POSSIBLE RUMOR! Chinese Official: SAIC, Dongfeng to buy assests of GM, Chrysler -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hardly the most solid source for news, but this one is floating around -- might as well recognize it. SAIC, Dongfeng said to buy GM, Chrysler assets By George Gao November 18th, 2008 Gasgoo.com In the coming two years China is likely to see a few of its large Chinese automakers and other manufacturing enterprises set a precedent for achieving globalization by acquiring global companies, just like SAIC or Dongfeng's possible acquisition of troubled GM or Chrysler. Chinese carmakers SAIC and Dongfeng are said to have plans to acquire the two U.S. auto companies, reported the 21st Century Business Herald today. On November 15, a senior official of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology -- the state regulator of China's auto industry -- told reporters that the auto manufacturing giants in China, such as Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) and Dongfeng Motor Corporation, have the capability and intention to buy some assets of the two crisis-plagued American automakers. An industry analyst noted that the global financial crisis has forced Chinese manufacturers to retool and upgrade themselves in order to meet and survive the challenge. Many enterprises dependent on low-value-added manufacturing will be driven out of the new wave of competition by technically innovative and financially sound rivals. It would be much easier now for strong Chinese automakers to go global by acquiring some assets of their U.S. counterparts in times of crisis. In the global acquiring In the global acquiring process, Chinese automakers can start with buying out the OEM projects and Chinese ventures of some global carmakers such as GM and Chrysler, said an expert from Deloitte & Touche accounting firm. |

A good reply by someone else: I mentioned this in another post. The US government will probably let this happen too. Idiots. I honestly think this is part of the Chinese plan. Get us tied to their economy through imports. Keep their currency tied to ours. Build up their economy while taking ownership stakes in ours through debt. Wait for the US economy to falter, and then start buying, buying, buying. A bloodless takeover of America by the Chinese. And your average Joe here won't care, as long as what he buys is cheap. Of course, he might care 15-20 years from now, but unfortunately Americans live in the here and now. They have very short time horizons (future and past). |

The media is so anxious to have someone buy Chrysler it's rediculous. First it's GM then it's Nissan, now it's random Chinese company C. They need to find something to talk about that may help the economic situation instead of making it worse with this fear mongering. Everytime they run these reports it just ruins car sales, because who wants to buy from a company in bankruptcy? And running these reports kills sales more and puts them closer to bankruptcy. Of course they don't care it's driving a couple extra viewers to their channel or paper. Unfortunately they don't realize with no money no one can watch them, or buy their papers. |

Furthermore this is what Chrysler has in the pipeline right now. B-Platform Product design completed and locked in, tooling has begun. Challenger Convertible No current plans for a Challenger convertible, but not ruled out. Customer demand will be monitored. CNG option F-150 is currently offered with a liquid propane option package done by Roush Engineering. Chrysler is studying this along with other alternative propulsion systems for future products. Durango Currently studying the financial, marketing and sales impact of keeping versus changing the Durango name. Fuel economy Chrysler will be introducing approximately 40 vehicle powertrain offerings with improved fuel economy. Jeep Liberty 4.0L: The 4. 0L V-6 will not package in the current Liberty without significant vehicle modifications. Jeep Pickup A Jeep pickup is not being considered at this time. Minivans Mid-cycle refresh plans in progress. Phoenix 3.6L. Active head restraints and more. Nissan Truck The same general guidelines will be followed with Nissan for the full-size Titan as was done with Mitsubishi for the Raider. These guidelines call for significant exterior/interior differentiation while protecting some of the key unique selling propositions exclusively for the Dodge branded product. Nitro Future brand offerings for this segment are currently not finalized. Patriot/Compass diesel While diesel engines have been studied as part of Chrysler's alternative propulsion strategy, emissions requirements in the U.S. makes this technology cost prohibitive. Europeans are willing to pay $3,300 more for a diesel due to favorable tax treatment by European governments. Phoenix engines Alive and well. 100% on target. PT Cruiser A small car replacement for the Chrysler brand is currently under active study. Ram HD The new Ram HD will be available as a crew cab with an 8’ bed. Production of the new 2010 HD Ram will begin in Q3 next year, arriving to showrooms by the fall. Ram 4500/ 5500 Dodge is currently working on a plan that would make the 4500 and 5500 models available to all Dodge dealers, details will be announced within a couple of weeks. Sebring / Avenger Chryslers Project D program is studying the optimal product to replace the Sebring/Avenger. This segment remains one of the highest priorities in Chrysler's product portfolio. Sprinter Based on the current agreement with Daimler, Chrysler will continue to be the North American distributor for Sprinter through 2011MY. SRT The SRT division will continue to be supported. Viper A strategic assessment of the Viper brand is in process. The intent is to identify the best approach to optimizing Viper's value in the marketplace. This process will take several months befor e findings and a recommendation are concluded. Wrangler There are no current plans to add a 4-cylinder engine to the Wrangler line-up. The Wrangler WILL be receiving the new Phoenix engine. |

Add to that they have started developing 8 speed transmissions to go into their vehicles. It doesn't appear they are on the verge of destruction and poverty like we see on tv everyday. Are they struggling like every other company not named Walmart? Yes, but they haven't given up and I'm sure the same can be said for Ford, judging by their debut of the Mustang last night, and GM. I don't know what all they have in development, but I am sure they have not said "well we had a good run, close the doors." They all need restructuring and money, but they are not dead yet. |

A part of me died today with this thread.... It may be best for the Big 3 to file for bankruptcy. It wont be the end of em, just gonna have to trim alot of fat and restructure in bankruptcy courts. Im sure several brands may get sold, merged or whatever but its the only way they are gonna change their ways and build cars people will buy. |

Actually it wouldn't be best to see the Big 3 U.S automakers filing for bankruptcy considering the ripple effect such an event would have on our economy. States will lose valuable tax revenue, and businesses will be impacted equally if not more severely. Allowing these companies to file and go into bankruptcy would make this banking collapse look like childs play. A bailout by far is the best plan, but it can't be an open checkbook. There will have to be stipends, to ensure these companies won't err again. |

Well its pretty obvious the bank bailout isnt working and I dont see this workin much better. Im the last person who wants to see these 3 go down but they need to change everything. Starting with Rick Wagner. But what kind of message are they tryin to send? They showed up in corporate jets. I mean that proves they arent the smartest kids on the bankruptcy block. Yea we need a shit pot of money so we dont have to fly coach next time...give me a break, fire all 3 of the CEOs and rebuild |

Not only were the news stations discussing the private jets they also said that none of them really had a detailed plan on what they would do if they received the $25 Billion. |
