DALLAS (Reuters Life!) – For many Americans, the West is the best.

That is among the findings of a new survey by the Pew Research Center, which found that Denver was the top city when Americans were asked about where they would like to live.

Detroit, Cleveland and Cincinnati were at the bottom of the list of 30 large metropolitan areas which Americans were asked to rank as places to reside, underscoring the economic woes of the "rust belt" and manufacturing industries including the car-making sector.

Denver was favored by 43 percent of the respondents, followed by San Diego at 40 percent and Seattle at 38 percent.

"Geography matters ... Seven of the public's 10 most popular big cities -- Denver, San Diego, Seattle, San Francisco, Phoenix, Portland and Sacramento -- are in the West, and the other three -- Orlando, Tampa and San Antonio -- are in the South," Pew said.

But it noted that the bottom of the urban barrel -- Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Kansas City and Minneapolis - was comprised of cities that are all in the Midwest.

Politics and class also played a big role in Americans' geographical preferences.

The survey found that Republicans were fond of Phoenix, while Democrats were partial to San Francisco, which is well known for its relaxed and liberal atmosphere especially on issues such as gay rights and same sex marriage.

It found that the affluent were twice as likely as their poorer peers to want to live in Boston while young adults were drawn to the bright lights of Los Angeles.

It further found that 46 percent of the Americans surveyed indicated that they would like to live elsewhere, a view that was more pronounced among city than rural residents.

Other highlights included:

- Big Macs trumped tall coffees with extra espresso shots: 43 percent preferred to live in a place with more McDonald's than one with more Starbucks, which was favored by 35 percent of the respondents.

- About seven-in-ten whites rate their current community as "excellent" or "very good"; only about half of Hispanics and four-in-ten blacks say the same.

- Rural and suburban residents rate their communities better than do residents of cities and small towns.

The results were based on a survey of 2,260 adults, conducted October 3 to 19, 2008.

That's the people who conducted it.

Americans are all over the map in their views about their ideal community type: 30% say they would most like to live in a small town, 25% in a suburb, 23% in a city and 21% in a rural area.

By a ratio of more than three-to-one, Americans prefer living where the pace of life is slow, not fast. A similarly lopsided majority prefer a place where neighbors know each other well to one where neighbors don't generally know each other's business.

By about two-to-one, they prefer to live in a hot-weather place over a cold-weather place.
On the food-and-drink front, a slight plurality would rather live in a place with more McDonald's (43%) than one with more Starbucks (35%).

About seven-in-ten whites rate their current community as "excellent" or "very good"; only about half of Hispanics and four-in-ten blacks say the same. Rural and suburban residents rate their communities better than do residents of cities and small towns.

People who live in a city -- as well as people who want to live in a city -- are more open than others to the idea of living with neighbors who are of different races. They are also more open to living among immigrants.

When it comes to community involvement, there is no difference among those who live in cities, suburbs, small towns or rural areas. About half of the residents in each place say they are involved, and half say they aren't.

We all know I'd love Denver. It really is an awesome place, been a long time since we went through there though. I was impressed by Nashville when we went through there last summer though.

Louisville was pretty empty I thought, especially for something of it's size.

Maybe it was just the tight quarters of the place. Dunno, didnt like it. To me Nashville seemed kinda empty too. Traffic wise, i expected bumper to bumper insanity

I'm not surprised Midwest cities are so low. It sucks out here. Work is bad, weather is terrible, I mean there's nothing that great. I could see why the East is more popular though, I mean Boston seems like it would be a great place to live, although I don't really know much about it. The West is where I wanna move when I get older though. Oh, and i'm surprised Milwaukee isn't on this list in place of Riverside. I'd be interested to see how that ranks, it seems like a nice town for being in the Midwest
BTW heres my top 5
5. Miami
4. Seattle
3. Denver
2. Pheonix
1. Portland
