McDonald's says no way Ronald will retire By ASHLEY M. HEHER, AP Retail Writer Ashley M. Heher, Ap Retail Writer – Thu May 20, 2:38 pm ET CHICAGO – Retire Ronald McDonald? No way. That's the message McDonald's Corp.'s CEO Jim Skinner gave Thursday to the red-haired clown's critics who say the cartoon promotes unhealthy eating and should go the way of the Marlboro Man and Joe Camel. "The answer is no," Skinner told a room full of shareholders who gathered for a meeting at the company's headquarters in the Chicago suburb of Oak Brook, Ill. "He is a force for good," Skinner said, adding that the nearly 50-year-old clown is an ambassador for the McDonald's brand and its Ronald McDonald House Charities. "He communicates effectively with children and families around balanced, active lifestyles. He does not hawk food." Shareholders applauded Skinner. And they unleashed a chorus of boos when representatives from the advocacy group Corporate Accountability International requested the famous icon be shelved — for good. "Ronald McDonald is a pied piper drawing youngsters all over the world to food that is high in fat, sodium and calories," said Alfred David Klinger, a retired Chicago physician who volunteers with the organization. "On the surface, Ronald is there to give children enjoyment in all sorts of way with toys, games and food. But Ronald McDonald is dangerous, sending insidious messages to young people." The Boston organization, which calls itself a nonprofit corporate watchdog, has spent the past two months mounting a "Retire Ronald" campaign. So far it has received support from about 10,000 people, said senior organizer Deborah Lapidus. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100520/ap_on_bi_ge/us_mcdonald_s_ronald_mcdonald#mwpphu-container just another scapegoat for lazy parents and other unamerican douchetards |

That's funny, I don't ever remember going to McDonald's on account of Ronald McDonald and I've been to McDonald's as much as most anyone I imagine. I also don't know of anyone that's ever said lets go to McDonald's because the cool clown lives there. If anything it would be the other way around. |

I don't have kids, but I was a kid and knew kids then and know kids now and what I said still applies. Never heard anyone want to go to McDonald's for the clown. I've never been in a McDonald's and seen a kid crying because Ronald wasn't there. |

That's because you're not supposed to see kids crying at Mcdonalds David. The point is that the Clown is there for the kids. And how would you know if some kids dont cry because said clown is not there? Are you in a Mcdonalds 24/7 to know for sure? I'm like you though, dont care, never cared and wont ever care for this or any other clowns. |

Well I've seen them cry there before, but it's generally because they aren't given the toy or don't want to eat something. I'm not debating that the clown isn't for the kids, I mean it's a cute mascot or whatever but kids don't go to Broncos games for Miles but if he's there they enjoy him just like any company with a mascot, look at Wendy's do little kids go there because of the red headed freckle faced girl? What about the energizer bunny or mattress man? Do they influence kids to buy batteries and boxsprings? No, they're just marketing ploys that you can associate with a brand. Just like Ronald McDonald. I mean kids like owls but are they begging to go to Hooters for the sweet avian life? |
