So..what happened to Blaney? #22-Dave Blaney and the team ran into misfortune on lap 185 of the 200-lap Daytona 500, as Blaney drive down pit road to avoid an accident on the frontstretch. With a flat right-front tire, he was unable to avoid making contact with several cars as he exited pit road. After making a lap around the track, he headed back to pit road for four fresh tires and to give the Caterpillar team the opportunity to review any damage the contact may have made. Unfortunately, NASCAR officials were none too pleased with the speed the Caterpillar Toyota reached on pit lane while trying to avoid the accident, and after first assessing the team a five lap penalty, they then decided to send the #22 to the garage for the remainder of the race. Blaney was credited with a 34th-place finish.(BDR PR)(2-19-2007)

glad to see they penalized him it was a stupid move that was incredibly dangerous. You would think that while driving down pit road at 150 plus mph he woulda realized he had a tire going down or atleast slow down to a safe speed when coming back onto the track considering the caution was already out.

I wouldn't blame him. Accidents happen. If you fine him for doing that then you got to fine everyone who does stupid things on the track. Fines could be handed out by the billions by the end of the season at that rate.

thats right I remember now a couple guys were bouncing off each other and Blaney cut down to pit road. Alright I was wrong either way it was still stupid of him to cut back on track while going that fast, flat tire or not.

This one wasnt just stupid though man. He merged onto the track at 145+

This one was just downright moronic and coulda really hurt someone.

From the way I read it they are penalizing him for how fast he was going down pit road not the accident. If I remember correctly the rule is if you use pit road to avoid an accident you have to slow down to pit road speed as soon as possible and Blaney didn't slow down. again I could be wrong but I think that is the rule.

He was probably concerned more about hitting that angle on the track and then the wall all at once and not thinking about his tire. I imagine concrete comes to mind before rubber. Why not slow I guess he thought he could handle it.

He probably could've straightened it out if the tire wasn't flat.

I don't actually think the tire was flat. He just didn't slow down. He did get it turned a little bit there at the end but he was going way too fast. There's no banking to help you, so it looked like he just went straight when in fact the car isn't set up to turn on a flat surface like that. They're used to turning on the 36 degree banking. I may be wrong, but I don't think he had a flat. He just failed to slow down on pit road, like he was supposed to ( that's why he was probably not allowed back on the track ).

Yeah, it was under caution when he came flying down pit lane, so he absolutely deserved that penalty.

When Edwards did it was green. That was what made it so spectacular, him and Lajoie flying down pit lane and rejoining the pack. It wasn't until Edwards left rear went flat that the yellow came out.
