Crew chief Matt Borland and driver #44-Dale Jarrett discovered they had something in common after Tuesday's initial get-to-know-you meeting at Michael Waltrip Racing. Both left the four-hour session feeling they had something to prove after a 2006 season in which the struggles of their former teams led to their partnership. Borland didn't sound at all like somebody ready to give up on his job as crew chief for #12-Ryan Newman to join a new organization. He stopped short of saying he was the scapegoat for what was Newman's worst season since he ran his first full Nextel Cup schedule in 2002. "I didn't really decide I needed a change," said Borland, who was named Jarrett's crew chief Friday. "Let's just say it was a mutual ... umm ... it was the best thing for all parties concerned." Borland was replaced for the final two races by Mike Nelson, who has since been named Newman's crew chief for '07. At the time Penske officials said Borland asked for a leave of absence to spend more time with his family. Newman said he hoped Borland would stay on in another capacity such as director of team competition. "It wasn't necessarily an option," he said.(ESPN.com)(12-13-2006) UPDATE: #12-Ryan Newman may have struggled through the 2006 Nextel Cup campaign, but he doesn't fault his friend and now former crew chief Matt Borland, who's landed a new job with Michael Waltrip Racing and #44-Dale Jarrett. Newman is clearly unhappy his car owner Roger Penske apparently forced Borland to leave. "Itīs difficult for me. When youīve got a guy thatīs your crew chief and your best man and they donīt offer him a position that heīs fully capable of ...itīs not the way I thought things were run." "Itīs kind of a difficult situation to explain on the radio, but Iīll definitely miss Matt and I know that he still wants to be a part of the team in a round about way but he was kind of run off." As for what Newman has to say about his new crew chief Michael Nelson, who used to be the team engineer for the Alltel Dodge.."I think Mike will do a good job, but weīve got parts and pieces weīve got to build to make the race cars faster. Changing people isnīt the final answer on making the race car go faster."(PRN's Garage Pass Radio Show)(12-14-2006) |

You know what they say about Toyotas and fuel mileage, so he's a natural fit. |

Well he's gonna need every bit of that extra mileage to keep DJ on the lead lap. |

Well I think there's only 2 Toyota cars guaranteed a spot in the Daytona 500. One for the 22 based off owner's points and one for the 44 with DJ's champion's provisional. The 00, 55, 36, 83, and 84 are new teams or have crappy owner points from 2006. Wouldn't that be a disaster if all those cars missed. The Red Bull cars will if their wonderful qualifying efforts from this year are anything to go off of. |
