Richard Petty Motorsports to run Fords in 2010, merge w/Yates: Richard Petty Motorsports and Yates Racing announced today they have signed a letter of intent to merge operations in time for the 2010 season. The four-car team will race Fords under the Richard Petty Motorsports banner. Richard Petty: "This is a pretty big deal for us. We're thrilled to partner with Ford. We've talked with a lot of folks, but in the end it came down to the success the Gilletts and I think we can achieve with Ford Racing. Right now this deal is real new. There are lots of details still left to be ironed out so we don't have a lot of answers for anyone right now. We'll be working on all that in the coming days, weeks and months, but we do intend to have everything in place before the start of next season. I've won races with Ford and plan to again." Team Managing Partner Foster Gillett: "Richard and Kasey (Kahne) showed us Sunday night in Atlanta that they like winning quite a bit and Ford is going to provide the support that we need to go to victory lane more often. If you are going to compete with the other teams in this sport you need a lot of support. We bring a lot to this relationship as well. We've won twice this season and the power of Richard Petty is hard to beat, plus we have the support of some of the biggest names in corporate America." Yates Racing Co-owner Max Jones: "This is certainly a great opportunity for both Yates Racing as well as Ford Racing. I have had a long-term relationship with Ford and look forward to continuing that relationship at Richard Petty Motorsports. Over the coming weeks we will continue to work with Ford and Richard Petty to lay out the best plan for Paul Menard and all of the employees at Yates Racing. We will continue to field both the #98 and #96 Ford Fusions for the remainder of the season and look forward to continued success on the track with Paul, Bobby Labonte and Erik Darnell." Yates Racing Co-owner Doug Yates: "This plan is clearly in the best interest of the Ford Racing community. On a personal level, I am excited about the opportunity to focus my full energy on building Ford horsepower. We look forward to working with Richard Petty Motorsports to produce power second to none. There are many details to be worked out with Richard Petty Motorsports and as we finalize those details we will keep everyone informed." Director of Ford North America Motorsports Brian Wolfe: "I am very pleased that Richard Petty Motorsports has made the decision to switch to Ford for the 2010 season. They had choices to consider other than Ford and it's gratifying to us that they have enough faith in the Ford Motor Company and what we're doing to make the switch. We believe we can provide them with superior analytical tools and powertrain, and we will work with them closely on the technical front to help them become even more competitive than they are. What's also really cool to me is the chance to have someone with the class and the legacy of Richard Petty involved with Ford. Combine that with the chance to work with the Gillett family, who we have great respect for, and add some great drivers to the Ford camp, well, it's hard not to be excited about this opportunity." Note: Paul Menard will be one of the drivers in the Petty team joining #9-Kasey Kahne, #19-Elliott Sadler and #44-AJ Allmendinger.(Richard Petty Motorsports), the PR doesn't mention Reed Sorenson or what car number Menard will run.(9-10-2009) Didn't see this comming

Yates? UGH! I would rather see them in Chevy's than fords! So there is going to be NO good dodge teams? Isn't Petty the only Dodge team? Or Am I just missing someone? |

I'm hoping for HMS Chevys. ![]() Although in a way it's kind of cool being pretty much the only person cheering for the only team with a manufacturer. |

If Penske were to change he would make the switch to Chevy and have a deal like the Tony teams with Hendrick. The king is a smart dude. He knows Dodge is not long for NASCAR anymore and so he made the switch but I didn't expect it to be to a Ford. |

That's what I have heard. Reed is out, and so is Bobby from what I read. My thought is, why not put Bobby in the 98? he's a past champ, he can get in on time for 5 races, if need be. Why put that hack in there that can't race? I know Daddy has money..but I thought he wasn't giving him any more next year(or was it this year?)?

That daddys boy will probably always get sponsers from his dad his whole career. And as long as he can keep a sponser, and run 34th or 35th in points he'll never be out of a ride. |

How odd and I certainly didn't see that one coming. It all comes full circle lol. Kasey and Elliott leave Yates only to end up back at them years later. At least Ford didn't take any bailout money. Of course, Kasey will also be driving Toyotas in the Busch series with Braun. And years and years ago, Richard Petty drove a Ford (Torino?). Are they going to be running Roush/Yates Engines or Petty Engines? |

From @MartySmithESPN - "As a result of the RPM/Yates merger, expect the RPM engine shop to close. That's more than 60 people out of work next year." |

I think that's a BAD move. Why not merdge the two shops, and add the same info to the two teams, and make everyone run stronger/better?

The answer is simple. RPM has Dodge equipment and Dodge's setups that wouldn't apply to a ford and so on. Same thing when Chip and Earnhardt inc merged. One of the two organizations had to go because you cant merge two different brands together. That would be a conflict of interest. Edited by Gordon Owns, Sep 10 2009, 08:06 PM.

I was meaning the people. Why not keep some people on, and use them to help the team. Yeah it might be a different make of car, but the engine can't be that much differnt. And if it is, I'm sure they can help them figure something out. But it's a shame for over 60 people to loose there jobs. |

I wouldn't imagine Dodge wanting to let the competition know their secrets and how they do things even though they're average at best. Pride is pride though. And as tight as the economy is they cant just hire more people then they already have at one organization let alone hire more. What I see happening is possibly Yates firing some of his people to get key personnels from RPM. |

I was going to post exactly that. Kasey coming back to Ford and E-sad possible reunited with Todd Parrot. It's a good move for them, out of the 3 brands, Ford seems to be the one that has establized the most. I'm glad because now we'll have more FORDs fielded

Brands that have had economic struggles is what I meant. Toyota is far ways of economic struggles. They're the ones that racked up the most buyers during that "Cash for Clunkers" program. |

Toyota has just as much economic struggles as the others, they just never report it here. The Japanese have been bailing their guys out for years too. |
