TOKYO (AFP) – Toyota Motor said Friday it will recall 270,000 vehicles worldwide because of an engine fault affecting cars including its luxury Lexus range and Crown sedans, in the latest blow to its reputation. Toyota said faulty valve springs in certain engines could potentially lead to affected vehicles stopping while in operation. The automaker said it would submit its recall notice to Japan's transport ministry on Monday, with the latest action affecting 90,000 units in Japan and 180,000 overseas. "We will go ahead with the overseas recall according to the regulations of each country involved," said Toyota spokeswoman Ririko Takeuchi, adding that details of affected countries would be made available later. "The recall is due to defective parts of valve springs, which may result in abnormal noise or idling. In a worst case, the engine could stop," Takeuchi said. The world's largest automaker has been hit by a series of safety recalls and has pulled around 10 million vehicles worldwide since late last year. Toyota's announcement comes as the company looks to improve its recall process following heavy criticism of the way it handled safety issues in the United States that have been blamed for more than 80 deaths. The company said that the defective 4.6-litre V8 and 3.5-litre V6 engines had been installed in eight top line models including some hybrids -- the Lexus GS350, GS450h, GS460, IS350, LS460, LS600h and LS600hL as well as Crown sedans. Toyota said it had not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue. While smaller than earlier recalls, the fact that the latest problem affects Toyota's luxury Lexus brand is a serious blow to the company's already battered reputation, said Tatsuya Mizuno, auto analyst at Mizuno Credit Advisory. "It has renewed uncertainties surrounding the company," he said. "The recall may bring a psychological impact as this has happened to its most luxurious models, which Toyota offered to customers with full confidence." He added that the recall "may dampen consumer sentiment on its cars at a time when Toyota is still struggling to recover while it faces class action lawsuits in the United States." Toyota paid a record 16.4-million-dollar fine to settle claims it had hidden gas pedal defects in the United States, and US officials have refused to rule out the possibility of more fines as they review thousands of internal papers. More than 200 federal and around 100 state cases have been filed against the carmaker for alleged design flaws dating back to 2002 when a computerised system was installed to manage acceleration. The federal cases have been consolidated into one class action case. Toyota has moved to reshape its global operations as part of efforts to regain consumer confidence, boost quality control and speed up its detection of potential problems involving its products. The automaker returned to the black in the fiscal year ended March and forecast surging profits despite the millions of recalls that it estimated would cost 180 billion yen (two billion dollars) for the period. Toyota shares were flat in Tokyo trade Friday. |

Foriegn cars are still amazing. Just avoid toyota. Although I have always loved toyota's vehicles the fact that their reliablility and style designs are turning to crap have slowly turned me against them. First they killed off the Supra then the Celica and their NEW sporty car the tC is seriously underpowered even thought I still love it. As if that wasnt bad enough the one car I actually liked of theirs the tC was slaughtered when they redisigned it for 2011. I am officially done with toyota untill they bring back a real sports car like the Supra I will even settle for a celica. Untill then I am off this bandwagon. |

Well it's fair play. The foreign cars have been the same junk for years as well but everyone kept gushing over them and mocking those of us that bought Ford's, Chevy's or Dodge's for buying junk when their stuff was no better. So why can't we go after them with the same stuff they came after us with. I mean my Charger is beautiful, powerful, comfortable and has only needed a recall on a window module because the automatic windows may not stay up. The Charger is something like 75% US/Canadian/Mexican which is pretty high these days so I don't know how foreign that would be counted, and the only major part of that is the transmission which is the German junk Daimler left which will be replaced soon. So excuse me if I feel no pity for these poor Toyota owners who are knocked off their high horse and brought back down to Earth where they will be met with the same nonsense they threw around for years and years no matter how true or not it may be. |

You missed my point, I just don't get how Toyota problem's equals all forigen cars suck. It's nice that you like your Charger. But what I mean is where is the simple A to B cars? Dodge doesn't have those any more its either muscle cars or trucks. With all the crap I've seen my Dad go with his Fords and thier crappy electronics, quite intrested to see what his 500 does though. so that pretty much leaves Chevy. But yeah fuck Toyota, but don't lump the rest of them in there, there are still some nice ones out there. |

I didn't miss your point. They all have their problems, Toyota is the largest thus they get the most attention. However it seems that Toyota drivers seem to be the noisiest whenever someone else has an issue so it's gonna be thrown back on them and since they are the most popular every other brand gets lumped in with them, just like the American brands to foreign drivers. If GM sucks then all American brands suck. Is it right? No, but what is anymore? |

Also Dodge has the Avenger, Nitro, Sebring, Compass, Caliber, Patriot and Liberty as far as simple cars go with all of those being redesigned either this year or next to make them even better. |

Not really Ford and Chevy (whatever there re-branded as over there) are pretty popular in other places, but like you said "nothing is right" anymore. So keep on believing what you want to believe. And as for Dodge that's nice, but are any nice little simple cars, that the common man like me would want? Basically Neon like. |

How does "what I believe" effect anything? I wasn't referencing other countries, I was talking about our own. Generally most of the people that drive the foreign brands look at the domestic brands as trash and bash everyone off of GM's issues, just like a lot of domestic drivers base all foreign brands off of Toyota. The Caliber supposedly replaced the Neon and the Compass and Patriot are just Jeep versions though all are bigger than the Neon. They don't sell as well as the Neon used too, but they are the simple little cars. However Fiat has subcompact cars that will be rebadged as Dodge's just like the Charger/300 are going to Europe to be rebadged as Fiat's. |

Well my point basically backs what Davids been sayin. Most people who buy outside of America, mainly Toyota and Honda owners, have that smug sense that they accomplished something. Just nice to see Toy get a lil back. And honestly, for all the slander of the reliability of domestic cars, they seem to be holdin up better now then the other makes. At least no where under. And I like several foreign cars so not like Id only buy domestic. Mainly since GM killed Pontiac (knife in the heart) but again, goes back to the people who worship the Jap cars like they are the holy grail of the auto industry. Least the European cars (minus Mercedes) I can back bein nicer then some American cars (BMW, Audi) but at a very high premium |

I looked it up and American cars made up 7 of the top 12 most reliable cars on JD Power and Associates list for 2007 models. No Chrysler's on here, but this was still when DBAG owned them and they have cut their warranty and recall work by more than half since ownership changed, even Cerebus in there slice and dice short term ownership did more for Chrysler than DBAG. http://detnews.com/article/20100601/AUTO01/6010353/1148/

Japanese reliability is so overrated been saying for the past 10 years and not one of my corolla lovin friends listened, hell they still didn't care to hear me out when they all had some sort of sludge problem coupled with a few bad transmissions.. as for me I just have my hand me down 99' F-150 doing fine and the most of had to fix on it was a faulty AC unit which strangely enough was the same exact problem I had with a hand me down ford escort wagon. basically no "specific brand" is perfect like many people out there want you to believe. |

Yeah my 94 1500 is as reliable as you could hope for especially with 265000+ miles. If something goes out on it, it's likely just something every car will go through as parts do wear out over time. I mean I've had the normal Ram problems with the dash pad cracking and rust (a lot of which is my fault), but to hear people talk you'd think it was in the shop every week. I've got a log of everything that has been done to that truck since my dad bought it and outside of a tranny replacement at 179k it has been regular maintenance. |

Or somethin with tracks, thats for sure lol. Speakin of...the other day I was on patrol and went up a road only to find it blocked off at the end. Not both ends, just the one. So had to back all the way down this thing, at night, with a contaminated lake on one side and a small 10 ft drop off on the other. Not happy at this point so I tramped it and had that truck completely sideways goin up the followin road. Guy I worked with the followin day said he did exactly the same thing
