Stewart has no plans to run Indy 500 again: Tony Stewart's efforts to win the Indianapolis 500 appear to have ended. Asked about whether or not he'd ever run in the event again, the former open-wheel star who has won two NASCAR Cup championships said that he wouldn't completely rule it out, but he couldn't really envision it. "I've learned to never say never, but I look at my life as a book, and it's kind of like it's a chapter that's either on its last page or almost closed," Stewart said. "My [Joe Gibbs Racing] contract takes me to 39, and I don't see myself getting back into IndyCar at the age of 39."(SceneDaily.com)(2-10-2007) Sounds about like 2009 is it for him, at least in a full time capacity. |

I am alittle confused. So is he saying he is retiring from the Nextel Cup when his contract ends?

He mentions his life being like a book and him being in a chapter that's on it's last page or almost to the end, so I figure his days as a full-time competitor in all motorsport are numbered. I also figure it'll open the door for him to do all kinds of racing, stock cars, sports cars, sprints, whatever he wants when he wants. He'll show up from time to time at a Cup race, I'm betting, and considering there are no points on the line, woowee. |

I don't see it that way. I see that he's saying that he'd be too old to drive the Indy cars. I'd be shocked if he retires, this is not football or baseball or basketball where when you hit the 40 year mark that you're contemplating retiriment, even then you see great athletes still going at it like THE Rocket Roger Clemens, Craig Biggio, and probably the best athlete we'll ever see: Michael Jordan coming back and playing when he was older then 40. I know you Stewart fans know more about him, but is hard to see him retire. If anything, I'd love to see Stewart race a formula 1 car to complete his legacy because if Juan Pablo Montoya goes on to win tons of races and multiple championships then you have to think that he'll be the best driver in our time even w/o winning a championship in F1. The fact alone that he had wins and championships in all major series: Nascar, Formula 1, Cart and the Indy 500 then that'd be the best resume out of all the drivers that ever got in a car. |

I took it how kb took it but Aarons comment made me think he is calling it quits. Well I will keep hoping this isn't what we think and that he will be around for alot longer then 2009. |

Yeah, he won't retire from Nascar at 39. He just isn't going to switch back to Indy Cars or make any dramatic shift. He'll be with the 20 team for many years to come. |

That's what we all thought about Tiki Barber, but look at him. Stewart never has liked all the media coverage and constant daily grind like that so I wouldn't be surprised to see him quit as a full time driver. And I believe he would be the first of many to do it. I believe that the days of seeing guys racing for close to 20 years full time is coming to an end. The grind is hard on them and I bet it gets old real quick and if you can get in make your millions have some fun then race whenever or whatever you feel the need to. I bet it'll become like the rest of the sports where the days of old athletes is over. |

I have to believe that Stewart's contract is still pending....doesn't mean it can't be extended. I'm kinda sad though that we probably won't be seeing him race the Indy 500. |

Yeah and even then it'd probably be a partial schedule. |
