Well Wally World might have thrown the biggest and last punch in the next gen format war. They've supposedly contracted a Chinese manufacturer to make millions of HD DVD players. It'll be nice when this thing is smothered with a pillow since it's insane that the studios are fighting in a format war to begin with.

I didn't. Universal is really the only one 100% behind it and BluRay has FOX, Disney, and just about everyone else that I can't think of right now. They got a huge help with the PS3's disappointing arrival and with the fairly successful 360 add on.

Well this is only the beginning of the format war here, so don't get too excited yet. Good thing in this day and age is that we're dealing with discs instead of large bulky tapes, which means that users can enjoy machines that play both formats. LG electronics makes a player for those that want the best of both formats(their players plays HD-DVD and Blu-ray DVD). However it won't be smooth sailing for us as consumers as there are three formats that are/or will be available by years end.

HD-DVD and Blu-ray DVD are currently availabe, however Warner Bros. is working to enter the picture as well. Warner Bros. idea is to release a product known as Total HD, they will be producing dual format discs. The idea is to release multi layer discs containing both HD-DVD and Blu-ray DVD formats( and on the same side as well). Additionally it is possible to add a third layer, of which Warner Bros. has applied for patents.

I'm thinking Warner Bros. might end up playing the spoiler in this DVD format war as companies are probably hesitant right now in picking one format over the other. Additionally the use of multi-layered Hi-Def discs should ease the costumer transition to these formats without anyone coming up the loser as what happened with the old Betamax format. It's set to be released later this year and I personally cannot wait.

That's what I cam in here to post...I don't think there will be a clear cut winner this time around. And if it is I think it will surprisingly be warner bros.

Well that's the last thing we need. It's one thing to have this kind of stuff for video games. There's going to end up being exclusives which means you'll have to go without or buy a universal player for several hundred dollars more. It's really too bad that the most of the companies that are a part of the DVD Forum broke off to do their own thing (BluRay).

But I'm fairly confident one will end up beating the other by a fair margin in the near future. It's only been about 6 months so far.

I wish that were the case that one format would win over the other, however you've gotta remember we're dealing with compact discs(in this case DVDs). If we were dealing with products of varying sizes (IE: Betamax or Minidisc), then that would be a different case. We're dealing with CDs and DVD's now and each one is the same in size and that means you can make discs which can be played in both formats. Not only that but you can acquire players that play both formats, it's a very neat feature that technology has given us.

About the only way to force one format over the other would be to change the overall size of the disc and thus forcing everyone to acquire new hardware.

Yep. I think Toshiba is the big daddy making the 2-fer.

And to clarify, the reason why I said we have a winner is because WalMart is king. If they want a product to sell, it will.

It's possible that both formats will fail.

I mean, DVD is still crazy popular, but something that is also becoming huge is downloable media. I get all of my music by download, and now I'm getting more and more games and TV shows by download. Unless HD-DVD/Blu-ray become insanely popular and cheap, I never plan to a buy a physical movie format again downloable junk keeps going at the same pace.

Doubtful that either format will fail, even taking downloadable media into account. Only way that would happen would be if someone magically developed a small and compact portable hard drive with a storage capacity well over a terrabyte(usb jump drives come to mind). Given the sometimes unreliable nature of computer data and internet access in certain areas the need for a physical media format will always be of importance. But hey always nice to dream  .

Failing and bowing out of the battle are two different things. Look at how hard headed Sony's been with the UMD movies.
