Today is the 50th birthday of arguably one of the greatest basketball players ever. Today is the birthday of Larry Joe Bird. Larry was born in West Baden, Indiana and went to high school in French Lick (Hence the Hick from French Lick nickname). He went on to college at the University of Indiana where he made Bobby Knight's team did not play so he transferred to a junior college and then Indiana State University where his rivalry with Michigan State's Ervin "Magic" Johnson started after Magic's team defeated them in the 1979 NCAA championship game. During Larry's 3 year stint at ISU the Sycamores went 81-13. Before he started there they had been 12-14 the previous 2 seasons. Larry was drafted 6th by the Boston Celtics in 1979 and became the embodiment of Celtic Pride. Bird helped turn a Celtics team that had struggled for the later part of the 70's with horrible play and poor attendance. Larry led that struggling team to "three NBA titles and 10 Atlantic Division crowns. In addition to his three championship rings, Bird piled up an awesome collection of personal achievements. He became only the third player (and the first non-center) to win three consecutive NBA Most Valuable Player Awards. He was a 12-time All-Star, a two-time NBA Finals MVP and a nine-time member of the All-NBA First Team. He led the league in free-throw percentage four times." (NBA.com) Larry and a key off-season trade that brought in Robert Parish and Kevin McHale helped the Celtics make a 31 game turnaround in Larry's rookie season and led them to the 1980-81 NBA championship. Not only was Larry integral to the Celtics he was instrumental in helping the US capture the gold medal at the 1992 Olympics with the "Dream Team." While Larry wasn't the center star on a team with perrenial rival Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan among other big NBA names he was a part of the greatest basketball team ever assembled. Honors: Elected to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (1998) NBA champion (1981, '84, '86) NBA Finals MVP (1984, '86) NBA MVP (1984, '85, '86) Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88) All-NBA Second Team (1990) All-Defensive Second Team (1982, '83, '84) NBA Rookie of the Year (1980) One of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History (1996) Olympic gold medalist (1992) ![]() So here's to Larry Legend on his milestone birthday! ![]()   |

How great is Larry Bird? A crimnal was about to be sentenced, I forget for what, but the penalty was 30 years, but the crimnal requested the sentence to be 33 years, because 33 was the number Larry Bird, his favorite player, wore. The judge agreed and now the stupid gets to rot in a cell for another 3 years. |
