The survival of the human race depends on its ability to find new homes elsewhere in the universe because there's an increasing risk that a disaster will destroy Earth, world-renowned physicist Stephen Hawking said Tuesday.

Humans could have a permanent base on the moon in 20 years and a colony on Mars in the next 40 years, the British scientist told a news conference.

"We won't find anywhere as nice as Earth unless we go to another star system," added Hawking, who came to Hong Kong to a rock star's welcome Monday. Tickets for his lecture Wednesday were sold out.

Hawking said that if humans can avoid killing themselves in the next 100 years, they should have space settlements that can continue without support from Earth.

"It is important for the human race to spread out into space for the survival of the species," Hawking said. "Life on Earth is at the ever- increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster, such as sudden global warming, nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus or other dangers we have not yet thought of."

The 64-year-old scientist _ author of the global best-seller "A Brief History of Time" _ uses a wheelchair and communicates with the help of a computer because he suffers from a neurological disorder called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.

One of the best-known theoretical physicists of his generation, Hawking has done groundbreaking research on black holes and the origins of the universe, proposing that space and time have no beginning and no end.

You know, there was a little show called Firefly where they did this (along with plenty of other shows)...

Yep. The only problem is I don't think I'll be around for another 505 years to see the Alliance fight the Independents lol.

I did see a thing on Sci Fi a minute ago "Countdown to Doomsday" and anyway, one guy was like "Well we could have a Noah's Ark of DNA so that humans underground could keep our race alive and keep animals and plants alive- or we could all just die out and then have robots make more humans using DNA". At first that sounded exciting, but then I remembered an old quote from Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park: "Uh-uh! We're not talking about some animal that was wiped out by deforestation! Dinosaurs HAD their chance on Earth and nature SELECTED them for extinction." More reason why we should go to space and not have to go against the teachings of Jurassic Park lol.

The moral of the story is that all of life's lessons are either found in Firefly/ Serenity, Jurassic Park, or Star Wars. And also Indiana Jones.

A Stargate, that's what we need people.

No, because then we'd be trapped in a crappy television show or it's spinoff show which has managed to have fans for 10+ years now.

But we'd have McGuyver to get us out of any problem we come up against.

No, because he left about a season or two ago and now he's only showing up every 4 or 5 episodes. One of the episodes Richard Dean Anderson will be on coming up is based off of Firefly (show gets cancelled and fan support got a movie for it). It's going to be the 200th episode of Stargate SG1 and will make it the longest running sci fi show in North America, ahead of the X Files. Now, if he was in this Stargate, I'd go with him- as long as he has a tube of toothpaste, a paperclip, a match, and used gum.

Of course he will. As far as the show goes...I've never seen it, but the idea behind it seems like it could be good. At least the movie did, never saw that either though, so I'm gonna follow you on this sinc eyou know all about this stuff.

I've never really watched the show or the movie either! lmao

Like the Blazing Saddles poster art coin says "Hi, I'm Mel. Trust Me". I'm not sure what that has to do with it, but I'm sure it does.

Well what I don't like is that they pulled the crap where they take Kurt Russell for the movie and have Richard Dean Anderson play the same character for the tv show. That stuff drives me crazy.

Yeah I agree with that. It throws you off cause most of the time they get the guy in the tv show that isn't nearly as good.
