Kenny Wallace to the #88? Kenny Wallace may return to the NASCAR Cup series next year if a meeting with Robert Yates goes well Sunday in California. "He called me up and said that his brother-in-law told him that the driver he needed to hire was right under his nose - me," Wallace said with his signature laugh. "I told him that the manufacturer wanted me to drive his car last but M&Ms wanted" Ricky Rudd. Wallace said Yates asked him to test the # 88 Ford at Talladega in the near future. "I keep reading that they are considering J.J. Yeley, so we will see what happens," Wallace said. "At least he called me, I didn't call him."(St. Louis Post Dispatch)(9-1-2007) |

I honestly don't see Kenny Wallace in the #88 as even a remote possibility. It's not really a talent issue as Kenny has proven he can run somewhat decently on the Cup level. It's more the fact that if Robert had wanted to go after Kenny Wallace he'd of done so after 94' when he filled in for Ernie Irvan. That leaves a nagging question. Who can fit the bill for Robert Yates? I would think Robert is looking for a driver he can sign to deal of more than two year, and in that regard Kenny Wallace doesn't fit the bill. That leaves J.J. Yeley as one of the few options left, and he has plenty of seat time behind him in Nextel Cup. At his age Yeley has many competitive years ahead of him in NASCAR, and there's no telling where he'll be in points a year, two or even 10 years from now. I'd love to see Kenny run competitively and consistently on the Cup level, but it's safe to say at this point he's only a last resort should Yates not be able to sign Yeley. Kenny Wallace tidbit: in the 12 races he ran in 1994, 10 were with Robert Yates behind the wheel of the famed #28 Texaco machine. His average finish for that year was 15.8. |

Kvapil to the #88? Restucturing at Yates: Robert Yates Racing is expected to announce a management structure change Friday night that, according to multiple sources close to the situation, will include team owner Robert Yates' retirement. Those same sources say that Travis Kvapil, current driver of Roush Fenway Racing's #6 Ford in the Craftsman Truck Series, will replace Ricky Rudd in the #88 Ford for the 2008 Sprint Cup season. Sources said Doug Yates, Robert's son and the president of the team, will assume the ownership role and preside over the company. Sources also said that Roush Fenway Racing will provide full support to Yates, including licensing, marketing and engineering. It was unknown how this might affect the recently-announced partnership between open wheel team Newman/Haas/Lannigan Racing and Yates. Robert Yates has been a Cup Series owner since 1989. During that time he has established himself as the premier engine builder at NASCAR's highest level and has collected 57 victories.(ESPN.com)(9-7-2007) |
