Everyone has a personal anthem. It's the song you love to sing in the shower, the song you crank in the car and the song you declare from the top of your lungs, "That's my song!" Your song fits your personality and puts the extra groove in your step. It may take the cheesy pop tunes of Miley Cyrus or a smooth ballad from George Straight. Concrete jungle: Jeff Burton says "Welcome to the Jungle," by Guns N' Roses.NASCAR drivers are no exception. The men of the Sprint Cup Series are equally if not more passionate about their music. And each driver's personal anthem will be revealed Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway where the competitors have been asked to select a specific song that will be played during their driver introductions. It was a task no wheelman took lightly, according to Lori Worley, director of media and public relations at BMS. "This was a unique way for them to express some personality to the fans and they were very particular with their selections," Worley said. "Some drivers even changed their choices up to three times." Clint Bowyer, Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano all had multiple changes and agonized over their perceived messages. "I'm heartbroken that Joey doesn't want to walk across the stage to Thriller, anymore. He changed his mind," Worley said. "The drivers have been talking about these songs since last weekend in Michigan. They are having a lot of fun with it." Logano chose to go with Jerry Reed's East Bound and Down but Reed Sorenson will carry the Michael Jackson torch. "Michael Jackson was the man," said Sorenson, whose song pick is Billie Jean. "I'm not going to be moonwalking across the stage or anything like that. I just picked it because I didn't think anyone else would," Sorenson added. "And given all the recent news surrounding his passing I thought it would be a good choice. Plus, I just like the song." In Daytona this year, Sorenson said his father gave him three photo albums of Michael Jackson pictures taken by Jackson's personal photographer. "They are amazing," he said. "They are perfectly clear and most of them were taken of him right on stage. Most of the photos are from the Thriller and Save the Children tours. I have no idea where he got them, but they are awesome! I've always been a big fan of his music." bold Bowyer will swagger out to Elvis Presley's C.C. Rider while Scott Speed, always en vogue, chose the Black Eyed Peas and Boom Boom Pow. "With only a few seconds to work with, it's one that has a nice trendy beat that gets you pumped, and lets face it, BEP are amazing," Speed said. Man at work: Australian Marcos Ambrose will shimmy across the stage to what else? "Land Down Under" by Men at Work.Speed also helped Kyle Busch pick his anthem: Amazing, by Kanye West. "My all-time favorite. It's so KB," Speed added. Brian Vickers picked the song This Town by O.A.R. "This Town is almost a metaphor for what we do," Vickers said. "Each week we are in a different town, with a different excitement. It's thousands of people who gather and explode this electricity into the air. These people could be anywhere but they are here with us at the race track." Plus, Vickers has befriended the band since they sponsored his car for a race last season. "High energy, high impact, great lyrics. Its everything you could want in a song, and in a town," Vickers added. Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart also chose bands they've become friends with over the years. Stewart has selected Kid Rock's Bawitdaba, and specifically asked the song start with the lyric, "Now get in the pit and try to love someone." Appropriate for Stewart's charming and affectionate personality, don't you think? Newman chose Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy by Big & Rich and Kahne chose Life on the Run by Dierks Bentley. Carl Edwards put dibs on Jump Around by House of Pain and insisted no other driver use it. However, a string of drivers (Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt, Mark Martin and Jamie McMurray) all chose AC/DC hits like Thunderstruck, For Those About to Rock and Shook Me All Night Long. I pegged Johnson to be more of a James Taylor fan but whatever moves your needle Jimmie, go for it! Both Kurt Busch and A.J. Allmendinger chose Cake's Going the Distance. "I love that song," Allmendinger said. "I thought it would be perfect for Bristol." Agreed, but guys where's the love for some Beyonce? If I were out there, Survivor would be blaring! Not a single female artist was selected for Saturday night's showdown but I know Juan Montoya loves him some Lady Gaga! Nevertheless, the award for most appropriate song choice has to go to Jeff Gordon. He'll stroll out to the Rolling Stones' Start Me Up. Lord knows he gets those females, ahem, started up! And honorable mention goes to Michael Waltrip. In true Waltrip fashion, the driver who will move to a part-time schedule next season offered up some self-deprecating insight with a pick by Toby Keith, As Good as I Once Was. Note: Also as part of the special introductions -- intended to channel the old-school days of NASCAR -- drivers are encouraged to say a few words to the fans, address the crowd to get them energized for Saturday night's racing action. |
