativity, we should all be happy and waiting for these books to be open for all of us. Our ancestors were engineers and builders, not mystics and hokey-dokey magicians, let's live in their footsteps shall we? Edited by Gunther Snyder, Jun 26 2009, 06:19 AM.

Editorial: In regards to your previous issue. -Gunther Snyder Gentlemen, I have managed to pick up an issue of your publication in my last trip to Hunter’s Hall, and I’m quite impressed with it. I’ve heard of your publication, and although I paid little heed of it, more reading on the updates through a competitor that suits my particular tastes, I’ve yet to find much fault in your review of Armory Technology. Now, one thing I’ve seen somewhat lacking is an editorial done by one Suito Tod, who I am familiar with as a plant manager at the Nord Feldt Armory Company. His claims that we can achieve ancient-levels of technology in terms of small arms are quite far-fetched. As we all know, the steam powered rotary rifles and the crank operated single rifles are big, cumbersome, and requires a crew. Therefore kept under use by the wealthier merchants and the Navy, but he doesn’t seem all that far off. Goodness we already claim to have magazine fed bolt action and lever action weapons, and the occasional odd revolver rifle. It is possible, with the use of the revolutionary steam packs created by one of our own, to power the rifle, but it would be big, cumbersome, and the rate of fire would surely be low in regards to accuracy. But let us not discount yet the possibilities. But I’m sure it would be stopped by the traditionalists, preferring the old, up close and personal combat. Well, this is as much as I can contribute without wasting my valuable time, I’ll surely return to settle down in Deist one day, just not in the immediate future. Cheers mates. Chikuomer Process electrifies Deist -Hont Márkus A week ago, the Song-Hebei Steelmaking Plant opened its doors to the public amidst great speculation and excitement. The claim of producing steel at massive quantities and cheap prices had intrigued many inventors. As we all know, steel is a rather expensive material to produce, and only top of the line Naval vessels can even hope to obtain steel-plate boilers and minimal steel armor. So of course the news issued a year ago was seen as prideful boasting for a new company. The sight of Royal Inspectors amazed us first few into the building. There was no doubt an investigation underway, little did we know that the investigation had already passed, and the Royalty had secretly put their weight behind this company. We were greeted by the two chief designers of this Chikuomer Steel, Mister Henry Kelley and Miss Bess Williams, cousins and inventors. Their spouses stood by their side when a massive egg-shaped container with a angled opening behind them started to turn. Steam pressure escaping cracks from high pressure piping, and before long, molten metal issued forth from the opening and onto a tracked ladle. Once full of the metal, it was moved across a track and onto molds. The amount of time, we were told, of doing this last no more than 3 hours. We stood there, amazed, as cool ingots of steel rolled off the factory floor. We did notice something though, that the workers used breathing apparatuses and hearing blocks, when asked about this, it was assured it was for the safety of the workers, and that a happy worker is a safe worker. Each worker was afforded a break time of 5 minutes where he is allowed to drink cool water, as well as given a snack. The strains of creating this cheap steel are great, the spokespersons said, yet not one worker has fallen ill in the 3 months of continuous production. 3 months of continuous production? Ladies and gentlemen of our esteemed audience, this seemed like a joke, but when we were sent to the storage shed, where we laid eyes upon rows upon rows of steel ingots, ready to be shipped and remelted for various users. Many of these piles of ingots already had crates being built around them, bearing the seal of the illustrious Yev-Rah Armor Company, others the seal of Snyder Arms. We can only wait and see what new items come from their factories. Meanwhile, a booth was set up, with Royal Inspection Teams talking to many other major company representatives, and with the blessing of the Chikuomer Plant's managers, their patents for the process were being given out, and we were informed that the first true products to be produced here would be new converters, as the giant egg-shaped container is called, to be sold to companies who wants to open up their own process. They are also working with other companies to better refine the steel, as the rapid cooling doesn't allow for better quality steel needed in high performance applications, but for general use, is more than adequate. This news is slow to spread around Deist, but the ramifications are endless. Who knows, the tracks for the proposed Deist Steam Line could finally be built, and we, fellow Deists, can finally trump our neighbors in having fast, efficient, and more importantly, engineering -bound transportation within our midst. |

Launch of His Majesty's Courier Ship (HMCS) August Wind a proud moment to Deists and Zakythosians alike. -Hont Márkus It seems only like yesterday when we covered the Song-Hebei innovation. Now, Imperial Couriers, the de facto courier service of our lands, has obtained a gift from the people. It was painted in Imperial colors, had a sleek look to it, and boasted 3 masts with square rigging. But the most innovative thing on the HMCS August Wind was its design. Built primarily out of steel, it still boasted wooden masts, but as an Imperial Courier vessel, it was outfitted with the best of technologies of the time. At its rear were two pusher-propellers, powered by a replica of the ancient steam engine found so many years ago. It seems that with the advent of the Chikoumer Steel, higher pressures and a greater steam capacity has allowed for a more efficient engine, and lo and behold, on a calm, windless day, we editors of the Leaflet were allowed a look aboard. And what an amazing vessel. The hull was composed of steel skin and structure. Solid cross pieces and a keel made of steel anchored the masts solidly into position, and the engine room was spacious as it can on a cutter. The wheel house was still to the rear, but advanced communications tubes from lookouts up in the crows nest to the pilot house allowed for speedy course changes as we were a privy to see. The immense power of the propellers allowed the ship to literally stop within two lenghts, while the large rudder and stubby wings allowed for quick turns. Many aboard feared the ship would roll over, clearly sending everyone on deck to the ether and the ship to be lost, capsized, but the fact it was not overburdened by the rigged sail meant there was literally no way it would've capsized. For defenses, we cannot fully say, but it sported a few light cannons. Speed was its main asset, and in two hours, all in steam power, we traversed in a figure 8 loop around Deist and Zakythos. Engineers from Deist and Mages from Zakythos handled the Levistone and Engine, the trained courier ship crew handled superbly, and fitting a crown courier ship, we esteemed guests were given some fine choices of wines. Sadly, as the HMCS August Wind entered port, we with heavy hearts got off, admiring the beauty of the vessel, shining proud amongst her elder wood and sail sisters. We salute you August Wind, may your journeys be safe and trouble free. -The HMCS August Wind will start a Deist-Gaea-Zakythos trip within the month, delivering light cargo, minimal passengers, and mail between the islands.- |
