In a time when mixed martial-arts is attempting to get sanctioning in a number of states, and when many people in the mainstream still view it as nothing more than a bloodsport, Frank Mir (a former UFC Heavyweight champion, and today someone who is feasibly still considered a title contender) may have gone out of his way to set the sport back ten to fifteen years if even one opponent of MMA gets their hands on this quote he put out yesterday during a radio interview with Mark Madden...
“I want to fight Brock Lesnar. I hate who he is as a person. I want to break his neck in the ring. I want him to be the first person that dies to Octagon-related injuries.”
Best case scenario is absolutely nothing happens in the ring, and only a few people here about this.
Most likely scenario is that this will get out either in the short term or the long term, and opponents of the sport will use it as a rallying cry (which could have a domino effect on areas that have legalized it or have thought about legalizing it, but who have faced a backlash from the public.)
Absolute worst case scenario is that something does happen in the ring (Lesnar or Mir are critically injured, or God forbid, get killed) and the death of MMA in the United States could potentially follow shortly. Twice, deaths in the boxing ring on live television have caused tremendous backlashes (once in the 1950s, and once in the 1980s), and both times the sport of boxing faced an uncertain future.
Boxing is a sport which currently rides a lot on its long standing mainstream history (which is over a century old at this point), but mixed martial-arts in the United States has no such buffer zone to work with. Should something bad happen at a major MMA event (especially after something like this having been said by Mir) it would be almost impossible to prevent a major regression to the dark ages for the major promotions (and possible death for smaller promotions in the states.)
Frank Mir get ready to be fed through the cage like it's a meat grinder courtesy of your UFC Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

as if Brock didn't have enough motivation to beat Mir's face in already. Mir just keeps adding to it.

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates – Anderson Silva is so good, and has been so dominant as the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s middleweight title-holder, that it’s big news when he doesn’t obliterate an opponent. Silva already holds the UFC record for consecutive wins (10) and, on Saturday, will break a tie with Matt Hughes and Tito Ortiz if he defeats Demian Maia in the main event of UFC 112 at Ferrari World and reels off the sixth consecutive successful defense of his middleweight belt. But how does UFC welterweight champion Anderson Silva grab you? Or UFC light heavyweight champion Anderson Silva? Or, better yet, UFC heavyweight champion Anderson Silva? Well, it’s far from a guarantee that he’ll ever fight for even one of those other belts, but it’s not because the thought hasn’t crossed the soon-to-be 35-year-old’s mind. He’s not the type to call out an opponent and challenge a champion in another division, but he said after a news conference Wednesday that he is seriously considering a drop to 170 pounds for two fights. One he’d take to see if he could successfully make the welterweight limit, and a second would potentially be for a Superfight with champion Georges St. Pierre. St. Pierre has put a stranglehold on the welterweight division similar to the one that Silva has on the middleweights. So, naturally, talk of a St. Pierre-Silva fight has arisen. UFC president Dana White has put a damper on the talk recently, however, because he’s begun to believe that Silva is too big for St. Pierre. If Silva were to drop to 170 to meet St. Pierre, it would create perhaps the biggest fight in UFC history, matching the top two pound-for-pound fighters in the world. Silva said it’s possible, though he was careful not to demand a title bout or call out St. Pierre. “I’d like to test myself and I always love to take on new challenges,” Silva said of his thoughts about a drop to 170 pounds from the middleweight limit of 185. “It’s not that I want to go fight Georges St. Pierre for his title. There’s no doubt in my mind that he’s the reigning champion, the absolute champion, in that weight category. But I just want to test myself and see how I’d do at that weight.” Silva, who recently signed a new eight-fight contract with the UFC, said he hasn’t made 170 pounds in about five years. He’s not looking to campaign in the division, however, and two fights at the weight wouldn’t change that, even if he were successful. Silva has the otherworldly kind of talent, though, to make an even bigger splash. He’s already knocked out Forrest Griffin, a former light heavyweight champion and if close friend and training partner Lyoto Machida weren’t holding the UFC’s 205-pound belt, he might be eyeing a run at it too. He also acknowledged an interest in fighting at heavyweight. He’s got the kind of frame to add on the weight and could compete around 225 pounds. Whether that would be enough to allow him to deal with the behemoths at the top of the division – such as champion Brock Lesnar and No. 1 contender Shane Carwin – is another matter entirely. But one of the things that makes Silva so great is that he thinks big. “It would be disrespectful for me to say I want to fight Brock Lesnar, who is the heavyweight champion right now,” Silva said. “I need to test myself at heavyweight first before I talk about who I want to fight. But I definitely have interest in testing myself as a heavyweight.” It would be an enormous boost for the sport if he could make a run at four UFC belts, much like golf benefited in 2000 from Tiger Woods’ run at the grand slam. There are only two men in UFC history who have held championships in multiple divisions. B.J. Penn has been champion at welterweight and currently holds the lightweight belt. Randy Couture has had multiple stints as both the heavyweight and light heavyweight champion. Four is unheard of, though, and the race to accomplish it would be an enormous story. “I understand how big that would be,” Silva said of a run at all four belts. “I already have [three] titles [in the UFC, Shooto and Cage Rage] and it would be a great thing to try to accomplish. Only time will tell what will happen. I would like to try to go to do that, but I’ve had success by focusing on what I have to do and nothing else. I just take one step at a time.” Hughes praised Silva’s mental toughness and said it’s been a key reason why he’s been able to hang on to the belt so long. Penn shook his head at Silva’s longevity at the top. Silva has held the belt since Oct. 14, 2006, and recently broke Ortiz’s record for most days as the champion. Ortiz held the UFC’s light heavyweight belt from April 14, 2000, until Sept. 24, 2003, when he lost it to Couture. “It’s amazing,” Penn said of Silva’s lengthy run at the top of the middleweight heap. “To do that for that long and to be at the top for that period of time, it’s amazing.” It’s nothing, however, compared to what may come. If Silva keeps the belt by getting past Maia on Saturday, he could be in store for some magnificent adventures. If he ever gets in position for a heavyweight title fight with Lesnar, the UFC might need to bring in a couple of armored trucks to haul in the money he’d make. Silva, though, isn’t motivated by money as much as he is by pushing himself and testing the limits of his skills. It’s why he’d think about shedding the pounds to fight St. Pierre or to even consider taking on the gargantuan Lesnar. Silva is already a larger-than-life character, but the best may be yet to come. His idol is the comic-book character Spider-Man, he said, noting: “Ever since I’ve been a kid, I’ve wanted to be a superhero. That would be kind of cool.” If he beats St. Pierre and he beats Lesnar, it’s pretty much guaranteed he’ll never have to dream of becoming a superhero again. Do that and he’ll be one in real life. http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/news;_ylt=AhDMZ_3iYqQGgRIcSgMrmKc5nYcB?slug=ki-silva040710

While UFC president Dana White made it very clear he was unhappy with his middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, following a lackluster appearance at this past weekend's UFC 112 event in Abu Dhabi, the exec isn't hesitating to put "The Spider" back in action.
White announced today during an appearance on ESPN's "Jim Rome is Burning" that the organization was targeting a fight between Silva and top contender Chael Sonnen.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has since confirmed the UFC is targeting Aug. 7 in Salt Lake City, marking the UFC's first-ever trip to Utah.
Additional sources close to the promotion informed MMAjunkie.com that the UFC is eyeing EnergySolutions Arena, home of the NBA's Utah Jazz, as a potential host venue for the event.
Bill Colbert, Director of the Pete Suazo Utah Athletic Commission, told MMAjunkie.com that nothing is yet set in stone, but he acknowledged that he has been in discussion with the UFC.
"We've heard the date," Colbert said. "We've been speaking to the UFC for some time and encouraging them to come to our state. We're eagerly awaiting them to make a formal announcement. But I do understand that they're having discussions with that date in mind."
While the fight would likely serve as a headliner for a pay-per-view card, making the newly announced event UFC 117, White's words in Abu Dhabi leave some doubt as to whether Silva will be slotted into a main event role or if fans will be asked to pay for the card.
"Anderson Silva might be the first champion in history fighting on a prelim," White said following UFC 112. "How do you sell Anderson Silva after tonight? How do you do it? People don't want to see that [expletive]. I don't want to see it."
White didn't offer additional details regarding the event, though he did suggest a repeat performance by the fighter he has frequently touted as the world's greatest could lead to Silva's dismissal from the organization.
Silva has been expected to face slugger Vitor Belfort at UFC 112 until a shoulder injury forced "The Phenom" out of the event. MMAjunkie.com has learned that Belfort's injury will likely keep him shelved until approximately October, this ruling out his involvement in the new card.
Meanwhile, Sonnen earned his way into the title match by virtue of a current three-fight win streak – a run capped off by a unanimous decision win over Nate Marquardt.
Sonnen has openly expressed his distaste for Silva and has promised to make good on his words.
"[Silva] is getting beaten up in 2010 by Chael Sonnen," Sonnen told MMAjunkie.com this past weekend. "That's been the story from the jump.
"There's people out there that need (to be) beaten up – he's one of them. And I have a moral obligation to society to beat him up."
For the more on the newly announced UFC 117 event, stay tuned to the UFC Rumors section of MMAjunkie.com.
Party at Nate's house if this goes down.

- SILVA VS. SONNEN NEXT; SILVA'S CAREER ON THE LINE? Wednesday, April 14, 2010 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com ASilva-v-Sonnen.jpg
A message has been sent to UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Fight or go home.
UFC president Dana White announced on Tuesday, when appearing on ESPN's “Jim Rome is Burning,” that Silva would face top contender Chael Sonnen for his next fight, and if he pulls any of the antics that he did at UFC 112, he will be cut.
First up on the agenda was the official announcement that Sonnen, who has long lobbed strong words towards Silva, would be the next fighter to challenge Silva for his title belt.
"He's got a real tough fight coming up. His next fight's going to be against Chael Sonnen, and Chael Sonnen's one of these guys who's not going to lay back, not do what these other guys (did)," White told Rome.
He believes that Sonnen's style will not allow for any showboating or avoidance, as Silva showed in his last fight with Demian Maia.
"When he's been in this position when these types of fights have happened, it's been against real good jiu-jitsu guys, guys that want to get the fight to the ground. Well, Chael Sonnen's going to want to take this fight to the ground, but he's going to double leg him and bring him down," said White.
"Personally, I really believe that he was embarrassed by what happened that night, maybe he did have a mental breakdown, I don't know what happened in the ring. All I can say is I know his next opponent isn't going to be a guy who's going to lay back and let him do stuff like that."
Regardless of the opponent, a message has been sent, and White wants Silva to hear it loud and clear.
"If he ever acts like that again in the ring, I will cut him," said the UFC president. "I don't care if he's the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. I don't care if he is the middleweight champion. I will cut him, absolutely."
There was no date announced for the Silva vs. Sonnen match-up, but it's likely for a summertime affair between the two middleweight competitors.
Also on the card will be Forrest Griffin in a ladder match and Brock Lesnar in a Judy Bagwell on a pole match.

book it dana that is the fight everyone wants to see but Silva wins that fight 9 times out of 10. He is too smart and too defensive for a guy like GSP. It would be an intresting fight though.

The following is from TMZ.com:
TMZ has learned Tito Ortiz was just arrested for felony domestic violence at the home he shares with Jenna Jameson.
We’re told when cops arrived at the couple’s home in Huntington Beach, CA — Jenna Jameson had “visible injuries.”
We’re told someone called 911 today at 9:53 AM and reported a “disturbance.”
Tito is currently in custody and on his way to a Huntington Beach jail in Orange County, CA.
Tito and Jenna are not married — but they have twin boys together.

The following is from TMZ.com: UFC honcho Dana White tells TMZ Tito Ortiz could be booted from the organization if the domestic violence charges against him prove legit. White says, “We’re gonna be fair, but we could cut him.” White wants to wait until the police reports are in, but the UFC can take action even before the legal process runs its course. “Other than going on a killing spree, being accused of domestic violence is the worst thing you can have going for you,” White says.
