Floyd Mayweather backs out of Pacquiao fight, taking a year or two off
Pittsburgh Fight Sports Examiner
Scott Heritage

The proposed showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao seems to have been called of again permanently.

Speaking to reporters during an charity appearance with the make a wish foundation, Mayweather stated that he would be taking 'a year or two' off from the sport of boxing.

Mayweather granted the wish of a young man by the name of Armando suffering from Hodgkins disease, who wanted to meet his favorite fighter. During the course of the event, a reporter joked that Armando wanted to see Mayweather take on Manny Pacquiao the most, to which Mayweather revealed that he was taking another leave of absence.

Whether he will return to the ring at some point is not clear, and he says that he doesn't know what the future holds.

According to all other sources, a fight between the two pound for pound stalwarts was nearly made, and the two opposing camps were negotiating behind closed doors. Whether Mayweather has made this news clear to his promoting representatives at Golden Boy isn't clear, and if not than he will have been wasting their time in having them engage in talks with Top Rank all this time.

Without stating any particular reason for not wanting to fight again for an extended period, it will no doubt appear that Floyd is merely sidestepping Pacquiao, a fighter many believe would hand him his first career loss. Certainly this news will dampen the last days of Pacquiao's career as well, and his next opponent will now probably either be Antonio Margarito or Miguel Cotto.
This latest revelation will no doubt further damage Mayweather's public persona, which had already taken a battering when he accused Pacquiao of being a drug user without evidence. Not only this, but Mayweather's legacy will no doubt be tarnished as well, and even if he remains undefeated if he does fight again, there will always be a question mark as to whether Pacquiao would have beaten him.

MAYWEATHER KILLS PACQUIAO FIGHT, ANNOUNCES HE’S TAKING A YEAR OR TWO OFF

Floyd Mayweather Jr has killed all chances of a multi-million dollar showdown with pound-for-pound king and “Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao by announcing that he is “taking a year or two off” from boxing.

Viva Sports/Insidesports.ph monitored the TV interview during the “Make A Wish Foundation” charity affair in which Mayweather Jr made the statement when a reporter joked about Amando wanting to see him fight Pacquiao.

Amando was the young man whose wish was to meet his favorite fighter Mayweather Jr which Floyd granted. Amando is suffering from Hodgins disease which is a type of cancer originating from a person’s white blood cells..

Mayweather provided no indication of when or if he will return to the ring after his second break and said he didn’t know what the future was like.

He last took a 21 month break after a 10 round TKO of Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton on December 8, 2007 and returned to the ring on September 19, 2009 to score an easy twelve round unanimous decision over a much smaller and outclassed Juan Manuel Marquez after which he won another comfortable twelve round unanimous decision over WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley although Mosley’s title was not on the line because Mayweather refused to pay his share of the sanction fees.

At this point there has been no word from either Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer or Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who were reportedly negotiating quietly to try and make a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight happen on November 13.

His failure to give any plausible reason for taking one or two years off is certain to fuel claims that Mayweather was scared to fight Pacquiao because of the chance that he could lose the battle as well as his undefeated record.

Pacquiao himself, the newly elected Congressman from Sarangani is not expected to fight much longer and was looking forward to ending his career on a high note with a win over Mayweather Jr. But now that this opportunity has apparently been denied him Pacquiao is expected to face either Miguel Cotto in a rematch should Cotto win the light middleweight title from WBA champion Yuri Foreman whom he fights on Sunday, Manila Time or Antonio Margarito with the name of Juan Manuel Marquez also in the lost of possibilities.

Knew he wanted none of Manny.

Mayweather would devestate pacman. Mosely was supposed to be Mayweathers biggest challenge and he made Mosely look slow and washed up. Granted Mosely rocked Mayweather twice in the 2nd round but mayweather came back and dominated the 3rd round and never let up controlling the rest of the fight. Pacman ducked mosely thats the only reason maywether took the fight with mosely. so pacman is scared of a guy that mayweather dominated. Styles make fights and pacmans style is aggressive which is what mayweather does best against since hes a counter puncher.

Manny is really scared of needles and feels that taking any blood at all weakens him alot so it is a phsycological.

even Mayweather was ducking Mosely he took the fight to out do pacmans fight with Clottey. Also cotto barely beat Mosely in a decision. It wasnt like he dominated and knocked the guy out.

Cotto went 12 rounds with Mosley too. And Mosley went 12 rounds with Mayweather. So by that logic is Mayweather not that good?

I'm shocked that Mayweather would duck somebody.

But here's some trivia for you between Mosley, Mayweather and PacMan which is the only one to kock out Oscar DeLaHoya and not take a 12 round decision victory?

you cant base fights off of who beat who means they are better it doesnt work that way. Styles make fights anyone who has watched boxing or mma should know that.
Thats like saying every team that beat the giants in 2008 are better than the patriots since NY beat them.

De La Hoya was shit in that fight he was nowhere near his peak. That was the worst I have ever seen oscar look in a fight.

I realize that, but since I don't have them right here in front of me at my command I don't have a lot more to go off of until they do fight.

Besides you brought up the who vs. who thing first when you brought Shane Mosley into it. The only thing I was doing before was mocking Money.

I know, I thought about that when I posted it he looked awful in his last few fights but it was one of the few common opponents all 3 had of any stature and Mayweather and PacMan fought him relatively close together (Floyd in 07 and Manny in 08). I mean he had to have an IV to rehydrate him after the fight with Manny and I'm fairly certain he retired after both fights.
