Chrysler still interested in GM merger -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chrysler still interested in GM merger Chrysler and General Motors called off their merger talks in November of last year, but a new report indicates Chrysler could once again be entertaining a GM tie-up. Both Chrysler and GM are in difficult financial situations, relying on the U.S. government to provide enough funding to keep their operations up and running. Per a Bloomberg report, Chrysler has identified a GM merger as its “best option” for survival. Although GM is still opposed to an alliance with its cross-town rival, it remains possible that the Obama administration could force the two into a “shotgun marriage”. “We knew we would get asked questions about our earlier discussions related to proposed alliances, so we decided to be very upfront and put it all in the presentation,” Chrysler spokesman Stuart Schorr told Bloomberg. Although it would seem to reason that adding two negatives would result in an even bigger deficit, there is actually a fairly positive upside to a Chrysler-GM merger. According to Chrysler, a merger with GM would likely bear more fruit than a Chrysler-Fiat alliance. Early estimates suggest a Chrysler-Fiat alliance would improve annual earnings by $7.4 billion, where as a Chrysler-GM alliance would result in an improvement of about $8.3 billion. Annual cash flow would also improve by about $1 billion in a Chrysler-GM scenario. More here: http://www.leftlanenews.com/report-c...gm-merger.html I don't see how this would help either of them. Maybe they should join forces "after" the bankruptcy. ;-) |

That is from GMinsidenews. "Shotgun marriage" I just see a picture of a redneck bride and groom with the groom's head replaced by a GM logo and the wife's with a Chrysler logo. The wife is crying into her hands and the groom is throwing back beers and is full of depression, and Congress is standing there holding a shotgun on them. |

Its probably better to merge. Pool resources, cut a lot of fat. That and when they shut down Pontiac I can buy a Dodge and not feel so dirty about it |

That is rediculous and I want to hear no more of it. No good could possibly come from that merger. It would be just like Daimler all over again. |

They haven't died or merged any of the other 1000 times the media has said it was a done deal why would I think they would now? Chrysler has been dead by May for each of the last 3 years and low and behold they are still here and developing new product. Bloomberg just needs something to "report" on. I'd say Chrysler added that into their survival report because Congress asked them last time about a merger with GM. They also have sections about a merger with Fiat and no merger with anyone and they have profit at the end of speculation for all of them. Personally I am getting tired of hearing about merging with Nissan, GM, Fiat, Ford, Toyota, etc., etc. Maybe some of these "reporters" should try coming up with a solution instead of trying to kill a company. |

That's exactly what Daimler said and then they ruined Chrysler's reputation and quality to the point they are in now. GM can't handle what they have now. Adding more would insure their death and whatever they take on. |

Doubt there would be much additional sales, and they haven't exactly been pinnacles of managing resources to begin with. It may hold them out a while longer, but unless something major happened it would just prolong the inevitable. |

“We knew we would get asked questions about our earlier discussions related to proposed alliances, so we decided to be very upfront and put it all in the presentation,” spokesman Stuart Schorr said in an e-mail late yesterday. No GM Talks That doesn’t mean Chrysler is renewing negotiations with Detroit-based GM, he said. Chrysler has agreed in principle to trade 35 percent of its equity to Turin, Italy-based Fiat for small-car technology and access to global markets. “We are in exclusive talks with Fiat,” Schorr said in an interview. GM Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner reaffirmed Jan. 13 at the Detroit auto show that he wasn’t pursuing a merger with Auburn Hills, Michigan-based Chrysler, and that position hasn’t changed since then, GM spokesman Steve Harris said last night. |

Yeah no good would come out of the merger especially for GM. I mean they both have a truck and small and midsize cars. However, Dodge's crossovers and small SUVs are not looked upon very well as is the rest of their quality (right or wrong that is the perception) and GM is close to the same perception. However, GM has done a little better since they have been working on improving quality longer than Dodge in the past few years because everyone jumped on GM first. Plus for both of them merger means shutting down a few less plants and dealerships overall but that is no different than staying separate and shutting down your own dealerships the percentage would have to be the same. No advantage. |
