heard from somebody who heard from sombody who listens to tonys radio show that tony said no way would he ever drive for toyota and would retire if he had to... no clue how legit the of a source the person who listened to the show is.. before i heard any of that i read about tony possibly being a lock for the 4th rcr car too...

RCR would be so stackeeddd if Tony came on board

If Tony joined RCR, they'd probably be the only team that could compete with Hendrick, talent-wise. Although I too have heard that rumor ( I guess your source was right about Tony mentioning it on his program ), I don't think Tony is headed to RCR. I just read something this evening where RC said he's seriously looking at Yeley, and I would be pretty happy with that. Yeah, he hasn't accomplished much in his career, but he's made improvements and I think RC would do more to give him a good team than JD was doing. Yeley apparently asked for changes and he never got any, so obviously there was something going on there. Really, that car was competative when he stepped into it, and it's still about the same now. I think Yeley would be a great fit for RCR.

As for the topic, I still think it's stupid for gibbs to jump to Toyota. Unless Gibbs feels "behind" in the sport and needs more money, there's not any real advantage in switching. They are one of the top Chevy teams, so it's not like Chevy isn't backing them, and they are having plenty of success right now ( 3 out of the last 7 championships ), so I don't see why they need to move.

Unless Gibbs has some kind of secret up his sleeve, if they switch to Toyota, the team would be committing suicide.

I just don't see Tony, Denny, and Kyle being contenders, let alone turning the manufacturer's stake in NASCAR around overnight. Bad move if this is indeed true.

They're better off switching to Dodge...

I think Joe Gibbs like having his race teams hated. Bobby left a few years back and now they're bringing in Kyle Busch. Tony's just...Tony, and Hamlin has gotten increasingly arrogant this season (Sorry, Denny, you haven't had the best car every race). And now they're going to the most hated manufacturer. lol

UPDATE 2 - OFFICIAL: Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) has signed 22-year-old Kyle Busch to drive for the #18 team in Nextel Cup beginning in 2008. “We’re extremely pleased to have Kyle Busch as a part of the family here at Joe Gibbs Racing,” said J.D. Gibbs, president of JGR. “Kyle is extremely talented, as his track record has proven, and he had a lot of teams to choose from in determining who would give him the best chance to win. Obviously, we’re glad he chose JGR, and he’ll have all the tools and resources he needs to win races and contend for championships.” Busch comes to JGR a proven winner in each of NASCAR’s national touring series, with four Craftsman Truck Series victories, eight Busch Series wins and four Nextel Cup triumphs. “After talking with a lot of different teams and visiting their shops, Joe Gibbs Racing is where I want to be,” said Busch, whose contract with JGR runs through the 2010 season. “The Nextel Cup Series is filled with good teams and good people, but the moment I saw the shop and began talking with Joe and J.D. Gibbs, there was a level of comfort that made me feel like this is where I belong. I want to win races and championships, and Joe Gibbs Racing’s three-car/one-team philosophy gives me the best opportunity to do that.” Busch will take over for J.J. Yeley, current driver of the #18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet, following the conclusion of the 2007 season. He’ll begin pre-season testing as a teammate to two-time Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart and 2006 Nextel Cup rookie of the year Denny Hamlin. The 2008 season will mark Busch’s fourth full season in Nextel Cup. He currently competes for Hendrick Motorsports, where he ran a six-race schedule in 2004 before joining the series full-time in 2005. "While excited about my new opportunity with Joe Gibbs Racing, I remain committed to finishing this year strong and running for the championship,” Busch said.(JGR PR)
UPDATE 3 - Toyota? During the Q&A portion of the Joe Gibbs Racing news conference announcing Kyle Busch's signing with the organization, Busch and J.D. Gibbs talked about the possibility of the team switching from Chevrolet to Toyota next year.
Kyle Busch: "I took it into consideration, but as I looked at it, you know, I thought about it. And I'm like, 'Well, you know, Joe Gibbs Racing, they've done pretty well at what they've done so far.' And I feel like they'll make the right decision... Do I feel like Toyota struggled a little bit this year? Sure, they have. But do I feel like Joe Gibbs and everybody here can try to turn that around? Certainly. And if they're looking in that direction, you know, more power to them, but I'm going to let the man over here answer all of those tough questions."
J.D. Gibbs: "Yeah, really for us, we haven't had much change in really the past several weeks. We had some great conversations with GM here. Obviously, we've had a great partnership with them over the past 16 years, and we've been great partners as well. I think going forward, we're just going to sit down really... I want... We're going through a process to have all of our technical guys figure out where we need to be. I think GM just got a verbal agreement from Hendrick, the first team to kind of re-sign for next year. So we're kind of in the same phase as I think lot of those teams are. I think in the next several weeks, we're going to really have to figure out where our future is and our direction."(FoxSports)(8-14-2007

I miss the good old days when Roush and a legion of Detroit's Big 3 fans were up in arms over Toyota. Now we don't get so much as a peep about it. :sigh:

UPDATE 4: the press conference started just after 11:00am/et with JGR's J.D. Gibbs and Jimmy Makar; drivers Tont Stewart and Denny Hamlin; crew chiefs Steve Addington, Mike Ford and Greg Zipadelli; JGR's engine builder Mark Conquist; and Toyota officials Jim Aust and Lee White. Gibbs announced the team is switching from Chevy/GM to Toyota in 2008. Stewart says he is excited about the move and working on extending his contract. His USAC and WoO teams will stay Chevy and nothing will change there. Hamlin says he is working on his contract and is excited about the move.(9-5-2007)
PR: Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) will campaign Toyota Camrys in the Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Grand National Series [and also will switch to Toyota in the Busch Series] beginning in 2008. "We look forward to partnering with Toyota in NASCAR in 2008. Toyota will be hands-on with us as we become an integral part of their long-term development in NASCAR," said J.D. Gibbs, president of JGR. We have 420-plus families that are our number one priority, and taking care of them for the future is very important to us. Our people have made us as successful as we are today, and it's those same people who will ensure our success in the future. When our teams win, those families win. We're thrilled for everyone at JGR who will benefit from this."
"This decision was made by all of the key leadership at JGR," said Jimmy Makar, senior vice president of racing operations for JGR. "It was a decision made by the people in our competition department, who live by the one question whenever a decision is made regarding Joe Gibbs Racing: 'Will this make us more competitive on the race track?' The consensus answer was yes."(see full PR at the Joe Gibbs Racing site)(9-5-2007)
